Dear Sir/Madam,
We are students in Year 9 at City High School. In our English class, we’re doing a project on the local community. We’re being asked to come up with ideas to improve our neighborhood.
It’s a lively neighborhood with some parks and green spaces. It has got shops, cafes and other places where you can buy food. However, this can cause a problem. There is a lot of litter in the streets. We’d like to hand out some leaflets to ask people to take their litter home instead of throwing it on the ground. At the same time, we’d like to do a litter collection and collect plastic bottles for recycling.
Another idea we’ve had is to paint the benches (长椅) in the children’s area in the park next to our school. The benches are old. We think it would be better if people had some nice, colorful benches to sit on.
Several of us catch the local train to school. We’ve noticed that the stations aren’t very attractive We’d like to grow plants to make people feel happier when they’re waiting at the station. If we did that, we would, take turns to look after the plants and water them.
Finally, we know that a new road system for the center of town is considered at the moment. Are cycle ways and footpaths included in the plans? We hope so, because we want to encourage students to walk to or ride to school instead of coming in a car.
We’re looking forward to hearing from you.

Yours faithfully,

Year 9 students

Now, think back about your early years as a child and ask yourself what your earliest memory is. What comes to mind? Is it a special event? Is it a memory of someone special to you? Or is it a fun game: If you’re like most children, you probably have only a few special memories that stick in your mind from between the ages of three and seven. Why is that?

According to psychologists (心理学家), most adults can’t remember much about their early lives, which they call childhood amnesia (幼儿期健忘), psychologists still do not fully understand why childhood amnesia happens. However, some studies of children’s brains over the last twenty years have given researchers new ideas about what might be going on.

Early researchers believed that children did not have fully-developed parts in their brains to allow them to keep information. Over time, however, it became clear that children could remember many things, where they live, etc.

Now experts believe children at an early age don’t have episodic memory The hippocampus (海马体), one part of the brain, the hippocampus can begin tying together several pieces of information into memories.

Although it would be cool to have memories from our earliest days, researchers believe things have worked out for the best. They believe that early episodic memory could be too distracting at an early age when we’re still trying to understand how the world works! After all, children at an early age have less attention compared with adults.

43. How did the writer help us get to know the childhood amnesia in Paragraph 1?
A.By listing some numbers.B.By raising some questions.
C.By making up a story.D.By comparing different ideas.

C.The hippocampus begins working on memories until sometime.
D.Children don’t have fully-developed parts in their brains.
45. What does the underlined word mean?

How late is too late to return a book to the library? For a library in California, USA, the answer is never. After a historical book was checked out 96 years ago.

According to Chris Kreiden, director of the library, the name of the book is A History of the United States and it was written by Benson Lossing.

Have you noticed that it is easy to find what you want when you go to the library? For that, you can thank Melvil Dewey. Melvil was born in Adams Center, in 1851. His parents, owned a general store. He was always interested in books and words. That interest continued when he went to Amherst College. In 1872, he began working at the college library.

Melvil thought that it was important to be educated and libraries could play a big part in teaching people, so he wanted them to be easy to use. At the time, it was hard for people to use libraries. Books were not organized. Instead, books on the same subject might be in several parts of a library. It was hard to find books on one subject because there was no good way to know which books in a library were about which topics. So he invented a new system of organizing books. That system is called the Dewey Decimal System (DDS). It is so successful that many libraries still use it today. It is an easy way to keep track of and find books people want quickly.

Melvil did more than invented the DDS. He wanted libraries and librarians to work together, so he helped found the American Library Association in 1876. He also founded the Library Journal. Melvil did a lot for librarians. At the time, there was no place for a person to learn to be a librarian. So librarians had to try their best to learn on the job. Melvil opened the world’s first school for librarians in 1887. He also set up the first traveling library. Today’s bookmobiles are based on that library. Melvil Dewey died in 1931, but his work still helps people use libraries today.
