Li Qiang was born in a mountain village. At the age of 16, he went to the best senior high school in his county. And to their joy, his father could live in his relative’s house _______ care of him as well as raise pigs to make money there. Having no classes on weekends _______ made him help his father so that his father could get the feed（饲料）for pigs from home.

Over a thousand hectares（公顷）of farmland will be changed to wetland to help make the water clean at Baiyangdian Lake, North China’s largest freshwater wetland.

Baiyangdian Lake, in the Xiong’an New Area of Hebei Province, is made up of 143 small lakes divided by wetlands and covering 366 square kilometers. It is known as the “kidney（肾）” of North China because it improves the environment.

Ge Zhanguo, a villager in Anxin county, is hoping conditions return to those of his childhood when he and his friends played in the water, swam or even caught fish in Baiyangdian.

He recently returned his 5,300 square meters of farmland to the local government to change it to wetlands, according to Hebei Daily.

Among many measures taken to reach the goal, the area launched（实行）a project in July to restore（恢复）two wetlands by changing the area’s farmlands to wetlands. The project is expected to be finished next year.

There are two major rivers whose water runs into Baiyangdian, but a big part of its water was polluted by the factories in upstream areas, making them major sources of pollution. The restored wetlands can make lots of water clean each day and the quality of water coming into Baiyangdian will be greatly improved.

Next year, another 6,000 hectares of farmland will be restored to wetland at Baiyangdian. And many other projects are underway to restore the lake’s environment.

Have you ever seen black smoke out of factories, turning the sky a dirty gray?     51     Cars, trucks, buses pollute the air too. Smoke from fires pollutes the air.

Land pollution, water pollution, and even noise pollution are also big problems. Both factories and common families may thoughtlessly dump（倾倒）rubbish and waste on land or in water. When farm chemicals（化学品）that help crops grow sink into the ground and water, they pollute too.     52    

Ocean life isn't safe from pollution. Ships carrying oil sometimes have accidents that dump their oil into the ocean.

    53     Dirty air, or smog, is hard to breathe and makes people and animals sick. Dirty water makes people and animals sick when they drink it or wash or live in it. It also kills plants. If land takes in too much waste, nothing will grow on it, and it becomes unfit to live on.

    54     Most people find it hard to change the way they live, even if they want to. And governments and big factories find it even harder to change, since the changes are often unpopular or costly（代价高的）.

Even small changes help, however. Reusing things instead of throwing them away helps.     55     So does recycling. And perhaps the future will find people using cleaner forms of energy, such as wind power and solar energy.

Sometimes people's words are not easily understood.

A man learned this lesson. He had been working late collecting     61     and piling（堆）them high on his wagon（马车）.
