Where is Love? How can we find Love?
Once, a little boy wanted to meet Love. He knew it was a long trip to where Love lived, so he got his things ready with some pizzas and drinks and started off. When he passed three streets, he saw an old woman sitting in the park and watching some birds. She looked very hungry. The boy gave her a pizza. She took it and smiled (微笑) at him. The smile was so beautiful that he wanted to see it again, so he gave her a coke. Once again she smiled. The boy was very happy.
They sat there all afternoon, eating and smiling, but they said noting. When it grew dark, the boy decided to leave. Before leaving, he came up to the old woman and gave her a hug (拥抱). The woman gave him her biggest smile ever.
When the boy opened the door of his house, his mother was surprised by the look of joy on his face and asked what had made him so happy. “I had lunch with Love. She has got the most beautiful smile in the world.” said the boy.
At the same time, the old woman’s son was also surprised at his mother’s pleasure (快乐) and asked why. “I ate a pizza in the park with Love,” she said, “and he is much younger than I expected (预料).”

Magpies (喜鹊) are everywhere all over the world. They often share the common meaning of luck, no matter which culture they are found in. In the UK, there is a poem about what seeing a different number of magpies means:
One for sadness
Two for joy
Three for a girl
Four for a boy
Five for silver
Six for gold
Seven for a secret never to be told
Three and four are usually understood to show the sex (性别) of a soon-to-be-born child. Five and six mean that the person is likely to soon find wealth. Seven means that a secret will successfully be kept away from others forever. They are all positive (积极乐观的), except for seeing just one bird, which means bad luck. However, there is a way out. By saying hello to the bird, you can get good luck back again.
There is a saying in China that “the singing of a magpie foretells (预言) good luck and happiness, while that of a crow bad luck and sadness.” It means that magpies are signs of good luck, while crows are those of bad luck. In the UK, crows are also seen as a bad sign by many people. In TV shows and films, if you see a group of crows crying, that is to introduce an air of bad luck or death.
34. What does two magpies mean?A.Health. | B.Wealth. | C.Happiness. | D.Sadness. |
A.All numbers of magpies have positive meanings. |
B.Some are about the sex of a soon-to-be-born baby. |
C.Different numbers of magpies have different meanings. |
D.Saying hello to the bird can help you get back good luck. |
A.百灵 | B.乌鸦 | C.白鹭 | D.鸽子 |
A.Zoo | B.History | C.Travel | D.Culture |
Life is like the four seasons.
When I was young, it was the spring of my life. I started going to school and I learned many new things. There were happy days and sad days. Some days the sun shone but some days it didn’t.
When I was twenty, I had a good job. I was strong and happy. Then I married and had a son and a daughter. In those days I didn’t have much time to think or to play. Every day I was busy and worked hard. I started to get some gray hair. The summer of my life passed quickly.
Then the days got shorter. Leaves fell down from the trees. My children were university students and then my daughter became a doctor and my son became a scientist. They were so busy and had no time to see me. My home was much quieter. I started walking more slowly. One day, I stopped working—I retired (退休). I understood this was my autumn, a beautiful time when the trees change color and give us delicious fruits.
But the days kept getting shorter and colder. Then winter comes. I am older and weaker. I know I do not have many days left, but I will still enjoy them to the end.
