Making a speech(演讲) at the UN in front of 500 people from around the world isn’t an easy job. And doing it in a foreign language is much _______. When most Chinese students were still _______ their holiday, Wang Yuan, one of the TFBOYS was busy writing the speech and practicing it. He used all the free time to try to _______ it.

The subject of Wang’s speech was about study. It is a subject that _______ of the students of his age in China can talk about _______ even in Chinese. The speech wasn’t the best, but it was _______ enough for him. After that, be went _______ the speech to see if he had made a mistake. He said he learned a lot from this activity, _______ it was meaningful for him. His post on Sina Weibo about the speech was _______ more than 10 million times.     

The activity also changed the singer’s ________ of English learning. “After the speech, I started to pay more attention to my spoken English,” he said. “Just burying(埋藏) myself in paper exercises is far from enough.”

The sun came out and so did we.

As a student, I was very afraid to answer questions in class, and I found that the students around were just like me. At the beginning of each class, when the teacher asked a question, I always lowered my head because I was afraid that the teacher saw me.

One day, in a foreign language class, Mr. Black gave us a lesson. He wanted us to be active in class. So he asked us some questions, but no one answered. “Let me tell you a story first,” he said.

“When I came to the United States to study, the university often invited famous people to make speeches. Before the beginning of every speech, I found an interesting thing. The students around me always took a cardboard (硬纸板) folded (折叠的) in half, wrote their names in bold (加粗地) with the most eye-catching color, and then put the cardboard on the seat. So when the speaker needed the answers from the students, he could see and call a listener’s name directly.”

“I couldn’t understand that. My classmate told me the speakers were all top people, who meant chances. When your answer was to his surprise, it meant he might give you more chances. In fact, I really saw a few students got great chances because of that.” After listening to the story, I understood that the chance will not find you itself. You must show yourself all the time so that you can find a chance on the card.

The COVID-19 pandemic (大流行) has made our lives very different. Some of us have improved our health habits. Others have learned how to cook. And more people have fallen in love with cycling.

Yang Xiaomeng lives 11 km away from her workplace in Beijing. The 26-year-old lady has been cycling to work for the last three months. “I used to take the subway before the COVID-19 outbreak. But now riding a bike seems to be a safer choice.” she said.

Yang has found that cycling is more relaxing and enjoyable than taking the crowded subway. “There’s more fresh air on the road. It’s also a good way to stay fit. I’ll keep cycling as my new habit,” she said.

Many people turned from public transport to cycling during the pandemic. The number of cyclists on Beijing’s bike-only lane(车道) from Huilongguan to Shangdi has gone up by 17.6 percent.

In other cities around the world, biking is also becoming more popular. London has closed large parts of the city to cars so that people can cycle safely. New York, Berlin and Montreal have created new and wider bike lanes for people to cycle. These cities believe that if there are safer and more comfortable places for cycling. More people will ride bikes in the future instead of driving. This will make the cities greener and cleaner, and their people happier and healthier.

In a restaurant, a bug (昆虫) suddenly flew inside and landed on a woman. With fear on her face, she shouted loudly, jumped around with hands shaking to drive the bug away. Her strong reaction panicked (恐慌) everyone in her group.

Finally she got the bug off, but it landed on another woman in the group. Now it was her turn to continue the play.

A waitress rushed to their table. The second woman somehow managed to get the bug on the waitress. The waitress stood firm and looked at the bug on her blouse. She carefully picked up the bug with her fingers and threw it out of a window. People around her were impressed.

Watching the play go on, I started wondering if it is the bug that caused their behavior? If so, then why did the waitress behave differently?

The waitress solved the problem perfectly without any trouble. It was not the bug, but the inability (无能) of those people to deal with the trouble caused by the bug. I realized that I have the same problems around me. It is not the shouting of my boss or my wife that disturbs me, but my inability to deal with the trouble caused by their shouting. It’s not the traffic jams (堵车) on the road, but my inability to deal with the chaos (嘈杂) caused by the traffic jams.

It is not the problem, but our reaction (反应) to the problem in our life.

I had a funny experience last year. After I had left a small village in the south of France. I drove on to the next town. On the way, a young man waved to me.     33     As soon as he had got into the car, I said good morning to him in French and he answered in the same language. Except for a few words,     34     Neither of us spoke during the journey.     35     when the young man suddenly said very slowly. “Do you speak English?” As I soon learnt he was English himself. We laughed happily and I told him I lived in London.     36     “I am a Londoner, too!”

Finally, we gave telephone numbers to each other and made an appointment that after we went back to London, we would meet again.
