Many of us now live in gated communities(封闭式社区). Only people who live there can go freely inside, and only their cars can pass through the gates. But are you hoping for a more open and convenient environment? When gates and walls are gone, everyone can enjoy a city with bigger green areas for picnics and more cafes and bookstores to meet your friends.
Turning gated communities into blocks is one way to achieve this, according to the Chinese government. On Feb. 21, China said that gated communities should be open to the public.
Open communities have already become popular in many cities of other countries, like Paris, France, and New York City, US. There, the roads, shops and green areas are for everyone.
Another good change that blocks may bring is better traffic in cities, according to Professor Li Hongchang from Beijing Jiaotong University. There will be more roads open to the public. And more people may choose to walk father than drive cars because they don’t need to take a long way to get around those gated communities.
The Chinese government explains that the opening will be carried out step by step and more detailed(详细的)plans will come out in the future. Also, they have been testing blocks in some areas in Chengdu, Sichuan, and so far it has been working well.

In China, the 12th month of the lunar calendar (阴历) is called Layue. The month is full of interesting festivals and customs.
Laba Festival, which is on the 8th day of Layue, is the first festival in this month. From this day on, people begin to get ready for the Chinese New Year.
On Laba Festival, people eat hot Laba porridge (粥). There are usually eight things in the porridge: rice, red beans, peas, dried lotus seeds, dates, and three different kinds of fruits and nuts. The porridge is not just good for your health, but a blessing for the coming of Chinese New Year.
Laba porridge is not the only tasty food in Layue. Laba garlic (腊八蒜) is popular in the north. People begin to soak (浸泡) garlic in vinegar (醋) from that day on, and eat it with dumplings during the Chinese New Year. While in the south, people like making sausages.
Another major celebration before Spring Festival is Xiaonian. It is usually on the 23rd or 24th day of the last lunar month. Traditionally it is an important day when people offer sacrifices to the Kitchen God who looks after the family.
Don’t forget to clean your home. This is also an important thing to do to prepare for the Chinese New Year. It means sweeping away the dust of the old year and welcoming a fresh start. Now, the last thing for you to do is to wait for the coming Spring Festival.

For a long time, letter writing was the primary way of long-distance communication (交流). However, with the development of science, many new ways such as e-mail and text messages, have made letter writing a less popular activity. Few people would like to spend time writing a letter.
Even though the science gives us many faster ways to communicate, letter writing is still important for many reasons. Writing a letter to someone shows that you really care about him or her, because you spend time and effort (努力) doing something people hardly do these days. Handwriting is also an important skill you shouldn’t lose, because writing by hand practices your mind in a different way. Another reason is that writing a letter makes you think about what you’re writing. Far too often, we hurriedly send texts and e-mails without thinking carefully. With a handwritten letter, you are able to take the words used seriously.
So, how do we keep on letter writing? The best way is to write a letter to someone. It could be a friend or relative who lives miles away, or someone you have lost touch with over time. Of course, you can also learn the correct ways of writing a letter, or just read some famous letters. Whatever you do, please know that letter writing is still meaningful.

Our lives are made up of our habits, the things that we do often and almost without thinking. They are often things that are hard to stop doing. Good habits make us happy and bad habits don’t. For example, we may think eating too much junk food makes us happy but, in the future, we will be sad. Developing good habits will help us love our lives.
To form a good habit, a goal is needed. There are many habits we may want to have, like doing more exercise. Make sure your goal is accurate, for example, to run a race in six months’ time. Start small. Don’t try and do too much immediately. You might give up. Remember that the journey of 1,000 miles begins with one single step! Start with an action so small that you can’t say no. For example, run for just three minutes every day. It seems silly, but the important thing is to repeat the action and not stop! Be patient and don’t expect success immediately.
There are three elements (要素) to form a habit. Use these to help you:
*The signal to do something
Leave your running shoes by the front door. This is the signal to run.
*Doing the thing
Run for three minutes. After a week, increase to five minutes, and so on.
*A reward for doing that thing
After the run, watch your favourite TV show.
