A Trip to Nanjing

Last weekend, I went to Nanjing to visit my cousin. He is a student at Nanjing University (南京大学). It was my first time to travel to Nanjing. My cousin showed me around the city. There are many places of interest.

We went to the Confucius Temple on Saturday morning. After lunch, we walked to Laomendong. Laomendong is in the east (东面) of the Zhonghua Gate in Nanjing. That’s how it got the name Mendong.

While we were walking around the area, my cousin and I found an interesting shop. It was selling “shaobing”. It is a kind of baked bun (烤的圆饼). Many visitors lined up in front of the shop to buy the freshly baked buns. We bought some and they were very delicious. Then, we went to Deyunshe to watch a crosstalk show (相声). The performers told many funny jokes. They made us laugh a lot.

I had a wonderful time. I think they are must-sees in Nanjing.

Ethiopia (埃塞俄比亚) planted more than 350 million trees in 12 hours on July 29, 2019. This breaks the world record for tree planting. In 2017, India made the world record when about 1.5 million people planted 66 million trees in 12 hours.

On the big day, some schools and offices stopped their teaching and work to let people join in a green activity. The Prime Minister (总理) himself planted the first tree.

The activity was to plant 200 million trees to make the natural environment (环境) better and better. It was regarded as a quite hard work at first. But after 12 hours’ hard work, people in Ethiopia planted over 350 million trees.

With the “record-breaking” day, Ethiopia didn’t want to stop, because the country’s goal for the whole season is to plant 4 billion (十亿) trees in the rainy season between May and October. The country is on its way to make this goal come true (实现).

It was reported that there are more and more people in Ethiopia. So people cut down trees to farm. That caused climate change and less forest. People tried to plant trees to change their lives.

Most of us get our water from our taps (水龙头). But some people prefer bottled water.

Bottled water first appeared in the United States in the 1760s. It was said that the water could be good for bodies. Since then, bottled water has become more and more popular all over the world.

Why has bottled water become so popular? Because of people’s worries about the purity of tap water. A study showed that 63% of Americans worried if their drinking water was clean enough.

However, research (研究) suggests such worries are unnecessary. For most families, bottled water is not better than tap water. In fact, almost half of all bottled water comes from the tap. And when it comes to taste, most of us can’t tell the difference.

However, making bottled water needs a lot of resources. Bottles are usually used only once. Besides, more water goes into the making of a bottle of water. One study found that on average (平均而言), 1.39 liters (升) of water is used to make one liter of bottled water.

Do you prefer bottled water to tap water? It’s time to change your mind! Bottled water is more expensive. However, it isn’t much better than the water you get from your kitchen tap.

When you cut your finger, you put a Band-Aid on it.     66     These are just some of the problems in our life.

Not all our problems are small or easy to solve.     67     Others can make us have new or difficult things.

When you have problems, you may decide to do nothing.     68     However, the best way is to solve them. Here are the steps:

First, you must know that there’s a problem. It is everywhere. Next, think about it. Ask questions like “Where does the problem come from? and How bad is it?” That will give you a clear picture and help you know about it better.     69     Finally, choose the best one and put it into action (行动).

    70     Keep an eye on things until your answer to the problem works and can solve it.
