March is the month to learn from Lei Feng in China. He helped many people during his 22 years of life. He passed away more than 60 years ago. But the “Lei Feng spirit” still calls on Chinese people to do volunteer work.

The Youth Team of Shougang Winter Olympics Service is one of the volunteer groups that worked at the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics. The 192 young volunteers worked for 66 days and offered more than 15,000 hours of service.

It is not an easy job to work as a volunteer. Liu Junyu, 28, from the team, found out the way to help people get in and out of the venue (场馆) more easily and safely. Other volunteers helped clear 50,000 m2 of ice and snow each day. This made sure that the games worked well.

Also, a volunteer needs to learn a lot. According to Jiang Meng, a 26-year-old volunteer from the Shougang Group, volunteers needed to know all about the venues. They also kept in mind the history and stories behind them to better show the beauty of Shougang and Beijing to guests.

“People say volunteering is about giving, but I’ve got a lot, too, through being a volunteer—the honor (光荣), as well as the growing personal skills,” said Jiang.

SEND A NET, SAVE A LIFE.

Every 2 minutes, a child dies of malaria(疟疾). Most of them are children under the age of 5. It only costs $10 to send a life-saving bed net(蚊帐) to protect a poor family. Together, we can end malaria for good!

Things You Can Do

1. Send a net. We have a simple way to solve the problem. For a family in Africa, a net can mean the difference between life and death. For just $10, you can protect a family and save a life.

2. Start a team. Increase your influence by asking your friends, family, and neighbours to join you and send nets. You can organize a sports game, a talent show or an outdoor market to raise money for the project.

3. Make your voice heard. Make sure other people know that the fight to end malaria is very important for you. Help more people know about the cause.

Katherine started to join in the fight against malaria when she was only 5 years old. When she was 10, she and her mother Lynda had sent more than 10,000 bed nets to families in need. She is still working hard for the poor families.

Their stories may not be able to change the world, but they can encourage the world to fight against difficulties.

文章大意:本文主要介绍了Yang Bingjun在自己的家乡从事教学20多年,文章具体介绍了他为什么会这样做,以及他的希望。

【推荐2】Yang Bingjun has taught in Xiaozhai Pimary School for more than twenty years. He is widely considered as the founder (创建者) of this small school in Dongdi, one of the poorest towns of Guizhou Province.

The man worked as a teacher shortly after he graduated (毕业) from middle school in 1995. “After graduation, I decided to work outside for half a year before continuing schooling, as my family was poor,” Yang said. He then went to Guangdong Province. One day when he found a child playing the piano in the big city, he decided to do something for the kids in his hometown. According to Yang, almost 90 percent of the people there couldn’t read a letter at that time, and most of the children were busy with farm work.

He went back and set up a “school” in 1996 together with a man. They used an old house from a family as a classroom and made desks and chairs themselves. “After school, I had to visit families from door to door, trying to persuade (说服) parents to send their children to us,” said Yang.

He has always encouraged his students to study hard so that they can walk out of the deep mountains. Yang will continue to stay in the village as long as he is needed. “I hope the children can live a life different from mine in the future,” he said.

文章大意:本文主要介绍了克拉克在学校的一栋建筑前免费聆听大家的问题,他认为听众也可以通过这种方式更多地了解自己之外的事情。

【推荐3】Clark can often be found sitting in front of a building at his university, for a few hours at a time. He always holds up a handmade poster that reads “Free Listening”.

Rana is a student at the same university. One day, she decided to sit down and talk to Clark. She said later that she feels relaxed every time she talks to Clark. Now they have been good friends.

Clark is 27 years old this year. He has been doing this for about two years.“I believe that listening plays an important role in our life,” he said. When someone talks to Clark, he lets them decide what to talk about. Conversations can be light or serious. Sometimes, people just want to talk about what they make for dinner. Other times, conversations are serious. The person might be emotional or stressed. Whatever they want to talk about, it does good to them, he said. Listeners can also learn more about things outside themselves in this way.

Andrew Wolf is a professor at the university. He encourages what Clark is doing. Wolf said that listening helps people deal with their challenges that they are going through.
