About art
Art is a vast subject, including all kinds of pictures and sculptures. This book introduces 32 works by some of the world’s most famous artists. This is only a small selection, but it reveals(揭示)huge differences in what artists do.
Why make art?
Artists make art for many reasons. Sometimes, they just want to create something beautiful. But hundreds of years ago-when many people couldn’t read-paintings were often designed to illustrate stories.

John James Audubon was born on April 26, 1785 in Haiti. John spent much of his childhood in France where he spent many hours outdoors painting the world around him. In the 1830s he moved to the United States, and found the animals in his new home were the most beautiful in the world. He especially enjoyed watching the birds.
John spent much of his early adulthood trying and failing at many businesses in the United States. Instead of taking care of business, John was usually off exploring in the wilderness.
At first, John spent this time hunting for food and sport, but he became more interested in the birds he met. He began studying them, trying to learn the differences between the species. He often painted the birds he was watching.
In 1819, John didn’t have enough money to pay his bills, and his family went bankrupt. So he spent time improving his painting skills and began to sell his pictures. He discovered that he could earn some money doing something he really enjoyed. John declared that he intended to paint every bird species in North America.
John wanted to have his collection of bird paintings published. He found no one in America who was willing to publish his works, so in 1826, John headed for London. He and his paintings were well-received because it gave people in London an opportunity to see what wildlife in faraway America looked like.
It wasn’t long before he was able to publish his masterpiece, Birds of America. Some people called his work the “Double Elephant Folio” because the pages were over three feet tall and over two feet wide.
The public loved John’s books and he had finally achieved financial success He also enjoyed fame as one of the greatest naturalists and artists of his time. John James Audubon died on January 27, 1851. Even today, over 150 years after his death, his paintings are still praised.

Pablo Picasso is one of the most famous artists in the world. When his paintings are sold, they usually cost millions of dollars. Now an art museum in Canada has used a special kind of x-ray to help them find new secrets in one of Picasso’s famous paintings, La Miséreuse Accroupie, or The Crouching Beggar.
We know some artists paint pictures on top of other pictures. At one point in his life. Picasso did this often, probably as a way to save money. People often call this time Picasso’s “Blue Period”, because he used a lot of blue in his paintings.
People at the Art Gallery of Ontario (AGO) thought that Picasso’s painting The Crouching Beggar was painted on top of another picture, but they did not know exactly what. Using x-rays, they learned that Picasso had painted his picture on top of a landscape painting (风景画).
Picasso turned the landscape painting on its side and used some of the outlines (轮廓) of the old painting when he made his new painting. The people from the AGO worked with scientists at Northwestern University. These scientists used x-rays in a special way to test the painting.
The x-ray images showed more things of the landscape painting. But they also gave another surprise. They showed that at first Picasso had painted this woman with her arm out, holding a piece of bread. But in the final picture, he painted over her arm, so that all you can see is her coat.
Scientists and people who study art are happy about this new way to use x-rays. It is much cheaper than the old way. The machine is also much easier to move around. Some people think that there are many other secrets that can be known by looking at other paintings in this new way.

The medical world is gradually realizing that the quality of the environment in hospitals may play an important role in the process of recovery from illness.
As part of a nationwide effort in Britain to bring art out of the galleries and into public places, some of the country’s most talented artists have been called in to transform older hospitals and to soften the hard edges of modern buildings. Of the 2, 500 National Health Service hospitals in Britain, almost 100 now have collections of art in hallways, waiting areas and treatment rooms.
This idea came from an artist, Peter Senior, who set up his studio at a Manchester hospital in northeastern England during the early 1970s. He felt the artist had lost his place in modern society, and art should be enjoyed by a wider audience.
A typical hospital waiting room might have as many as 500 visitors each week. What better place to hold regular exhibitions of art? Senior held the first exhibition of his own paintings in the out-patients waiting area of the Manchester Royal Hospital in 1975. Believed to be Britain’s first hospital artist, he was soon joined by a team of six young art school graduates.
The effect is striking. Now in hallways and waiting rooms the visitor experiences a full view of fresh colors, playful images and restful courtyards.
The quality of the environment may reduce the need for expensive drugs when a patient is recovering from an illness. A study has shown that patients who had a view onto a garden needed half the number of strong pain killers compared with patients who had no view at all or only a brick wall to look at.
