The United Kingdom

Celebrations for the Spring Festival in the UK started in 1980, with the first evening party held in 2002. Every New Year, Chinese in the UK get together and have a lot of activities. They sing songs, dance to music, share photos with friends or enjoy films in a cinema.

The United States

The Spring Festival has become a key time for Chinese living or working in the US. They join in a large evening party to welcome the traditional New Year. It is a good chance for people to build a circle of friends and feel that they are not alone because they share the same culture.

Australia

The Chinese New Year will be welcomed with three weeks of celebrations across Australia. Many people come to Sydney’s Chinatown or Little Bourke in Melbourne. They enjoy fireworks, lion dances, dragon boat races and many other traditional activities. The celebrations are also a bridge towards better understanding between Chinese and non-Chinese.

Singapore

The family dinner on New Year’s Eve is an important tradition. People place traditional food on a table to remember their past. Then the whole family enjoy their dinner together. They usually hold it at home because having it in a restaurant takes away the meaning of the tradition.

We can see beverage bottles (饮料瓶) almost everywhere. Can you imagine they can be sent into the sky? A science teacher and his students, from a primary school in Zhejiang Province, made a rocket with beverage bottles and launched successfully.

The teacher is called Wang Yin. He said that the school’s learning theme of this year was about space and humans. And on May 15th, 2021, Tianwen-1 landed on Mars successfully. To celebrate it and let students experience the launching process, Wang decided to help his students make a water rocket.

The water rocket is pushed by air and water. It isn’t a new idea, but what Wang wanted to make was a two-stage (两段式) rocket. It wasn’t an easy job for the students. However, they showed great interest and did all the work with excitement. They continued with the project even after many failures.

On May 17th, 2021, Wang and his students made it. Their rocket rose to a height of over one hundred meters. Later that day, Wang posted a video about the launch online. In just half a day, over 13 million people watched it. They all spoke highly of what he did. Wang said, “My students are crazy about it. It’s really meaningful.” He hoped he could help develop students’ interest in science and invention instead of simply teaching them knowledge.

There are many aspects (方面) to language learning, such as how words are said, which words are chosen and what forms of words are used. All of these aspects together can make learning a foreign language difficult.     31    ? Here is some advice.

Don’t worry too much about pronouncing words the wrong way.

Traditional Chinese art forms offer a good chance to admire Chinese culture from thousands of years ago. Here, let’s take a look at three traditional Chinese art forms.

Chinese guzheng The guzheng has a history of more than 2, 500 years. The modern guzheng usually has 21 strings and it is 64 inches long. The musician uses his/her right hand to pluck (拉)—— the strings. The guzheng is still very popular and modern musicians are finding ways to include it in rock, jazz, and even hip-hop!
Shadow puppet shows Chinese shadow puppet shows have been popular since the Han Dynasty. In fact, the Chinese name means “leather (皮革) shadow play” because the puppets are made of leather. The puppeteer controls the puppets and tells stories along with the music from a band of Chinese musical instruments. Shadow puppets are believed by many people to be the oldest film form of storytelling.
Chinese calligraphy In English, “calligraphy” means beautiful writing. Chinese calligraphy is a traditional form of writing Chinese characters through the use of ink and a brush. There are many well-known calligraphers in ancient China, such as Liu Gongquan in Tang Dynasty and Zhao Mengfu in Yuan Dynasty. Now, calligraphy works are seen on the walls of offices, shops, hotels and houses. Many Chinese children are also sent to learn Chinese calligraphy.
