We all know memory is necessary to success in studying. How to improve memory? One way might be walking backwards.
Walking backwards, whether doing it really or imagining it, can improve the brainpower in the short term. Researchers did an interesting memory test. 114 volunteers watched a video in which a woman had her bag stolen. Then they answered 20 questions about the information in the video. Ten minutes after watching the video, then they asked the volunteers to divide into three groups. The first two groups moved forwards or backwards 10 meters while the third group stayed still on the same point. The researchers found that the backwards-walking group got two more correct answers on average than the other two groups.
When we walk backwards, everything we learn becomes strange to us. “This forces the brain to think in a different way.” Christine Weber, the researcher from US, told Forbes. It almost always means that our brain needs to be more active and able to think quickly in the short time. Naturally, our short-term memory will improve a lot.
Not only improving our memory, walking backwards also help us keep fit. Compared to walking forward, backward walking puts less pressure and needs smaller movements from the knee joints so that there will be less pain in the knees. What’s more, it is more challenging. You should use muscles and movements that you probably hardly use, making it a perfect way to change your daily exercise for greater fitness. By making people put in more effort, it burns more fat and calories. However, be careful, it will let you get hurt if you have a sore neck.

I remember her words, Mrs. Price, our high school teacher in that little town of Westminster, in Western Maryland, said, “You belong in college, and I’m going to do everything I can to get you there.” For me, college was something out of the question, something on a very far planet, something only, those people who had special rights did. I said, “I can’t go to college because I don’t have the money. I’m going to join the army.” Even though I was graduating at the top of my class in that small town, and enjoyed the experience of learning and thinking.
She said, “Maybe you have a gift that can make a difference in the world. I want you to continue your education. I think I can get you into Johns Hopkins University. And I’m working on the money.” Finally, I was off to college.
One day I was walking from the parking lot to my first class, talking with my friend and classmate, and we passed by a group of men who were digging a deep ditch. Suddenly, I knew why I was in college. She was right. I had a gift that could take me to wonderful places. I decided to make my living with my brain, because I had a choice they didn’t have: an education.
Some years ago, as I thought about the experience, it came to me: “Maybe I could find Mrs. Price. Maybe she’s still living in Westminster. I could go back there and visit her, bring her a gift, and really let her know how much I’m thankful for what she had done for me.”
So, I began to search online for information about where she might be. I soon discovered an article about her death, written in the Baltimore Sun and dated October 8, 2001.
I learn a lesson from my story: If you love someone; if you thank them; if you’re grateful to them, tell them now. One day it will be too late. Well...anyway...Mrs. Price, wherever you are, thank you.
