Everyone has a dream. Some people dream of scoring in the World Cup Final. Others want to travel around the world. I dream of being a singer. I’m a normal seventeen-year-old girl living in a quiet village. I go to school, have a part-time job in my dad’s shop and enjoy spending time with my best friends, Cassie and Skye.
“Pencils down, please!” I quickly try to finish writing one last sentence but Miss Jones sees me. “Ellie! The exam is over! ” “Please, Miss…another thirty seconds…five?” But she takes my paper.
There’s nothing I can do now. I hate biology! I want to study music.
“You can’t study music!” said Dad when I told him in September last year. “If you want a good job, you need to study science.” “He’s right. The sciences are important, Ellie, ” agreed Skye. “I’m going to study chemistry, biology, physics and math.” “Boring! Why don’t you study French like me?” suggested Cassie, my other best friend. “Mr. Lake, the French teacher, is handsome!” I never told anyone about my dream after that.
Now here I am trying not to fall asleep as Miss Jones finishes collecting the answer papers. I stayed up studying all night. I’m really tired. I close my eyes. I only want to rest for a minute. But soon I’m not in the exam room…I’m on stage in front of thousands of fans. My fans! They are shouting my name…I start to play the guitar and they all cheer…they sing the words to my latest hit …“Ellie! Ellie!” Miss Jones’s angry voice wakes me up. “Eh…? Sorry? ” “It’s time to go home! ” she says, shaking her head. I’m the only person left in the room. Everyone else has already gone. I feel stupid as I pick up my bag and walk towards the door. Outside, it’s raining. It seems like it will rain forever and I haven’t got an umbrella. “Ellie! Ellie! Wait for me!” I turn around and see Skye running towards me.

Are you feeling hungry? Maybe it’s a while until your next meal, so perhaps now you’re thinking about reaching for a brightly colored packet with something delicious inside. Maybe it’s time for a snack. You’re not alone, we all do it-but do you know how much work we need to develop to make the snacks that we all know and love?
Companies have to work out what people like. Traditionally, they might just have asked people about their snack habits. In today’s digital age, apps can ask customers to choose the tastes they like. Companies can also search the internet for every restaurant menu in a specific market, looking out for the latest taste trends (趋势).
Snack trends also change over time. When British supermarkets were encouraged to take away unhealthy snacks from the shelves, companies were quick to provide healthier snacks. They can also reflect different histories of people from different countries. One British company found that snacks with South Asian tastes sold well in the UK, but not so well in the US, and in the US, there is less traditional Indian food.
Of course, a perfect idea might not be that useful in real life. Ingredients (原料) that work well in a restaurant, might not work well on a biscuit. Snacks with fresh ingredients may have too short a shelf life (保质期) to be good products. Some companies need to spend much money keeping the snacks fresh, and that stops them from making money.
There are many reasons influencing our snacks. Some may reflect our tastes successfully, but can be influenced by their process.
46. When will people think about having a snack according to the passage?47. In today’s digital age, how many ways are mentioned for companies to work out what people like?
48. What did the companies do when the British supermarkets took away unhealthy snacks?
49. What does the underlined sentence in paragraph 3 want to show us?
50. Why can’t snacks with fresh ingredients be good products?
Summer is right around the corner. In the city of Blackpool on the English coast, that means good times at the zoo. They have a lot of different animals.
There’s lots to see, lots to do, lots of fun for the family including snacks—burgers, barbecue, even noodles. And all those become one animal’s delicious food—one that’s not part of the Blackpool Zoo—Seagull (海鸥).
Seagulls are large birds. When they see food, they want it, and they don’t care who has that food, where that food comes from or who is going to eat it. They are just flying down to steal people’s food. And it’s not just humans who have to watch out for them. They can notice the zookeeper, so they know where the food is going to be. Sometimes they can even take food from the penguins.
The staff at the Blackpool Zoo has tried and failed many times to keep the seagulls away, they even fly kites to keep them away. But nothing seems to work. Then they hit upon the idea of having a living scarecrow (稻草人)—you know what I’m saying—they dressed a worker in an eagle (鹰) costume to scare away the seagulls. It actually seems to work. And it’s great fun for the visitors to enjoy.
Now the zoo plans to have five people do the work. It’ll pay each of them10. 8 pounds an hour. That’s just about 13. 3 U. S. dollars. What a great job to be outside in a zoo with some amazing animals! There are already 200 people asking for the job, many of them are from outside the U. K. The zoo has had vegetable costumes, fruit costumes, different kinds of animal costumes for people who are willing to dress up and play the part.
So if you’ve ever dreamed of flying like an eagle or running around in an eagle suit with your wings, now’s the time to take flight. The Blackpool Zoo is still welcoming you.
