Today I went to my daughter’s school and gave a talk about kindness to 60 kids and their teachers. We had a talk about the     31     of kindness.

David was a truck driver. Recently he was thought to be a great man.

Last Monday, he was driving along the road with his son and his friend. Suddenly he saw a car hit another truck (卡车) and catch fire. The accident was just in front of his truck. Without thinking, he stopped his truck, found a fire extinguisher (灭火器) and ran towards the broken car. But other car drivers still sat in their cars. David began to fight the fire. His action encouraged his friend. He also came and gave David a hand. Later, David’s son and four other men came to help. Another five men pulled the car driver and her granddaughter, a three-year-old girl, out of the car successfully. They were all safe except that the driver’s leg was hurt.

When people talked about David’s brave action, David said, “I didn’t think too much then. I just did what other people would do in that situation. When I first got out of the truck, I wished they wouldn’t be dead. When I saw they were alive, it was really great!”

Many social media posts (社交媒体帖子) may let you believe that everyone is happy all the time, but being happy all the time is not possible.

As a teenager, you probably expected to get good grades in an exam or to win the most important basketball game, but it didn’t happen. Good results make you happy and bad results make you sad. But sadness can drive you to improve yourself next time.

However, when people get into sadness for a long time and it starts to affect (影响) their lives, it’s called depression (抑郁). You don’t want to get out of bed. You don’t feel like studying or going out with your friends. I remember the same feeling when my dog Rebel died in an accident. I remember that he followed me to school. Now he was gone, and I lost all interests to do anything.

My parents told me dogs don’t live forever. What was more, Rebel had a good life. If I had a good life, Rebel must be happy, too.

Depression is not a person’s mistake. It’s normal to feel sad sometimes. Many great people, like the comedy actor Jim Carrey, once get depressed. But you should know what to do to stop depression or make yourself less depressed.

When you feel down, you must not keep yourself away from the world. Try to share your feelings with a family member or a good friend. Staying at home by yourself will make you more lonely. You should stand up, open the window, and throw away (抛弃) the sadness.

Zheng Lin is a middle school student in Hebei. Earlier this month, Zheng Lin and his friends stood on the street with a box to ask people for donations (捐款). Later they gave the money to the poor students in their school.

Chinese teenagers raise money with a group. Usually, they ask for donations on the street or in the park. And they sell things like their old books and clothes. They really do a great job. The money usually helps the children in poor areas with new clothes, pens and pencils. It also helps some sick children with their medicine.

Teenagers in the US make donations, too. But they raise money in a different way—by (通过) doing something for others. For example, they sell home-made food or have music concerts in their neighborhood to raise money.

Chinese students like to wait for people to donate, or sell their things to raise money. They can help people in need and also show their love to the world. The US kids get donations and give people something useful in return (作为回报). In this way, they can show their talents and practice getting on with others. More importantly, they have to work hard to get a donation.
