When Kalema was little, she liked to play the piano. One day when she was at her piano on the first floor, a monkey climbed up to ________ her in the practice. This dream came true when Kalema became a wild animal doctor in Africa.

That was 30 years ago. Over the past years, Kalema has never stopped ________ wild animals. She does her best to save the animals in great danger, ________ she doesn’t just protect the animals. She always believes there is ________ she can do to help the local communities and she does it!

Many local people lived a ________ life. Some of them made money by hunting wild animals. Kalema wanted to protect these animals from being killed. The key to doing so, she realized, was to improve the local people’s life. Kalema ________ these people with fast-growing crops(庄稼). By growing the crops, the local people could feed themselves and live a better life. They no longer needed to go hunting. Through Kalema’s hard work, the local people’s attitude(态度) to wild animals has ________ changed over the years. Now, many of these hunters of wild animals have become protectors of them.

So we can save wild animals by saving people and we all can make a ________, can’t we?

Weiqi is a board game for two players. To win, one player must use black or white playing pieces, named stones, to surround (包围) more areas.

The game was invented in China more than 2, 500 years ago. It’s one of the four Chinese traditional fine arts, along with playing guqin, writing and painting, so it owns a wide fanbase in China. Now it is also popular in other parts of the world.

In Germany, the Berlin Weiqi Association (协会) has worked together with the China Cultural Center to host The China Cup, which sees about 50 to 100 players each year. As the cooperation (合作) between China and Germany deepens, many Weiqi training courses (培训课程) are offered and sometimes professional (专业的) players from China are invited to give talks to German Weiqi lovers.

Andreas Urban, the chairman (主席) of Berlin Weiqi Association, discovered a book on Weiqi accidentally. “I tried to understand the rules, but I couldn’t.” said Urban. Schreiber, the vice chairman, was introduced to the game 16 years ago by a classmate. “The first time I played Weiqi, I even couldn’t understand the rules,” he said. But both of them found the game more and more interesting after practice. “I advise children to learn Weiqj. They can learn that there is always someone stronger and it’s OK to lose. They can also learn how to improve from their mistakes and say tomorrow will be better than today,” said Schreiber.

To the experienced (有经验的) players, Weiqi can be very addictive (使人入迷的), as it is not just for fun, but also has a deeper cultural ground. When two players meet on the Weiqi board, they follow the same rules, but may carry completely different methods. One of the best ways to improve is to play against someone who’s stronger, as well as from different cultural backgrounds. This kind of cross-cultural communication helps the development of Weiqi.

A yearbook is a tradition in some high schools. The book contains (包含) the name and the picture of each student in your final year, so that you can remember who you went to school with.

A 15-year-old schoolgirl Catherine Cook and her brother David, 16, wanted more than this. They thought, “We don’t really know our classmates from just a picture, so why not have a yearbook online? You could learn about people’s musical tastes, the movies they like, and so on.” With their hard work, a website named my Yearbook was set up, which soon became popular among schoolmates.

On the website, members can connect with each other by sharing movies, music, photos and study guides. Some students feel that they don’t fit in at school, but can make friends more easily online. My Yearbook users can also make virtual (虚拟的) “Lunch Money” by completing activities on the website. They then give it away to charities (慈善机构) in the my Yearbook “causes” programme, which has sent 22, 000 books to Africa, and bought 20, 000 kilos of rice for people without enough food.

Running the website did not stop Catherine and David from completing their schoolwork successfully. Now, they go on to university, but still manage to put in 50 hours a week developing the website.

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is used to help people keep the balance of yin and yang. But have you ever imagined that one day you can learn herb (药草) planting and TCM courses at school?

A primary school in Nanjing has just o    56     a herb farm. More than 30 herbs are p    57    . Students there are guided (指导) by doctors from a TCM hospital to tell d    58     herbs and learn plant development, medicinal value as well as growing herbs. The hospital has also donated over 100 cartoon books about TCM to help draw children’s a    59     in herbal medicine.

They give students a deeper understanding of TCM, bringing out their sense of p    62     in Chinese traditions and the country’s rich culture.

Also in Shanghai, Tongji University has p    63     foreign students with some chances to plant different kinds of herbs w    64     used in Chinese medicine and cooking. By taking care of the plants, foreign students can get first-hand experience of making herbal medicine from start to finish, and spread TCM culture to their o    65     countries.

The herb planting courses at schools and universities across China get students close to TCM and help pass on the tradition.
