文章大意:本文是一篇记叙文,主要讲述了作者的方向感很差。一次有个人问路,作者回答“不知道”,稍后才明白刚才那人问的是他工作的地方。当作者踏进办公室时,很尴尬地和那人又见面了。

Some people have a very poor sense of direction. Unluckily, I am one of them. I have visited a place many times but I may still get lost there the next time.

When I was a little girl, I never dared to ask strangers the way. And so I used to walk around in circles and hope that by chance I would get to the place I was going to.

Now, I am no longer too shy to ask people for directions, but I often receive helpless or even wrong information. So I try to avoid giving people wrong directions. If anyone ever asks me the way somewhere, I would say, “Sorry, I am a stranger here.”

Once on my way to work I was stopped by a man. He asked me if I could tell him the way to the Friendship Building. I gave him my usual reply. But just as I walked on only a few steps, I realized that he had asked the way to my office building. However, I had no time to turn back and look for him. I was rushing to meet with someone at my office and I didn’t want to keep him waiting.

When I just got to my office, the secretary (秘书) showed in the man who had asked me for directions. Imagine how embarrassed I was and how surprised he was when we saw each other at the first sight.

If you remember the following six ways of information, you’ll know how to protect yourself. You’ll be much safer at school and in your everyday life.
1)Always notice the environment around you. You shouldn’t walk alone out. Make sure where the public phones are. If anything dangerous happens, you can find them quickly.
2)Don’t use earphones when running in the schoolyard or on the street. You will keep yourself from the outside world and can easily get into trouble.
3)When taking a bus, school bags should be carried towards the front of your bodies instead of putting them on your backs. When buses are crowded, it is easy enough for thieves to steal the things in the bag on your back.
4)If you are followed by a stranger, cross the street and go in the other direction. Let the stranger know he or she is there. Next, go and get help from others if it is necessary. Don’t go home directly. You are safer in the street than you are in your home or in a lift.
5)If you have to take a bus to a place far away, try to get to the stop only a few minutes before the buses leave. On buses, don’t sit alone. You should sit behind the driver or with friends. Don’t sleep.
6)Don’t play with matches or candles, because it may cause fire. If your house catches fire and you have to escape through smoke, move on your hands and knees with your head 30-60 centimeters above the floor. Please remember there is cleaner and cooler air near the floor during the fire.

文章大意:本文主要介绍作者去巧克力工厂参观的经历。

Learn about chocolate

Do you know how chocolate is made? Recently my class had a field trip to the Cad bury Chocolate Factory in Toronto, Canada. We were divided into 10 groups and visited an old building.     26     Then we got some ear buds (耳塞) to protect our ears from the noise of the machines. We also needed to wear disposable (一次性的) lab clothes and hair nets (发网) to make sure we didn’t dirty their work area.

After these preparations, we went upstairs and entered the chocolate-making area. The floor was filled up with many machines.     27     The whole floor only had two people working, because machines did most of the work.

Next, the guide explained the history of chocolate-making.     28     and there were more than 1, 000 people working in the factory. But now the factory is very different. It’s amazing how technology is changing people’s life.

Later, we saw the chocolate-making process. We got a cocoa bean, some powdered (粉状的) chocolate and a final chocolate product. I opened the cocoa bean and tasted it. It tasted bitter, kind of like dark chocolate.     29     The powdered chocolate tasted good already. It is a combination of cocoa beans, milk and sugar. The final product tasted delicious.

Finally, we bought some chocolate at a shop in the factory. It was at a very low price.     30     I also learned about the chocolate industry.

文章大意:本文讲述了音乐教育的重要性,从音乐的功能上谈了音乐的必要性。

How important is music? When they are asked this question, students and parents usually answer that music is nice, but not very important. It is often considered only as entertainment (娱乐), but not the first choice for education.     31     In fact, music education is necessary and important for all students.

Music tells us who we are. Music shows the creators’ thinking and valued, as well as the social environment it came from.     32     Rock music also stands for a lifestyle. The jazz influence that George Gershwin and other musicians introduced into their music is clearly American be-cause it came from American musical traditions.

33     It explored (探索) the motive (情感的) meanings. Science explains how the sun rises and sets. We need every possible way to discover and answer to our world because no one way can get it all.

Music is a form (形式) of thought, as powerful as science.     34     Through the language we express our feelings, our ideas, our imagination and our hopes so that they can be shared with others. When we do not let our children receive good music education, we take away from them the meanings that music expresses.     35     Music does.

So music education is much more necessary than people realize.
