Antarctica (南极洲) is the most southern continent (大陆) in the world. Here are some facts about it.
It’s the fifth largest continent in the world. It’s much larger than Europe and nearly twice the size of Australia.
Antarctica is the coldest and windiest place in the world. The lowest temperature in winter has reached -89.2℃. And it is totally different in summer and winter. In summer, the sun shines for 24 hours a day, but in winter, it’s completely dark for about three months.
Many of the scientists in Antarctica are studying the ozone layer (臭氧层). The ozone layer is getting thinner and thinner. The biggest “hole” is over Antarctica. Famous for the photos he took along the Chinese railway, Wang Fuchun passed away (去世) at the age of 79. His wonderful photos recorded the ever-changing situation in China from 1978 to 2014.
Over these years, he had ridden on about 1, 000 trains and covered more than 100, 000 kilometers, on every line in China. Each trip was clearly noted down in a notebook; he took about 200, 000 pictures, and recorded each by its place. ①
Being an artist, Wang found that taking photos bridged the two worlds: art and real life. He could make art with his camera and increasingly he felt that his goal was not art, but life. His pictures were all black and white, but what he recorded was colorful. ②
The railway means a lot to a Chinese. A railway ticket connects a homesick man with his hometown, where his loved ones are waiting for him; a railway journey leads to a promising future that he can fight for; and a railway trip takes him to fascinating places with his family. Those are important moments in one’s life and that was exactly why Wang liked to record them. ③
From the pictures Wang Fuchun took, he felt the change of Chinese society. He preferred to record the hope that pushed people onto trains. China is rushing to the modern world. Steam (蒸汽) trains are hardly seen now. The conditions on green-skinned trains have been greatly improved. Then high-speed trains have been part of our daily life. Increasingly colorful lifestyles and improved living standards are also seen on the trains. ④
He liked the message of hope and he was proud of what China had achieved.

Buck did not read the newspapers. He did not know that trouble was coming for every big dog in California. Gold-diggers (淘金者) had found gold in northwest Canada, and these men wanted big, strong dogs to work for them in the cold and snow of the north.
Buck had lived in Mr. Miller’s house for four years since he was born. There were large gardens and fields of fruit trees around the house, and a river nearby. In a big place like this, of course, there were many other dogs, but they lived together in the kennels (狗舍), or inside the house. But Buck was neither a house dog nor a kennel dog. He was king—king over the whole of Mr. Miller’s lands. He went swimming with Mr. Miller’s sons, and walking with his daughters. He carried the grandchildren on his back, and he sat at Mr. Miller’s feet in front of the fire in winter.
This was 1897 when the discovery of gold brought men from everywhere to northwest Canada for gold-digging. But Buck did not read the newspapers. And he did not know that Manuel, one of Mr. Miller’s farmers, needed money for his large family. One day, when Mr. Miller was away on business. Manuel and Buck left the garden together. It was just an evening walk, Buck thought. No one saw them go, and only a strange man saw them arrive at the railway station. This man talked to Manuel, and gave him some money. Then he tied a piece of rope around Buck’s neck.
Buck growled (低吼). Gradually it was hard for him to breathe when the rope was pulled hard around his neck. He jumped at the man in anger. The man caught Buck and forced him to lie on his back. For a few moments he was unable to move. When the train arrived, the two men threw him into the train…

①April 24, 2024 was the 9th Space Day of China and this marked the 30th year of China’s Bei Dou Satellite Navigation System (卫星导航系统) (the BDS).
②Let’s first get to know the background, steps, and meaning of developing the BDS.
③In the late 20th century, China started to explore how to develop a navigation satellite system suitable for its national conditions. The BDS has been independently developed by China to meet the needs of the country’s national safety and development.
④During that time, China gradually made a three-step plan of development: to complete the development of the BDS-1 and provide services to the whole country by the end of 2000; to complete the development of the BDS-2 and provide services to the Asia-Pacific region (亚太地区) by the end of 2012; and to complete the development of the BDS and provide services worldwide around 2020.
⑤The BDS is one of four international satellite navigation systems, along with the United States’ GPS, Russia’s GLONASS and the European Union’s Galileo. As the BDS joins hands with other navigation satellite systems, China will work with all other countries to make the BDS better serve the world and benefit humans. That’s the meaning of developing the BDS.
⑥The BDS have two main advantages. The other three systems have 24 satellites. China’s BDS has six more satellites. This can improve the BDS’ accuracy (精准度) in China and the Asia-Pacific region to 5 meters, compared with a 10-meter accuracy in other areas.
⑦The BDS has another advantage—the short message service. It allows users to have two-way communication. In areas that are not covered by communication signals (信号), users can send short messages, even in deserts and forests.
⑧Almost all of us have used the BDS for positioning with our smartphones. But how do our phones know where in the world. The Beidou system has been used in: we are and in which direction we are going? The satellites in space help our phones calculate our position. Besides positioning, the BDS is also widely used in our daily life.
36. Which paragraph does the picture on the left mainly support?A.Paragraph 4. | B.Paragraph 5. | C.Paragraph 6. | D.Paragraph 8. |
A.The BDS is the pride of China. |
