Most people have heard of the Great Wall of China, but not many people outside of China know about the Grand Canal. This man-made waterway—known in China as Da Yunhe is 1, 700 kilometers long and some parts of it are more than 2, 000 years old. It links (连接) the north of China with Hangzhou, a city in the southern part of the country. It’s the longest man-made waterway in the world.

The Grand Canal was built as a way to transport grain (谷物) from the rich land in China’s south to cities in the north. In fact, it’s not one canal, but a system of canals and rivers linked together. It’s still an important part of the transport system in China. Thousands of boats use it every day to transport grain and many other types of things.

Now the Chinese government is doing new work on the Grand Canal. It is making parts of it deeper, so bigger ships can use it. The canal will also help to move water. There is a lot of rain in the south of China, but not as much in the north. The canal will carry millions of liters of water from the south to the north.

The Grand Canal is much less famous than the Great Wall so not very many tourists visit it. But it’s possible to go on a cruise (游船) along some of the oldest parts of the canal. Passengers on these cruises see beautiful parts of China that other visitors don’t see.

The emblem looks like the Chinese character “九”. That means the 9th Asian Winter Games. It also looks like the Chinese character “合”. It describes Chinese people’s wish to get together with friends from other Asian countries. It also shows the beauty of Chinese characters to the world.

In the emblem, the short track speed skater represents (代表) the sports spirit of the players across Asia. The lilac (丁香花), the flower of Harbin, symbolizes Harbin’s city culture of warmheartedness (热心). And the red sun represents the wish of Asian countries to go after progress and peace. The emblem allows people to easily see the time and place of the sports event.

The idea of the two mascots, Binbin and Nini, came from two lovely Siberian (西伯利亚的) tiger cubs ( 幼兽) born in Harbin in September 2023. The word “bin” is part of the name of the city, Harbin, and “ni” shares the same pronunciation as “you” in Chinese. The two names show the meaning of the words “Harbin welcomes you”.

Besides, Binbin is a mascot representing ice sports. It is skating happily, wearing winter sportswear and ice skates. Nini on a snowboard represents snow sports. It wears a traditional Chinese red jacket. They are so cute, aren’t they?

The Mogao Caves (莫高窟) are a very special place in China, which are located in Dunhuang, Gansu Province. The Mogao Caves are thousands of years old and were listed as a world heritage (遗产) site by UNESCO in 1987.

Many people, including archaeologists (考古学家) and researchers, work hard to take care of the Mogao Caves and learn more about (A) them. Fan Jinshi is one of them.

Fan was born in Beijing on July 9, 1938. Her father was a graduate of Tsinghua University and had a strong interest in Chinese classical art and culture.

Influenced by her father; Fan liked visiting museums when she was in middle school. With the great love of Chinese culture; she studied in the archaeology department in Peking University and graduated in 1963. Then she started working at Dunhuang and has worked there ever since.She spends almost 60 years taking care of Dunhuang. People call her the “Daughter of Dunhuang”.

On May 4, 2023, “Daughter of Dunhuang” Fan Jinshi returned to Peking University and brought back 10 million RMB donations to set up the Fan Jinshi Education Fund (基金) to ▲ .

“Money made should be spent in the right way. People cannot only think of themselves,” she said: “Hopefully the setting of the Fund can help Dunhuang studies at the university, so it can raise cultural confidence and strength.”
