It was time to move. White Fang decided to hide. He found a good hiding place near the camp and waited there.

Native Americans called to him, but he did not obey. They came looking for him but did not find him. He waited in his hiding place, shaking, because he was afraid. He believed that if they found him, he would get a beating.

At last, they went away. White Fang was alone. Now he began to be really afraid. He had no mother to care for him. There were no men to throw him food. There was no warm tent to sleep in. There was only the forest, full of strange noises.

Suddenly, the moon went behind a cloud. White Fang was in darkness. He started to run. He did not know where he was going. He only knew that he had to keep moving.

After many hours, he came to where the Native Americans had camped the night before. There was no one there, but White Fang could smell men. He followed where his nose led him. For more than thirty hours, he ran without stopping. He ran along the river bank and through icy streams that flowed into the river. He pushed his way through thick bushes. He became wet, cold, and very tired.

At last, he came to the Native Americans’ new camp. He saw the smoke from their fires. He smelled the cooking meat. He heard them talking.

More than anything, he wanted to go back to the camp where it was warm and there was food. He knew he had been wrong to run away. He was sure ________.

Keeping low to the ground, he moved slowly into the camp. The man who had looked after him and beaten him often, was sitting by the fire. White Fang moved very, very slowly toward him. He expected a bad beating, but the man tore a piece of meat from his own meal and threw it to White Fang. The cub ate it quickly, then lay down in front of the fire and closed his eyes. He was safe and back home.

Knowing that the clock was ticking, she jumped off the moving float and ran to the child. By the time she got to Clarke, his face had turned purple. “I got him!” she shouted to the mother as she caught the boy from her. Tyra gave a good back push three times. Soon, the boy coughed up the candy and began breathing again. Without another word, Tyra handed Clarke back to his mother and ran to her float before it could leave her behind.

It all happened so fast, the mother never had time to thank the teen. “She didn’t need to,” says Tyra. “I knew what she was feeling. I saw her tears. I saw her face.” Tyra’s actions left the mother speechless. “I don’t really have any words,” she says. “The words that you would say is ‘thank you.’ But that doesn’t seem enough.”

A powerful body posture(姿势) may help children to feel more confident in school. These are the findings of a new study by psychologists(心理学家) from Martin Luther University.

Some body poses don’t need further explanation: When a person sits with their arms crossed behind their head, resting his feet on a table, he is probably feeling very self-confident. “Body language is not just about expressing feelings, it can also shape how a person feels,” explains Robert from MLU.

“Power posing is the nonverbal(非语言的) expression. It involves making very confident poses and changes in body posture,” says Robert. Up to now, most studies have focused on the effects(影响) on adults. Robert and partners’ study is the first to examine children. “Children from the age of five are able to know and read the body posture of others,” Robert adds.

The researchers started their experiment with 108 fourth-graders. One group was to perform two open postures for one minute each. The other group posed with their arms crossed in front of them and their heads down. The children then completed a series of psychological tests. The children who had performed an open posture before had better mood and reported higher self-confidence than the children in the other group. The effects were very clear when it came to questions about school. “Here, power posing had the strongest effect on the children’s self-respect,” concludes Robert. “Teachers could try and see whether this method helps their students.” However, Robert says that the results of the new study should not be blown up and that expectations(期望值) about this skill should betempered. The effects could last for a short time. Serious problems must be treated by doctors.

The new study is consistent with earlier findings on power posing. However, more research need to be carried on.
