文章大意:本文是一则寓言故事,通过小树的故事告诉我们不要恩将仇报。

A man was walking through the woods with his axe when a small tree called to him. It said, “Hello, my friend. Can you cut down those bigger trees? They stop me from getting the sun. It is so crowded here that I have no room to grow my roots (根茎). I can’t feel the wind.”

The little tree held out its small leaves. It looked so sad. Then it cried, “If those trees were gone, I’d be able to grow. A year from now, I’d be the biggest tree here. But for now, I’m just a small tree.”

The man thought for some time and agreed. He walked over to the bigger trees and started cutting them down. He cleared lots of space around the small tree. Now it could be able to feel the sun and wind. It would grow bigger and become the biggest tree in that area.

But something else happened. The sun came first, burning (燃烧) the small tree, as it wasn’t used to so much sunlight. Then heavy wind and rain came, without the bigger trees to protect (保护) it, the small tree was hit by the rainstorm. Soon, the tree was almost dead.

“You’ve been quite not clever,” said a snake that saw what had happened, looking at the poor tree and its small leaves. “In fact, you brought this on yourself. 文章大意:本文介绍了曾子告诉我们反省的方法以及反省的重要性。

“I have three introspections (反省) a day: Am I not loyal to others? Am I not faithful (守信的) with friends? Am I not hard-working in my schoolwork?”

—The Analects of Confucius (论语)

How can we better ourselves in daily life? How can we live a good life? Zengzi (505—435 BC), a follower of Confucius, might give us an answer.

Zengzi said that we should reflect on (反省) ourselves many times a day. We can do this by asking questions. For example, have we tried our best to do things for the people? By thinking about this, we can see if we are loyal. Being loyal to others can help us to be successful in society (社会). Have we kept promises to our friends? It is important for us to get on well with others. Also, as students, have you reviewed (复习) what you’ve learned at school in time? Reviewing schoolwork can lead us to real improvement. It tells us that introspection is important. All too often, we don’t know if we are doing the right thing or not. We don’t know what our actions can bring about. So, introspection helps us to truly know ourselves. We can then right our wrongs and change for the better. Remember to reflect on your actions every day and you will become better.

March is the month to learn from Lei Feng in China. He helped many people during his 22 years of life. He passed away more than 60 years ago. But the “Lei Feng spirit” still calls on Chinese people to do volunteer work.

The Youth Team of Shougang Winter Olympics Service is one of the volunteer groups that worked at the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics. The 192 young volunteers worked for 66 days and offered more than 15,000 hours of service.

It is not an easy job to work as a volunteer. Liu Junyu, 28, from the team, found out the way to help people get in and out of the venue (场馆) more easily and safely. Other volunteers helped clear 50,000 m2 of ice and snow each day. This made sure that the games worked well.

Also, a volunteer needs to learn a lot. According to Jiang Meng, a 26-year-old volunteer from the Shougang Group, volunteers needed to know all about the venues. They also kept in mind the history and stories behind them to better show the beauty of Shougang and Beijing to guests.

“People say volunteering is about giving, but I’ve got a lot, too, through being a volunteer—the honor (光荣), as well as the growing personal skills,” said Jiang.
