Grain Rain(谷雨) is called the 6th solar term(节气), coming from the ancient saying“rain germinate (生出) all grains”. Grain Rain is from April 19th to21st every year. At that time, the sun reaches 30 degrees in longitude(经度). It is the so-called “ Qingming off the snow, Grain Rain off the frost (霜)”. When the Grain Rain is coming, it means that the cold weather has basically ended. The temperature rises faster and it is good for the growth of cereal crops( 谷类农作物).
The term “Grain Rain" is from a folk story. When Cang Jie, an official from the Yellow Emperor period, created writing characters, grain came down from sky like rainfall. So the Yellow Emperor named this day as the “Grain Rain”.
When this day comes, the amount of rainfall increases more than the day of “The Rains”. It is very important for the growth of the crops. The temperature in most of the basin areas (盆地地区) increases quickly. Most of the basin areas in China reach 20oC to 22oC, including the northwest part.

Beginning of winter usually falls on November 7th or 8th. After beginning of winter, most parts of the country can start to expect cold weather. On this day, after a year of hard work, people are happy to have a rest and spend time with family. The northern China celebrates beginning of winter as the “Small Spring Festival”. People usually have dumplings and mutton(羊肉) soup on that day.
Light snow usually falls on November 22nd or 23rd and heavy snow usually falls on December 7th or 8th. When winter solstice comes, it brings the shortest days of the year and the longest nights. Many places around the country can expect the coldest weather yet. People often start counting “nine cold periods” starting from winter solstice. Every cold period has nine days. People believe that after 81 cold days, spring will come.
Greater cold comes after lesser cold. The field is covered with snow. And all Chinese are ready to welcome the Spring Festival after it. Of course, a new round of solar terms will start.

[2]Ashley Fruno of an animal rights group said, “Face masks aren’t going away anytime soon-but when we throw them away, they can harm the environment and the animals who share our planet.” Monkeys have been found biting the straps (带子) of used masks in the hills outside Malaysia’s capital Kuala Lumpur, which may cause them to lose their breath or even die. There is a similar case. In Britain, a seagull’s legs have been found tangled(缠住的) in the straps of a mask for up to a week.

George Leonard, chief scientist from US-based NGO Ocean Conservancy, said, “When those plastics break down in the environment, they will form smaller and smaller particles (颗粒).” Those particles then enter the food chain and influence the whole ecosystems, he added.
[4]Besides, environmentalists suggest that the public deal ③ single-use masks properly and cut the straps to reduce the risk of animals eating them. Oceans Asia also encourages the use of washable masks.
