Tina was a gymnast (体操运动员) and she could do the gymnastic moves very ______. But the trouble was that she was too proud (骄傲) of herself. When she tried out for the gymnastics team, she put on a perfect performance. The other girls ______ her she was amazing. “See if you can do that!” Tina said. But the coach said ______, and just thought it over.

The next week, when the list of the team members was announced (宣布), Tina’s ______ wasn’t on it. She turned to the girls standing around her. “I’m better than all of you!” she shouted ______, “It’s unfair!”

She went to see the coach. He explained, “You’re ______, but your attitude (态度) is terrible.”

“What do you mean?” Tina asked. “I ______ I am the best, and I can prove (证明) it every time.”

“Making the gymnastics team isn’t just about gymnastics,” the coach said. “It’s also about being on a team. You can’t make the team if you don’t ______ how much everyone has to contribute (作贡献), and encourage each other to do it.”

Tina did not think about what the coach said. ______, she expected the team to fail that year, and it would be the coach’s fault (过错) for not picking her.

But Tina still practiced at the gym every day, carefully staying out of the team’s way. At first she felt very happy to see the girls on the team struggling. But then it started to ______ her. One day, after watching Kim ______ off the parallel bars (双杠) again and again, Tina came to her, and told her what she should do. Kim accepted Tina’s ______, and did much better. Tina felt very ______. She didn’t notice the coach looking on them from across the room.

Over the next few weeks, Tina tried to help the other girls. The team ______ each time they competed, and once they even won their match!

The following year, Tina tried out for the gymnastics team again. This time, her name was on the list. She knew that it was her effort of becoming a better team player that was responsible (……的原因) for her     25    .

Emma was on the way to the Nature Center. She looked sadly out of the window of the bus. Only 50 miles outside town was the farm where she grew up. She thought about the farm all the time, especially the animals.

When her family sold the farm and moved to nearby town. Emma was excited. But when she got to the new school, she felt out of place. She had few classmates to talk to.

The bus came to a stop. “Welcome to the Nature Center,” her teacher said. “A guide will tell us something about the animals, and then you’ll help to feed the baby squirrels. Now I want everyone to find a partner (搭档).”

Emma didn’t have any friends yet. Who would be her partner? Emma got close to Julia, a talkative and outgoing girl. “Could I be your partner?” Emma asked uncertainly.

“Sure,” said Julia warmly.

Together, the girls walked into the center. After the guide’s introduction to the animals, a keeper showed them how to hold the bottle of milk for baby squirrels. Then the girls started to feed their own baby squirrels.

After the babies finished eating, the keeper asked, “Would you like to help feed the adult squirrels, too?”

Emma was quick to volunteer, but when the keeper opened the first cage, an adult squirrel inside jumped out. Emma was calm, held out her band, made quiet sounds, and then quickly got it.

“Wow! You are so brave!” Julia said. “You’re always so quiet. I thought you were afraid of everything.”

“I have grown up on a farm, so I know much about animals. I know that we have to stay calm when animals are afraid or excited.”

The keeper nodded in agreement and asked Emma, “Would you like to volunteer to help out with the animals at the center?”

“Cool! I would love to work here! That’s a great chance!” Emma replied cheerfully.

That afternoon, in the bus on the way back to school. Emma sat next to Julia, her new friend.

The feeling of happiness washed over her.

I entered a university after years of hard study. I thought my life would be full of happiness and knowledge. But my life in the university is not as what I had expected. Then I became lazy and silent,   even puzzled (困惑). I don’t know what my future would be like.

Four years in the university is only a short period. And a half of it has passed already. This year, many people such as my parents and my friends, asked me what I wanted to do and they all told me to make a plan for my life with their thought. I don’t want to take their advice. I want my own style. So I think carefully.

I have been a young volunteer for five years. It has been a happy time and it is a big thing for me. Then I have a dream to join the University Student Volunteer Go West Program. I think I can be a teacher in the west. I would like to try my best to help them. I want to see the world clearly. To make it come true, I will work harder in the next two years. There is an old saying “Where thee is a will, there is a way”. I think my dream will come true in the near future.

At last, I want to say to everybody, “Never give up your dreams, no matter how big or small they are. The path to dream may not be smooth and wide. Even there are some difficulties you will face. But hold on to the end, you can find there is no greater happiness than making our dream come true.”
