Imagine this, somebody hides free books on the subway for you to find and read. Sounds exciting? Well, British actress Emma Watson, 26, is doing it! She is known for acting as Hermione Granger in the Harry Potter movies.
Watson hid 100 copies of a book called Mom & Me & Mom (2013) on London's subway. The book is from US writer Maya Angelou. It tells about the writer's relationship with her mother. Watson wrote of the book.“This book is one I have read before and is one of my favorites. I can't wait to hear your thoughts!” These books were put in different places on the subway. People saw Watson doing the same thing on the New York Subway this month.
With each book, there is a handwritten note by Watson. She asked people to “take special care of the books” if they found them. She also wrote that “when you are finished, please leave it on the subway again for someone else to find”.
Watson's work is part of a movement called Books on the Underground. It calls on people to leave their books on the subway, so other people can enjoy them too.
Hollie Belton, a woman in London, started the movement in 2012. She loves reading on the subway. She noticed that a lot of people shared her habit, so she got the idea. Over the years, Belton has left over 2,000 books of her own. The movement has attracted more and more people.
Watson is a book lover as well. That's why she tried it. Earlier this year, Watson set up her own online book club Our Shared Shelf She reads a book every month with others. Mom & Me & Mom is the club's book for November.

When I was a kid, my dad often worked outside in the winter, removing snow, or perhaps chopping some wood. With his coat thrown aside, he was just wearing a shirt, a cap, and a pair of gloves.
It could be -20°C, “Aren't you cold, Dad?” I'd wondered, “No.” Dad would reply, “I’m not cold—working too hard to be cold.” Many times I wondered whether my father was extremely tough or a little bit foolish.
One time when I was about five or so, I went ice fishing with Dad. It was a bright, clear day—and bitterly cold.
After we'd been out on the ice for a little while, my feet started getting cold.“Daddy, my feet are cold.” I said.
“Yeah, it's cold out here today.” He replied, “Tell you what, just walk around in the snow!”
I was just a little girl at the time but I remember thinking, “How in the world will walking around in the snow make my feet warm? Dad must be out of mind.”
But there's no better way. So I had to make circles in the snow. Then I made squares. Pretty soon I found it so much fun to make patterns in the snow. Gradually, I did feel warm. I know it because I do it, too.
Now, I know from my personal experience how my dad was able to take his coat off and work outside in the winter. I know it because I do, too.
“Aren't you cold?” my husband asked one winter day.“No.” I replied, “I’m not cold—working too hard to be cold.” I hope that my husband will consider me both tough and smart. But I guess quite a bit of the time he thinks I'm foolish.
If Dad could know that, I'm sure he will smile when I take my coat off while I'm working outside in the winter.
No one can resist(抵抗)the force of nature, but don't hold back because human will and wisdom are stronger.
32. The father said “I’m not cold—working too hard to be cold” in Para2 perhaps because________.A.he was willing to work hard for his family and didn't feel cold |
B.he was so tough and strong that he was not afraid of coldness |
C.working with lots of efforts could make himself warm |
D.he wanted to comfort his family, and didn't want them to worry about him |
A.Popular and wise. | B.Crazy and difficult. | C.Simple and effective. | D.Stupid and useless. |
A.The writer didn't understand her father's explanation until that day. |
B.The writer's husband knew her story and thought she was tough and smart. |
C.The writer wrote the passage to remember her father. |
D.When the writer made circles in the snow, she felt warm and thought it interesting. |
Few of us have heard of Nils Bohlin, but whenever we take a car journey his invention makes us safer. Found in almost every modern car, the three-point seat belt reduces our chances of death or injury by at least 50%. While feeling thankful to his engineer from Volvo, you may also wonder how he came up with such a great idea.
Having worked as a plane designer before, Nils knew clearly that the pilots were willing to put on anything to keep them safe in an accident, but to his surprise, most people in the cars just didn’t want to be uncomfortable for even a minute. To improve the safety for people in the cars, he decided to find a perfect system which should be simple, effective and convenient. In the end, he invented the three-point seat belt, which has been considered as one of the greatest inventions in history.
Seat belts prevent people in the cars from serious injury in five ways.
Keep people inside. People who are thrown out from a car are four times more likely to be killed than those who stay inside.
Protect the strongest parts of the body. Seat belts are designed to fix your body at its strongest parts. For an older child and adult, these parts are the hips(臀部)and shoulders.
Spread out the force in an accident Seat belts spread the force of the accident over a wide area of the body. By putting less stress on one area, they can help you avoid serious injury.
Help the body to slow down. A quick speed causes injury. With the help of the seat belts, your body can have more time to slow down in an accident.
Protect your brain and spinal cord(脊柱). These two key parts injuries may be hard to see immediately, but they can cause death. Therefore, it’s of great importance to protect these parts.
It takes only a few seconds to buckle up once you get in the car, but this simple action could save your life.
35. Nils Bohlin invented the three-point seat belt in order to________.A.take a car journey quickly | B.show thanks to the engineer |

C.the body has more time to slow down in an accident thanks to seat belts |
D.head and spinal cord injuries might be easy to see immediately in an accident |
