For what it’s worth, it’s never too late, or in my case, too early to be whoever you want to be.
There’s no time limit. Start whenever you want.
You can change or stay the same. There are no rules to this thing.
We can make the best or the worst of it. I hope you make the best of it.
I hope you meet people with a different point of view.
I hope you live a life you’re proud of.
If you find that you’re not, I hope you have the strength to start all over again.
And I hope you see things that startle you.
I hope you feel things you never felt before.
Yours,
Dad

If you feel stressed at school, what can you do to make yourself happier? Some may eat their favorite food or listen to some music. Others may go for a walk or get some exercise. A new study found another great way to lower students’ stress—playing with dogs.
Scientists studied 105 students between the ages of eight and nine. Thirty-five trained dogs and their trainers also took part in the test. The children were divided into 3 groups. The students in the first group spent 20 minutes with a dog and its trainer. They watched the trained dogs perform and even played with them. They did this twice a week for 4 weeks. The second group spent the same amount of time (时长) doing exercise to relax. The last group did neither of these things.
During this time, the scientists recorded the students’ cortisol levels (皮质醇水平). Cortisol is a stress hormone (激素). The more stressed you feel, the more cortisol you will have in your body. What did the scientists find? Both the second and the third groups showed rises in cortisol levels. The first group, however, showed no big increase. And the children in this group had the lowest cortisol levels right after playing with the dogs.
According to the study, students enjoy playing with dogs, and it helps them become happier. The stress hormone falls over time this way, which is good for students’ health. But here comes the next question: Is 20 minutes of playtime with a dog the best amount of time? Scientists are going to keep working to find out the answer.

The relationship between dogs and humans began around 30,000 years ago. Wolves followed humans to eat leftovers (剩饭) from hunting trips. The friendlier ones got more food from the humans, and over many years the wolves evolved into the pet dogs we know.
Dog’s intelligence, loyalty (忠诚) and good sense of smell and hearing made them perfect companions and helpers. In fact, dogs that have special skills help humans in many parts of life. They are used in all sorts of assistant roles, for example, they help people with disabilities and medical conditions, or those who are feeling worried or unhappy.
The story of guide dogs
In 1931, two British women started training dogs to help soldiers who lost their eyesight in the First World War. This was the start of the Guide Dogs for the Blind Association. A guide dog’s training begins as a puppy. They learn many skills, such as sitting, staying, waiting ect., before they are matched with an owner, and they train together before their partnership begins.
Other service dogs
Dogs can help people with other disabilities and medical conditions as well. “Hearing dogs” help people with hearing problems by warning them of important sounds like smoke alarms or phones. Dogs also support people with diabetes (a condition that leads to too much sugar in the blood) by reminding their owners when they need to take medicine.
Emotional support dogs
Dogs can comfort people and help to build their confidence. In the UK, some charities bring dogs into hospitals to cheer people up. People also take dogs into schools and pupils can read to them, boosting the students’ confidence and enjoyment of books.
