It was getting dark as the sun was dropping down the mountain far away. Peter came back home _______. “What’s wrong, Peter? How’s your trip?”, _______ a caring smile, his mother asked.

Insect-eating plants don’t have sharp teeth, but they do “eat” living creatures (生物). That ability makes these plants some of the most interesting plants on earth.

Insect-eating plants have bright colors, smells, and flowers to make insects come closer. Insects are then trapped by the plants and become their food. Most kinds of insect-eating plants are smaller plants. They can reach up to 12 inches in height. Some taller ones can grow to the height of 3 feet.

These insect-eating plants live all over the world. About 40 kinds live in North America. Each type has its own special way to trap insects. And each type has its own special look. For example, the Venus flytrap (捕蝇草) can feel when a moving insect is in between its leaves and will very quickly close to catch the insect. If the insect is too small and gets out of it, the trap will open again in more than 12 hours. If the insect moves around and can’t get out, the trap will get more closed.

Insect-eating plants usually live in wetlands. They have different ways to get the food they need to live. Insects that visit the plant are trapped as food. Just like other plants, insect-eating plants also get energy in the process of photosynthesis (光合作用). Insect-eating plants don’t always have to include insects in their diet, however, they seem to be healthier when they do.

How I Learnt to Learn English

Last year, I did not like my English class. Every class was like a bad dream. The teacher spoke so quickly that I did not understand her most of the time. I was afraid to ask questions because of my poor pronunciation (发音).     41         

Then one day I watched an English movie called Toy Story. I fell in love with this exciting and funny movie!     42    Although I could not understand everything the characters ( 角 色 ) said in the movies, their body languages and the expressions on their faces helped me to get the meaning.     43     My pronunciation   got better by   listening   to   the conversations in   English   movies too. I found that listening to something interesting is the secret to language learning. I also learned useful sentences like “It’s a piece of cake”or “You have my word”.     44     But because I wanted to understand the story, I looked them up in a dictionary.

    45    I want to learn new words and more grammar so that I can have a better understanding of English movies.

Clive is a lovely dog. With the help of Clive, Murray, a 14-year-old boy, his condition gets better.

Murray Whooley is an unlucky boy because he has autism (自闭症). He was unable to communicate with (与……交流) others, and the outside world seemed a frightening (可怕的) place for him. He was always alone, and never talked to others, even his parents.

When Murray was six, Clive came into his family. Since then, he has changed Murray’s world.

Clive is big and happy. He stays with Murray and plays with him. He is like Murray’s best friend. Now, Murray has become more open. He is able to go to the shops and other crowded places with Clive. He isn’t afraid to face other people any more.

They both like travelling. Clive has a pet passport. Together, he and Murray have travelled to America and some European countries. They are planning to visit a new place during the Christmas holiday.

My favourite book is The Adventure of Tom Sawyer by Mark Twain. Tom lives with his aunt Polly in a quiet street of St Petersburg, Missouri. He’s a lively and clever young boy, and he finds h    61     interested in many exciting adventures. He runs away with his t     62     friends, Huck Finn and Joe, to an island in the middle of the Mississippi River for several days.

My favourite scene in the book is when everyone thinks Tom is d    63    . He decides to go to his own funeral. He hides and watches for some time, and then s    64     he appears. Everyone is surprised to see him, but they’re also pleased to see him alive. Tom is the hero of the   story,   but   there are o    65     important characters. Huck is an outsider (外来者) and everyone is afraid of him. Becky is pretty with fair hair, Joe is Tom’s best friend, and Injun Joe is the bad man in the story. The theme of the story is about g    66     up. It describes how strangers are seen in small towns of America. Finally, it talks about freedom, social rules and h    67     people are punished (处罚) for bad behavior.

Mark Twain w    68     the story in 1876. But it’s still read and loved by people all over the world today. Although it’s only a s    69    , Mark Twain wrote it in the everyday English of the southern states of America in the 19th century, so it sounds very r    70    .
