I am a doctor at a hospital. I first met 8-year-old Katy on a rainy afternoon. When I went to Katy’s room, she was not in her bed. She was in a chair next to Tommy, a little boy. Though Katy did not feel well because of her heart problem, she was playing with Tommy. It took a lot of effort for her just to sit in the chair. But she played with Tommy because it made him happy.

Katy was always smiling although she didn’t feel well. She refused to just stay in bed. One day I found her painting a picture. Later, she gave it to one of the older patients. Another day she went outside to get flowers for another little girl. Katy made everyone smile.

A week later, Katy had an operation (手术) . It was successful! When I heard the good news, I was so excited. Katy slowly recovered and left the hospital a month later.

I have met many patients. However, I have never met another girl like Katy. Even after she got well, she still came to the hospital often. She played different games with the young patients. She read many books to the older patients. She is a hero to me and everyone else at the hospital.

Jack Denham was skiing with his family when he fell over and lost one of his skis (滑雪板). His family didn’t know that he had a problem. They kept on skiing. When they got to the bottom (底部) of the mountain, there was no sign of Jack.

Jack couldn’t find the ski anywhere. In the end, he decided to take off his other ski and walk down the mountain. But he couldn’t find out the right way to go.

It was getting dark and it was a long way from any safe place. He know that he might die in the cold, but he tried to keep calm (冷静的). Jack remembered that he had watched lots of programs about how to live in difficult situations and followed their advice. He made a hole in the snow and hid himself in it so that the wind couldn’t blow him. Outside the hole, it was -15℃, but inside it, Jack was safe from the cold that night.

The next early morning, Jack got up and walked down the mountain. As the TV program said, he found some ski tracks (痕迹) through the snow and followed them. He walked and walked and finally he saw light. Luckily, nine hours after Jack lost ski, he found a team of workers who came to save him. He was safe!

His mother was very happy when she heard the news. Jack didn’t even have to go to hospital. He got through the terrible experience without being hurt.

Everyone knows that the earth is in danger. Some people think there is nothing we can do about this but that’s just not true. If we all do a few small things every day, we can make a real difference.     36
