I experienced years of loneliness as a child. My older brother couldn’t be bothered to play with me. His friends laughed at him about looking after his sister. And his interests were far different from mine. With no other kids of my age in the neighborhood. I had to spend hours by myself.
A bright spot for me that turned out was reading. My love of the written word began early as my mother read to me every evening. I loved the colorful photographs in the books. I started reading books on my own before age 5 and my mother took me to the public library once a week to borrow several books. I quickly graduated from common children’s books to ones with fewer pictures and longer chapters. Reading opened new worlds to me. I wasn’t alone any longer.
As I grew older, my mother also encouraged me to make what I wanted. I tried making toy cars with cardboard boxes and putting up buildings from rest cardboard and bits of wood my father gave me. When my mother saw my creations, she told me how creative my designs were. Thus, I began my lifelong interest in making things. I learned a lot about how to extend (延伸) the life of objects and change them into something new and useful. I did well in making things. And it was a trait (特点) that others found helpful. Soon I had friends who wanted to make things with me.
Later, another habit I formed early was being outdoors. My parents made it a point for their two kids to spend time outside no matter the weather or seasons. My brother, of course, raced off to be with his friends, while I had plenty to do myself. There was making leaf houses in autumn, ice skating in winter, and so much more. They’re all memories I treasure today.

Meet Sora, the cool model from OpenAI can turn your words into videos like magic! Just tell Sora your idea, and then watch it make a video right before your eyes.
How good is it?
Videos created by Sora look good on both big and small devices (设备), such as computers and smart phones. Sora can also make scenes (场景) with lots of people doing different things with clear details. It also knows how things should look in real life.
Why is it so good?
Sora looks at many videos and learns from them by breaking (拆分) them into very small bits (片段). It uses these bits to make a new video. The new video is gray at first and very messy (乱糟糟的)—you can’t tell what’s in it. Then, Sora fixes the video until it looks good and smooth.
Sora also gets help from ChatGPT, which turns the user’s short sentences into clear instructions. This helps Sora make the video just as you ask.
Is it good enough?
Sora may find “busy” pictures hard to understand. Especially as a person moves, things around him change. Here is an example.
A video by Sora The video shows a lady walking on a street. | |
◆The picture in the water on the ground changes when she walks. ◆The people in the back move in a normal way and the buildings change as she walks. ◆The woman’s skin (皮肤) looks real, with acne (痤疮;粉刺) marks on her face. ◆However, when the video reaches 30 seconds, the woman’s right and left legs switch places as she walks. |

We usually have a runny nose when catching a cold. Yet our parents tell us not to blow our nose so hard. Why is that?
When you blow your nose very hard, the air can move from your nose to your ears and cause problems. When you have a cold, the tube (管子) that connects your nose to your cars gets smaller. So the air can’t go back to the nose and stays in the ear. This can hurt the eardrum (鼓膜) and may make your ears ring or even cause hearing loss. If the things from your nose go into your ears with viruses (病毒) and bacteria (细菌), it can cause ear infections (感染).
If the air from the nose goes into the eyes, it can make the pressure in the eyes go up. This might cause different eye problems and even affect how well you can see in the long run (从长远来看). This is why, sometimes, when you blow your nose too hard, both your eyes and ears may feel uncomfortable.
To clear your nose, just close one nostril (鼻孔) at a time and softly blow. If your nose is blocked up, putting a warm towel (毛巾) on your nose and forehead (前额) can also help you feel better.
Since your nose and throat (咽喉) are connected, you can also try to get the mucus (粘液) out from your mouth. It’s a good idea to take a deep breath with the nose, then cough quickly to get out the mucus in your mouth.
