A man was walking through the woods with his axe when a small tree called to him. It said, “Hello, my friend. Can you cut down those bigger trees? They stop me from getting the sun. It is so crowded here that I have no room to grow my roots (根茎). I can’t feel the wind.”
The little tree held out its small leaves. It looked so sad. Then it cried, “If those trees were gone, I’d be able to grow. A year from now, I’d be the biggest tree here. But for now, I’m just a small tree.”
The man thought for some time and agreed. He walked over to the bigger trees and started cutting them down. He cleared lots of space around the small tree. Now it could be able to feel the sun and wind. It would grow bigger and become the biggest tree in that area.
But something else happened. The sun came first, burning (燃烧) the small tree, as it wasn’t used to so much sunlight. Then heavy wind and rain came, without the bigger trees to protect (保护) it, the small tree was hit by the rainstorm. Soon, the tree was almost dead.
“You’ve been quite not clever,” said a snake that saw what had happened, looking at the poor tree and its small leaves. “In fact, you brought this on yourself. If you stay with the bigger trees, the sun and rainstorm won’t hurt you seriously. They will protect you instead. If you just wait longer, you will grow to be just as big as them and you will be strong. But now, you are nearly gone.”

“I have three introspections (反省) a day: Am I not loyal to others? Am I not faithful (守信的) with friends? Am I not hard-working in my schoolwork?”
—The Analects of Confucius (论语)
How can we better ourselves in daily life? How can we live a good life? Zengzi (505—435 BC), a follower of Confucius, might give us an answer.
Zengzi said that we should reflect on (反省) ourselves many times a day. We can do this by asking questions. For example, have we tried our best to do things for the people? By thinking about this, we can see if we are loyal. Being loyal to others can help us to be successful in society (社会). Have we kept promises to our friends? It is important for us to get on well with others. Also, as students, have you reviewed (复习) what you’ve learned at school in time? Reviewing schoolwork can lead us to real improvement. It tells us that introspection is important. All too often, we don’t know if we are doing the right thing or not. We don’t know what our actions can bring about. So, introspection helps us to truly know ourselves. We can then right our wrongs and change for the better. Remember to reflect on your actions every day and you will become better.

C.By asking himself questions. | D.By answering others’ questions. |

March is the month to learn from Lei Feng in China. He helped many people during his 22 years of life. He passed away more than 60 years ago. But the “Lei Feng spirit” still calls on Chinese people to do volunteer work.
The Youth Team of Shougang Winter Olympics Service is one of the volunteer groups that worked at the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics. The 192 young volunteers worked for 66 days and offered more than 15,000 hours of service.
It is not an easy job to work as a volunteer. Liu Junyu, 28, from the team, found out the way to help people get in and out of the venue (场馆) more easily and safely. Other volunteers helped clear 50,000 m2 of ice and snow each day. This made sure that the games worked well.
Also, a volunteer needs to learn a lot. According to Jiang Meng, a 26-year-old volunteer from the Shougang Group, volunteers needed to know all about the venues. They also kept in mind the history and stories behind them to better show the beauty of Shougang and Beijing to guests.
“People say volunteering is about giving, but I’ve got a lot, too, through being a volunteer—the honor (光荣), as well as the growing personal skills,” said Jiang.
31. What do Chinese people learn from Lei Feng?32. What do we know about the Youth Team of Shougang Winter Olympics Service?
33. Why did the volunteers clear ice and snow every day?
34. What can people get from volunteering?
35. Would you like to do some volunteer jobs? Why?
Liang Kaiyu, a 30-year-old engineer, loved building things and lived a happy life with his family in the past. But one mistake during the work made him lost his left leg and changed his life.
After being in hospital for more than 20 days, he went back home and was ready for the real test—life without his left leg. Going through the darkness was difficult for him. “It is my wife and my two sons who keep telling me not to give up,” Liang says.
About two months after the accident, he got his prosthetic limb (假肢). And on the 100th day, he could walk with it. What’s more, he used his engineering skills to make it more comfortable and stronger than a real leg.
On the Internet, Liang saw many people ride bikes, dance and even ski with their prosthetic limbs. They live no differently from others. “Although I don’t know who they are, their words have made me feel better,” Liang says. After seeing this, Liang started to post videos about his daily life. “I hope they can also be helpful to people like me,” he says.
On Sina Weibo, his story has got a lot of views. Many people call him the “Iron (钢铁) Leg Man”. “What surprises us most is not his skills, but his confidence (信心) after such an accident,” someone says.
