阅读理解-单选(约350词) | 较难(0.4)
文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了一家日本公司发明了一种名为Giraffenap的产品,可以让人站着休息,目的是提高工作表现。

Sleep like a Giraffe

What’s your favorite sleeping position? On your back? On your side? How about standing up? Unless you happen to be a giraffe, I’d never have thought anyone would choose the last one. But now thanks to a Japanese company, it could actually be a real competitor.

Giraffenap is invented to allow the user to take a rest while standing when he/she feels tired or sleepy with the purpose of improving performance at work. In an introduction to the nap (小睡) box, the company says that it will allow the user to be refreshed (恢复精神的).

But why does it have to be standing? The company explains that studies have shown that sleeping while standing allows people to reach a sleep state in which they breathe easily. When they wake up, they can feel the influence of a nap without having to sleep too much. And they can quickly return to work without feeling dizzy (头景目眩的). Also, making the box vertical (垂直的) rather than horizontal (水平的), means that it takes up half as much floor space. Now, I know what you’re thinking—wouldn’t a person just fall down if he tried to sleep while standing? Of course not.

Inside the box are four points to support the body—head, buttocks (臀), legs and feet. That means he can rest his arms. I hope you’ll try sleeping standing up—just like giraffes do.

Giraffenap has been made in two different styles—a futuristic (极其新潮的) one named “Spacia”, and a wood-covered one named “Forest”. They’re scheduled to be released towards the end of next year, so when that time comes, I guess you’ll just have to pick your favorite design, and slot yourself in ready for a good nap.

21. Giraffenap was designed with the purpose of ________.
A.taking naps when tired or sleepyB.improving work performance
C.feeling refreshed in just 20 minutesD.returning to work without feeling dizzy
22. Why does the company recommend (推荐) standing up to take a nap?
A.It takes up more floor space.B.It helps users fall asleep too much.
C.It’s difficult for users to breathe easily.D.It can help users feel refreshed in a short time.
23. What does the company say about the napping box?
A.It allows users to fall asleep easily.B.It saves floor space when not in use.
C.It provides four points of support for the head.D.It will be available for sale at the end of next year.
24. Which of the following is NOT mentioned in the passage?
A.The box’s appearance.B.The box’s materials.
C.The box’s use of spaceD.The box’s sale date.
25. The underlined sentence “Now, I know what you’re thinking—wouldn’t a person just fall down if he tried to sleep while standing?” suggests that ________.
A.people would fall down if they tried to sleep standing up
B.the author doubts if it is necessary to stand up to take a nap
C.people may care about the safety of taking a nap standing up
D.it is unnecessary to worry about falling down while standing up to sleep

文章大意:本文是一篇记叙文,节选自《柳林风声》的童话故事。主要讲述了鼹鼠在春天跑出地面,享受春天的阳光和大自然的美好的故事。

The Mole brushed, and he cleaned the floors and the walls. He stood on the chairs to wash the top of the cupboards, he got under the beds. He cleaned and he cleaned, until his back and arms ached with tiredness.

It was springtime, and the smell and the sound of spring were everywhere, even in the Mole’s dark little house under the ground.     31     So it was not surprising that the Mole suddenly put down his brushes and said, “Oh bother (恼怒)!” and then, and he ran out of his house and began to dig his way upwards to the sun.

32     ” Up we go!Up we go!” he said to himself, until at last his nose came out into the sunlight, and he found himself in the warm grass of a field.

“ This is fine!” said the Mole.” This is better than cleaning!” The sunshine was warm on his back and the air was filled with the songs of birds.     33     Here and there he went, through the fields and the woods, looking and smelling and listening. Everywhere animals and birds were busy, looking for food, making new homes for the spring. The Mole enjoyed it all.

34     He had never seen a river before in his life——this wonderful bright shining thing, which danced its way in and out of the shadows under the trees. It was never still for a minute, hurrying and laughing and talking to itself.

And at once, the Mole was in love with it.     35     At last he sat down on the grass and looked across the river to the bank opposite.

Have you ever found yourself in a situation where you’re talking to someone but     46     keep looking at their phone? This is called “phubbing” — a mix of the words “phone” and “snubbing” (不理睬).

When someone is “phubbing”, they’re using their phone     47     (look) through the online news, play games and so on, instead of focusing on the conversation or spending time with the people they’re with. The word was first used in 2012.     48     now most people have smartphones, phubbing is a common problem.

Most people would agree that it’s     49     (polite) to be focused on your phone when you’re spending time with another person. The expert William Hanson thinks so,     50    . “Phubbing is a no-no!” he says. “If you have planned to go out with friends, focus on them and not your friends on your phone.”

Studies     51     (find) that phubbing can break your relationships with others. Those who “phub” are     52     (think) of as less polite and caring.

So science has shown that phubbing is not good for us—but     53     do we do it? It might be because we are feeling bored, worried or stressed. Or it might be because we are addicted to (沉溺于) checking our phones or     54     (play) games.

Whatever the reason may be, phubbing is a bad habit and can make us miss out on real moments with the people around us.     55     the next time you’re spending time with a friend or family member, try and keep your phone out of sight!

文章大意:本文讲述了作者参加超级马拉松后的感受。

Running an ultramarathon

Jason’s Ultramarath on Blog

April 14th: I did it! I just completed my first ultramarathon. I’m feeling exhausted, I’m sore all over, and I have bad blisters on my feet. But I’m really proud of myself. I didn’t think I could do it. I’ve only been running long-distance for three years.

I’ve completed five normal marathons (which are 42 km) but this was quite different from them. This race was 140 km and it took place over two days. I was very tired after yesterday’s run, but I had to run for seven hours again today!

I think the most important thing for me is to get the speed right. If I go too fast, I don’t have enough energy for the end of the race. If I go too slowly, all the other runners leave me behind, and it feels like I’ll never catch up with them.

My family can’t understand why I like it. I didn’t like team sports in high school. But long-distance running is different. It’s a challenge. I like pushing myself to do better and to beat my own best time. I’m not trying to finish first. All I want is to do a better time with each run.

And of course, the other good thing is that I’ve raised quite a lot of money for charity (慈善) with this ultramarathon. A big “thank you” to all my friends and family who agreed to give money to the Red Cross. I’m going to do it again next year. Maybe I’ll be able to raise even more.

56. 选择:词义配对:

Two Words that Changed Many Lives

Often when we’re going through a hard time, we feel alone, and just having someone notice and understand is enough to make us feel loved and supported. Sherry was once upset and disappointed while working on a hard job. Then her boss gave her a card. The card with just two little words was what made her realize she wasn’t alone.

The two words?

You Matter.

Sherry said she almost cried when she read the message. “I’ve fought at times with my own self-worth, and when I received the card, it felt like a question I carried around with me had been answered—I matter.”

Sherry was so touched that she ordered 100 of her own cards to give away.

“I met a woman who looked to be in her 60s. When I asked her how she was doing, the woman said, ‘Not so good. My husband just lost his job. The truth is, I don’t know how I’m going to get through the holidays.’ My heart ached, I wanted to help but didn’t know how. Then I remembered something in my hag that might help her. ‘It sounds like you’re going through a really hard time. I’d like to give you something.’ And I handed her a ‘You Matter’ card. When she read it, she began to cry. ‘You have no idea how much this means to me.’ she said thankfully.”

“Without that card, I wouldn’t have gone up to that woman and said anything,” she says. Sherry thought the experience was so powerful that she decided to send sets of 30 “You Matter” cards free to anyone who signed up online as long as the person promised to give the cards away. She called the event the “You Matter Marathon (马拉松)” because the cards can pass on people’s kindness and care about each other.

The idea was more successful than she’d expected and the cards have changed many people’s lives. Julie, a participant (参与者), says, “Having the ‘You Mater’ cards ready to hand out has allowed me to really look at people. This is making me a much more connected human.”
