Frank looked in, and saw that it had clean gravel(碎石)walks and beautiful flowers.
He called to his mother and said, Mum, come and look at this pretty garden.1 wish I might open the gate, and walk in.”
The gardener(园丁)heard what Frank said, and kindly invited him and his mother to come into the garden.
Frank’s mother thanked the man. Then she said to her son, “Frank, if I take you to walk in this garden, you must take care not to meddle(乱动)with anything in it.”
Frank walked along the tidy gravel walks, and looked at everything, but touched nothing that he saw.
He did not step on any of the borders(草坪边的狭长花坛), and was careful that his clothes should not brush the tops of the flowers so that he might not break them.
The gardener was much pleased(满意的)with Frank, because he was so careful to behave well. He showed him the seeds, and told him the name of many of the flowers and plants.
While Frank was admiring the beauty of a flower, a little boy came to the gate, and finding it locked, he shook it hard. But it would not open. Then he said, “Let me in. Let me in. Will you not let me in this garden?”
“No,” said the gardener, “I will not let you in, Tom. When I let you in yesterday, you meddled with my flowers, and pulled some of my fruit. I do not choose to let a boy into my garden who meddles with the plants.”
Tom looked ashamed, and when he found that the gardener would not let him in, he went slowly away.
Frank saw and felt how much happier a boy may be by not meddling with what does not belong to him.
He and his mother then continued their walk in the garden, and enjoyed the day very much. Before they left, the gardener gave each of them some pretty flowers.

A food chain shows what eats what. It might show that zebras eat grass and then lions eat zebras.
Lions also eat other animals. Zebras eat other kinds of plants. So it takes more than one food chain to show how lions and zebras get their energy.

A food web shows how food chains work together. From it we can see how energy moves from plants to animals.
Plants and animals that live in hot, dry deserts depend on water as well as food. Creosote bushes have small leaves that hold water. Their seeds provide food and water for kangaroo rats. Kangaroo rats don’t need to drink water. They get all the water they need from the plants they eat. Kangaroo rats keep cool by coming out only at night to look for food. Ringtail cats also come out only at night. Ringtail cats hunt and eat kangaroo rats. Coyotes eat both the kangaroo rats and the ringtail cats.
Nothing is wasted in a food wed. Vultures eat dead animals. Vultures are scavengers. Scavengers do not hunt and kill other animals to get food. They eat animals that are already dead. When a ringtail cat or a coyote dies, it makes a meal for the vultures. Scavengers do an important job in keeping the environment clean.
36. Where does the energy that living things need first come from?
A.Animals. | B.Plants. | C.The sun. | D.Plant eaters. |
A.Because they are afraid of coyotes. | B.Because they are shy animals. |
C.Because it is very hot in the daytime. | D.Because they can eat kangaroo rats. |
A.Kangaroo. | B.Vulture. | C.Cat. | D.Zebra. |
A.Lions eat different kinds of animals. | B.Plants are on the top of the food chain. |
C.Scavengers can keep the environment clean. | D.Some animals get water from the plants they eat. |
A.Web of life | B.Things that we eat |
C.Food in the desert | D.The place where food is from |

People could realize the importance of dreams and know that dreams give meaning to life. Every great achievement has been the result of years of dreaming. Teenagers and young people should be encouraged to dream. (2)Older people should also believe that it is never too late to dream and that human mind is never too old to make dreams turn into reality.
Here are some advice on how to realize our beautiful dreams.
Never giving up is the key to make our dreams come true. We may fail from time to time, but we can learn from failure, correct our mistakes and try again until we achieve our goals. Our life is like a long journey which is not all roses. (3)It sometimes has wind and rain. We believe rainbows will appear after storms.
Cooperation is also necessary. Everyone likes a person who is good at cooperating with others. Besides, in our society most problems can’t be solved by one person alone. (4)合作正成为人们解决问题的最重要的方法之一,especially for people living in the developing society.
At the same time, we should learn to examine our abilities because it helps us know our advantages and disadvantages as well as get a full control of ourselves. Then we may be confident enough to face challenges.
Follow the suggestions above, and our dreams are sure to come true.
