Last night my Chinese friend took me to a concert of Chinese folk music. The piece which was played on the erhu moved me a lot. The music was beautiful, but under the beauty I sensed a strong sadness and pain. The piece had a simple name, Erquan Yingyue. Later I looked up the history of Erquan Yingyue, and I began to understand the sadness in the music.
The music was written by Abing who was born in 1893. His mother died when he was very young. Abing’s father taught him to play many musical instruments, and by age 17 Abing was known for his musical ability. However, after his father died, Abing’s life grew worse. He was very poor. He developed a serious illness and became blind. For several years, he had no home. He lived on the streets and played music to make money. Even after Abing got married and had a home again, he continued to sing and play on the streets. He performed in this way for many years.
Abing’s amazing musical skills made him very popular during his lifetime. By the end of his life, he could play over 600 pieces of music. It is a pity that only six pieces of music in total were recorded for the future world to hear. Today, Abing’s Erquan Yingyue has become one of China’s national treasures. Its sad beauty not only paints a picture of Abing’s own life but also makes people recall their deepest wounds from their own sad or painful experiences.

Jack and Mia had worked on a song for Saturday’s band competition. Jack finally thought of an ending and couldn’t wait to play it for her.
“Hey buddy!” his friend Liam came when the bell rang.
“Ready for basketball after school?” Uh-oh, Jack has forgotten all about basketball. He didn’t want to refuse Liam, but he really wanted to try out the new ending with Mia immediately. Maybe if he could find an excuse.
“Hey, Liam,” Jack said, “I don’t feel well today. A-h-em!” He gave a small cough. “Another time?” His heart was beating fast.
“Sure, no problem. Feel better soon.” Liam replied and walked away.
“Lying was easier than I imagined,” Jack breathed a sigh of relief. He thought he could finish the song without hurting Liam’s feelings.
Back at Jack’s home, the ending turned out to be perfect when Jack and Mia tried it out.
“That sounded great, guys.” Liam stood on Jack’s basement (地库) steps, looking at Jack surprisingly.
“Oh, no.” Jack said to himself, trying to think quickly. “It was strange. I suddenly felt fine as soon as I came back home.” His heartbeat is racing and palms (手掌) were sweating. He hoped his mind could be fast enough to keep up with his new lie. “I would have met you at the playground, but it was too late. And then Mia stopped by, and...”
“But Jack, I didn’t stop by. You called me,” Mia said, shaking her head.
Liam managed a smile. There was no doubt that he was unhappy. He left a small case and said, “I’ve brought you a movie since you were not feeling well.” Before Jack could think of something to say, Liam left and so did Mia. Jack felt quite awful—he was worried that he might lose them because of his lies. Jack decided to stop lies from destroying their friendship.
The next morning, Jack apologized (道歉) to Liam for lying to him.

Fourteen-year-old Jimmy Cooper and the other boys on the local teenage football team may sometimes lose a game, but they won a fight against bullying.
Danny Edwards, the team’s “water boy”, was being bullied at school. Danny has had a speech disorder (语言障碍) since his birth. When he grew up, kids made fun of him for the way he talked and the way he dressed. Each day, Danny went to school in a favourite suit, tie and fedora hat (软呢帽). Danny didn’t think it was a big deal. “I…just feel…really…comfortable in it,” he said.
Jimmy was upset when he found out Danny was being bullied. “I thought to myself, no one should be picked on for the way he looks or speaks,” said Jimmy.
So Jimmy decided to wear the same suit and hat to school, too. “I did it to stand up for Danny and show him that bullying is not right. I wanted him to feel happy and safe and know that anywhere he goes he’ll be treated fairly by his friends,”Jimmy said. “I knew Danny would like it. I told my mum that I didn’t care what people thought about me in school because I was doing it for Danny.”
When Jimmy told the other boys on the team what he was planning, they wanted to be part of it, too. So they planned a “Danny Edwards Appreciation Day (感恩日).”
They decided that on a special day, instead of wearing football jerseys (球衣), they would dress like Danny. Word spread about the special day, and other kids in school decided to show their support, too. On the planned day, they all dressed in suits and ties and met in the school library where they cheered, stomped (跺) their feet, and chanted “Danny! Danny! Danny!”.
“I was…really…really happy, and it made…my…day, ” said Danny.
