What is the future of AI (人工智能)? Will it be a good thing? We asked four students what they think.

Tina: I think AI will be more useful in our future lives. It’s now used in many fields, like phones and medicine. No one really knows what will happen if machines become smarter than humans. However, I’m sure AI will help us solve many problems.

Bill: I’m worried that people create something that can be better than themselves. In the near future, AI will develop at a high speed. Humans may be replaced (取代) because AI robots will do lots of human jobs.

Mary: I really think that AI will change the way we work, the way we live, and the way we think. Imagine if we could put a CPU into our brains! Soon we’ll be able to improve our mat hand memory. How exciting!

John: Think of what’s happening right now. Some robots are used to kill animals under human orders. So I think AI will be very dangerous for humans. We need to be careful about what we ask machines to do.

Our new foreign students are going to arrive very soon, and here are some ways to communicate with them politely.

How close do you stand when you talk to a friend? You can stand close to people in the Middle East but don’t stand too close to North Americans! Give them more personal space.

Do you know how to touch people correctly? Chinese girls often walk arm in arm with their friends. South Americans sometimes hold your arm when they talk to you, so you can’t move away! But in Britain many people don’t like other people to touch them at all.

Do you look at people when you talk? In some places, it isn’t polite to look at people when you talk, but in other countries it isn’t polite to look somewhere else. In Britain and the US, people usually look at each other when they talk.

And how do you say goodbye? That’s easy, wave (挥手) to say goodbye. But be careful! In Greece, it’s not at all polite! In fact, it’s very rude!

Have you ever had trouble sleeping in a new place?

Lots of people do. And now researchers (研究员) from Brown University in Rhode Island think they know why. They found that one-half of the brain “remains more awake” than the other half when people are trying to sleep in a new place.

The sleep findings were reported in Current Biology by Brown University. In their report, the researchers said many people report they have a harder time sleeping the first night at a hotel or other places outside their home. They call it “first-night influence”. “In Japan they say, ‘If you change your bed, you can’t sleep,’”said Yuka Sasaki, one of the report’s writers. “You don’t sleep very well in a new place. We all know about it.” The researchers measured (测量) brain waves for 35 volunteers for two nights in a lab. The two nights were a week apart (间隔). They found the left half of the brain was more active than the right half during the first night. This was during the first deep-sleep period, the researchers said.

Sasaki said a lot of questions remained. Researchers did not keep measuring brain waves all night long. So, they don’t know if the left half keeps “watch” all night, or whether it “works in shifts with the right half later in the night”. They also do not know why the brain activity, at least during the first period of deep sleep, is always on the left half.

Having a part-time job is an important part of growing up for American teenagers. It can teach them important skills that will be useful for the rest of their lives. And many of them find that making their own money gives them a sense of pride and freedom (自由).

American teenagers are allowed to do part-time jobs at the age of 14. During the school year, teenagers may go to work a few times a week after school, and work for longer at weekends.

In summer, top part-time jobs for teenagers include at camps, swimming pools and amusement parks (游乐园). These jobs are great for those who want to be active and have fun while making money.

Some of the most stressful (压力大的) jobs include teaching, nursing, and police work. These skills help to prepare teenagers for their later lives. When they grow up, the students with work experience are more likely (可能的) to succeed than those without work experience.

A favourite job for many teenagers is babysitting. As long as they stay in the house and make sure the kids are okay, babysitters can do their homework, watch TV, or talk on the phone with their friends. After the kids go to bed and before the parents come home, babysitters have lots of freedom.

It can be stressful to balance school, homework and a part-time job. However, many American teenagers value their work experience and the skills they get from the job.
