Vicuna, a small town in the north of Chile, is a great place for watching stars all year round. Although it is near the sea, the cold, wet air from the coast does not bring clouds. Instead, dry winds from the desert keep the clouds away at night. In fact, the sky is so clear in Vicuna that it is possible to see many stars that can be seen only with advanced(先进的)instruments in other parts of the world.
In Vicuna, distant(遥远的)star systems such as Magellanic Clouds can be seen without the help of an instrument. That is why the town was chosen as the home of a number of sky observatories (天文台). One of them, the Mamalluca, is quite different from the typical observatories used by scientists. This observatory was built for tourists who like to look at the stars. During the year, Vicuna’s hotels accommodate thousands of tourists who come from all over the world to see the night sky as they have only seen it in books. The cloudless sky is clearly a moneymaker for the town, which plans to set up even more observatories. It was recently decided that building observatories would go on for another few years.
At one point, however, the town faced a serious problem. As the town grew, more streetlights were added, making it more and more difficult to see the stars at night. The town saved the night sky by building a new system of lights that lit up the streets without influencing the view of the sky.

The next day, more young black people came, and even more came the day after to the restaurant. Then a gang of white youths came in and attacked them. Most of the blacks were beaten up and were black and blue all over. After that the police rushed in, the several people were put in prison---all of them were black, although they had not done anything wrong---just because they were black.
The news spread quickly through the black living areas in the city. A large crowd held a meeting round the restaurant the following day, forcing(迫使) the restaurant to shut. Young men, black and white, made speeches protesting against segregation and pointing out that black people only wanted to live a life in the same way that whites did. They gave out leaflets and soon the movement spread to other cities. Business became so bad at that particular restaurant that the owners were forced to give and served blacks.
Nowadays, all the blacks are served in all restaurants open to the public in America.

Snow forests make up about 30% of the world’s total forest areas. These wonderful woodlands are not as famous as the Amazon or other rain forests, but they are important. To mark the International Day of Forests, we report on why they are so important for Earth’s health and why they are in danger.
Also known as northern or taiga (针叶林) forests, snow forests are found in the far north of the world, in areas that are quite cold and usually have a lot of snowfall. They lie across parts of Canada, China, Finland, Japan, Norway, Russia, Sweden and the US. Snow forests spread for thousands of miles and cover about 17% of the Earth’s total land area.
Snow forests have very cold winters that can last up to six months, but even so, they are home to all kinds of animals. In the US and Canada, as many as 5 billion (十亿) birds from more than 300 species (物种) live in the forests in the breeding (繁殖) season.
Snow forests are facing several challenges (挑战). Trees are being cut down faster and faster for their wood, which can be used for building. Some forests are being cleared to make space for new roads and houses. All these endanger the homes of wildlife.
In more southern snow forest areas, 1% of the land is being cleared of trees each year. Environmental and wildlife groups around the world are working hard to make snow forests protected areas. This means that cutting down trees is stopped or controlled in some areas. When wood is needed, replanting plans and careful forest management help to reduce (减少) the bad influence. Hopefully this means that the forest is managed in a way that it can live.

Bangkok If you’re staying at one of Bangkok’s five-star hotels, you should tip the porter (行李员) 20 to 50 baht (泰国货币单位), depending on how many bags you have. Taxis are now metered in Bangkok. Local custom is to round the fare (车费) up to the nearest five baht. |
Hong Kong If the service is good, add another 10% to the bill, up to HK $100 in an especially nice restaurant. For HK $10 hotel porters should do it at all but the nicest hotels where a new HK $20 bill may be more acceptable. When in a taxi, round up (凑整数) to the nearest dollar. |
Kuala Lumpur If you are at a hotel restaurant, expect a 10% service charge. But at local restaurants, there’s no need to add a tip. At five-star hotels, one or two ringgit (马来西亚货币单位) will content a porter. Like Bangkok, many taxis are now metered so you can just round up to the nearest ringgit. |
Seoul If you’re at a Korean barbecue joint (烧烤处), there’s no need to add anything extra. But a nice Italian restaurant may require a 10% contribution. If you’re at a top-end hotel, so expect to pay 500 —1 000 won per bag. Taxi drivers don’t accept a tip. Keep the change for yourself. |
