In Chinese culture, some numbers are believed to be lucky or unlucky based on the Chinese word that the number sounds similar to.

For example, the word for the number 8 sounds similar to the word for “making a fortune（财富）”. So, people consider it a very lucky number. Some people will even spend a lot of money to have 8s in their phone numbers or vehicle license plate（车牌照）numbers. The opening ceremony of the Beijing Olympics began at 8:08 p. m. on August 8th, 2008.

The number 9 is also a lucky number because of its connection to the emperors（皇帝）of China. There were nine dragons on emperors’ robes（龙袍）and Chinese myth held that the dragon has 9 children. The number 9 also means “long lasting”. That’s why a man always gives a woman 99 or 999 roses.

So what’s a “bad luck” number in China? It might be 4. Many Chinese people see 4 as a “bad luck” number because it sounds similar to the word “death”.

Because of this, many buildings skip the fourth floor, and simply call it the 5^th floor. In Hong Kong, some buildings even skip all floors numbered with 4, such as 4, 14, 24, 34 and all 40 to 49 floors. Some buildings also skip the 13th floor, as this is considered an unlucky number in many Christian countries.

Face it, and you’re frightened. Today is Friday the 13th — the _______ day — so try not to use your car, set yourself on fire or do anything else that might hurt you. Today while I was sitting comfortably and enjoying the warm summer heat in the backyard（后院）of my office building, I couldn’t help thinking of my happy childhood moments spent in the backyard of my father’s office.

At that time, my mother always had to work during the weekends, and then I spent most of my weekends alone with my father. However, sometimes he got some important work to deal with during his day off. Therefore, I had to go with him back to his office and wait for him until he finished his work.

They tasted very sweet and their taste was unforgettable. Now I have grown up into an adult. I understand that the candies tasted better at that time because I had a lot of childhood fun. Now I own a real house and we have a beautiful yard at the back, but I will never forget my happy moments with my so-called tree house.
