I didn’t want to be a bodybuilding champion. I wanted to be the best bodybuilder of all time.
Deep, deep down ask yourself, “Who do you want to be?” Not what, but who. I’m talking about thinking it out for yourself, “What makes you happy?”
You have to think outside the box. That’s what I believe, after all. What’s the point of being on this Earth if all you want to be is to be liked and avoid trouble?
We have so many rules in life about everything. I say break the rules. Don’t break the law, but break the rules.
I remember that after I had finished with my bodybuilding career I wanted to act. I wanted to be a star in films. Everyone had the same thought that I couldn’t be done. They said, “Look at this body, you have this huge monstrous body, you’re overly developed.” They thought I wouldn’t fit into movies. But I didn’t listen to them. Those were their rules. I was completely certain that I could do it.
Then I got my big chance in Conan the Barbarian. That shows you should trust yourself no matter what anyone else thinks.
On that movie, the director said, “If we didn’t have Schwarzenegger, we would have to build one.” Then when I did The Terminator, I said, “I’ll be back…” One of the famous lines in movie history, all because of my crazy voice. It just shows that you should never listen to those who say you can’t do something.
Don’t be afraid to fail. In everything that I have tried, I’ve always been willing to fail. Don’t be afraid of making decisions. You can’t be frightened with the fear of failure or you will never push yourself. You can push because you believe in yourself and your imagination. You know it’s the right thing to do and success will come. Don’t be afraid to fail.
---By Arnold Schwarzenegger

C.modest and old-fashioned | D.stupid and proud |
A.think while standing outside the box instead of inside the box |
B.think about the outside world in an open way |
C.go outside to see the outside world |
D.think in a creative and unusual way |
A.break the rules and laws when necessary |
B.trust themselves and never be afraid of failure |
C.think twice before making important decisions |
D.not push themselves too strongly and hard |
Mr. Dawson was bad-tempered and everyone in town knew it. Kids knew not to go into his yard to pick an apple. Old Dawson, they said, would come after you with his gun.
One Friday, 12-year-old Janet was walking out with her friend Amy. They had to walk by Dawson's house on the way to Amy's house, but as they got close, Janet saw him sitting on his front door and suggested they cross over to the other side of the street. Like most of the children, Janet was afraid of the old man.
Amy said not to worry. Mr. Dawson wouldn't hurt anyone. When they got close enough, Dawson looked up with his usual frown (皱眉), but when he saw it was Amy, he gave a big smile.
Amy smiled back and told him Janet was staying overnight and they were going to listen to music and play games. Mr. Dawson said that sounded fun, and offered them each a fresh picked apple off his tree. They gladly accepted. Mr. Dawson had the best apples in the whole town.
When they left, Janet asked Amy, "Everyone says he isn’t generous. How come he was so nice to us?"
Amy explained that when she first started walking past his house he wasn't very friendly and she was afraid of him, but she pretended(假装) he was wearing an invisible smile and so she always smiled back at him. It took a while, but one day he half-smiled back at her.
After some more time, he started smiling real smiles and then started talking to her. Just a "hello" at first, then more. She said he always offers her an apple now, and is always very kind.
"An invisible smile?" questioned Janet.
"Yes," answered Amy, "my grandma told me that if I pretended I wasn't afraid and pretended he was smiling an invisible(看不见的) smile at me and I smiled back at him, sooner or later he would really smile. Grandma says smiles are contagious(有传染性的)."
If we remember what Amy's grandma said, that everyone wears an invisible smile, we too will find that they will smile back to you. It's so easy to get caught up in everyday life that we forget how simple it can be to bring cheer to ourselves and others. Giving a smile away takes so little effort(努力) and time, Let's make sure that we're not the one that others have to pretend to be wearing an invisible smile.
31. Kids were afraid of Mr. Dawson because _____.A.he was not generous at all | B.he would fire them with a gun |
C.he was wearing an invisible smile | D.he was always very cold |
A.got to like Amy’s smile day by day |
B.didn’t know how to smile until he met Amy |
C.started to accept Amy as a true friend with real feeling |
D.would like to share his apples with Amy |
A.Smile Brings a Big Success | B.An Invisible Smile |
C.A Bad-tempered Man | D.Let’s Smile |
Circles can be found everywhere in the natural world, but with no exact way to measure(测量) them they are very mysterious and might never be completely understood. When you take the distance around a circle and divide it by the distance across a circle, you will always get Pi. While Pi is about 3.14 when rounded, it is endlessly long. With the help of computers, mathematicians(数学家) have been able to work Pi out to over a trillion decimal places(小数点后万亿位). This makes Pi mysterious, even to the most famous mathematicians.
Pi Day is celebrated on March 14, since the way we write this date, 3/14, looks just like Pi when rounded. In 2009, U. S. Congress voted to formally make March 14 Pi Day. Certain parts of the world—places where March 14 is written as 14/3—will instead celebrate Pi Approximation Day which takes place on July 22nd because of the division(除法) result of 22/7.
Pi has appeared in movies, comics, music, and more. “In modern movies, any time the filmmaker wants to create a sense of mystery, the symbol Pi is used,” says Blatner. People also love working to remember the digits(数位) of Pi and competing against others to see who can remember most. The Guinness World Record for remembering the most digits of Pi is held by Lu Chao of China, who successfully remembered Pi to nearly 67,000 decimal places.
Above all, Pi Day is about having fun with the number, according to Blatner. People will celebrate Pi Day by eating pie and throwing pie, and with fun Pi-related games. Princeton, New Jersey holds a series of Pi-related festivities. Events this year include a surprise birthday party for Albert Einstein whose birthday also falls on March 14, and a “Walk a Pi Event” where participants will walk 3.14 miles together. Just like the number itself, the possibilities for Pi Day are truly endless.
34. What makes Pi mysterious?A.Ways to divide a circle | B.Ways to use it when rounded |
C.Being unable to write it as an expression | D.Its endless decimal places |
A.Because it is announce formally | B.Because it was corrected originally |
C.Because the division result is similar to Pi | D.Because that day is easier to remember |
A.To move more viewers | B.To call for viewers’ attention |
C.To make the films more frightening | D.To add something mysterious to the film |
A.Lu Chao is the first Chinese to recite Pi |
B.Many states in the USA celebrate Pi day on July 22nd |
C.There are many different events to celebrate Pi Day in the world |
D.Scientists will try their best to work out the digits of Pi thoroughly |

Telephone, television, radio, telegraph and the Internet all help people communicate with each other. As a result, ideas and news of events spread quickly all over the world. For example, within seconds, people can know the results of an election(选举) in another country. An international football match comes into the homes of everyone with a television set. News of a disaster such as an earthquake or a flood can bring help from distant countries within hours. Help is on the way. Because of modern technology like the satellites(卫星) that travel around the world, information travels fast.
How has this speed of communication changed the world? To many people, the world has become smaller. Of course this does not mean that the world is really smaller in size. It means that the world seems smaller. Two hundred years ago, communication between the continents(大陆) took a long time. All news was carried on ships that took weeks or even months to cross the ocean. In the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, it took six weeks for news from Europe to reach America. This time difference influenced(影响) people’s actions. For example, one war, or fight, in the War of 1812 between England and the United States could have been avoided. A peace agreement had already been signed. Peace was made in England, but the news of peace took six weeks to reach America. During these six weeks, the large and serious Battle of New Orleans was fought. Many people lost their lives after a peace agreement had been signed. In the past, communication took much more time than it does now.
There was a good reason why the world seemed so much larger than it does today.
