New Year Celebrations
People around the world celebrate the New Year at different times of the year and in different ways. Some people celebrate with parties. Other people might have interesting and sometimes strange traditions.

South America Eating twelve grapes (葡萄) on New Year’s Eve is a tradition in South America. Each grape stands for one month of the coming year. It’s good luck to eat all twelve during the last twelve seconds of the year. In many places, people wear yellow clothes because yellow is the color of gold. |
Europe In Denmark, people smash (粉碎) old and broken dishes. They think this will bring them good luck in the New Year. In Greece, people make a special cake with a coin (硬币) in it. If you get the piece of cake with the coin, you will have luck in the coming year! |

One day, a woman bought a parrot(鹦鹉)from a pet store. However, the woman decided to send the parrot back to the store the next day. “This bird doesn’t talk.” she told the pet store owner. “Does he have a mirror?” the owner asked. “Parrots enjoy watching themselves in it.” So the woman bought one and left.
The next day, she came back, saying that the bird still didn’t say anything. “How about a ladder (梯子)? Parrots love ladders,” the owner said. The woman bought a ladder and left.
But the next day, she went back a third time. “Does your parrot have a swing? No? Well, once he starts swinging, he’ll talk a lot happily,” the owner said. The woman then bought a swing and left.
When she walked into the store the next day, she began to cry and said sadly, “The parrot died.” The pet store owner was surprised at what she said. “What? I’m sorry. Tell me, did he ever say anything?” he asked. “Yes, right before he died,” the woman answered in a low voice, he asked me weakly, “Don’t they sell any food at that pet store?”

Do you have good teeth? We brush our teeth to keep them clean and healthy. In fact, having good eating habits is also helpful for the health of our teeth!
Eating too many sweets is the worst thing you can do to your teeth. When you eat candies, for example, the bacteria (细菌) in your mouth will produce some acids. These acids can damage your teeth and the tooth problems would appear. You can try eating sugar-free things instead of sugary ones. Chewing (咀嚼) xylitol gum, for example, can help reduce the bacteria in your mouth.
More or less, eating leaves food debris on your teeth. If you chew more while eating, the friction between your mouth and tongue will help you to better clear out the food debris. People often chew more when they eat high-fiber (高纤维的) foods, such as cabbage. When they eat low-fiber foods, such as white bread, they chew fewer times. Therefore, it’s a good idea to eat more high-fiber foods.
You may think it’s okay to eat ice cubes (冰块) because they’re just water. ▲ These cracks (裂缝) can then weaken (弱化) your teeth. While it may feel good to break up ice cubes with your teeth, it’s better to let them melt in your drink.
All in all, in order to have a brighter smile, you should improve your eating habits as well as brush your teeth twice a day. Also remember to floss (用牙线洁牙) and make sure to visit your dentist often!
29. It’s a good idea to eat more high-fiber foods, such as________.A.white bread | B.beef | C.cabbage | D.cubes |
A.保护 | B.提升 | C.破坏 | D.摧毁 |
A.So the ice cubes can make your teeth stronger. |

A.Eat Well for Your Teeth | B.Do More Exercise for Teeth |

①Chinese traditional painting and dance are two important parts of the art world. But what about when they meet each other?
②Last year, a dance program named Poetic Dance: The Journey of a Legendary Landscape Painting (《只此青绿》) was staged on CCTV’s Spring Festival Gala and became a hit.
③According to CCTV, this dance program was inspired (激发) by the 900-year-old Chinese painting A Panorama of Rivers and Mountains (《千里江山图》) . Created by Song Dynasty painter Wang Ximeng at about 18, the painting is amazing in its big size, rich colors and the expressive details, reported CCTV. It shows a Chinese blue-green picture of land: “mountains and groupings of rise and fall between cloudless sky and rippling (波浪起伏) water”.
④The dancers were thought as mountains in the performance. They each had a different hairstyle, which was similar to a mountain rock. The clothes they wore were green and blue, which is also a poetic interpretation (演绎) of the mountains and rivers. When the dancer swung, audiences seemed to be looking at the moving mountains and rivers. “It brings me an enjoyable experience of beauty. It is not only a drama but also an ‘exhibition’ which shows excellent works of art to the public. Huge mountains and rivers are coming to life!” Internet user Mo Weisha wrote in a review. “More than a thousand years later, green mountains and rivers still excite people as they did long ago.” Some people even decided to watch the dance again when it was staged in the theaters later.

In a world full of pressure (压力) today, it’s always helpful to hear some encouraging (鼓舞人心的) words of advice. Some students at a primary school and their art teacher Jessica Martin created a new phone hotline (热线), which is to give people those pieces of advice.
The program started when Jessica asked the same question for students in all grades: “What would you say to encourage or help someone else?” Jessica recorded (录制) their answers and put the recordings into different parts. Later, she moved them to a phone hotline you could call at 707-998-8410.
If you feel sad or angry, you can call the number and then press (按) 1. You’ll get helpful advice, including “Cry on your pillow” and “Go get an ice-cream”.
