In September 2021, Taobao opened a store, selling everything for just RMB 0.01. For example, people only need to spend RMB 0.01 on a bag of rice to be expired (过期) in three months, and then the store will send it to their homes for free. The shop is the first online food bank of its kind in China. It provides food close to its use-by date for people in need. “These foods are still good to eat,” said Liu from Green Oasis, an organization that owns the store. To make sure the foods are going to people who need them most, the store asks shoppers to provide something to show that they are disabled or poor. Because they have trouble feeding themselves. The organization said it got 1,000 tons (吨) of food from restaurants, supermarkets, food factories and some other places. But before opening the online food bank, the organization mainly gave out food through its physical stores (实体店). Green Oasis opened China’s first food bank in 2014. It has more than 200 stores across the country, with more than half of them in Shanghai. It expects its first online store to help it reach more people. “Food banks can not only give help to people in need, but also cut down food waste,” said Liu. It is reported that China wastes about 18 million tons of food each year. The waste alone can feed 30 to 50 million people. The world’s first food bank appeared in the US in 1967.
