UNICEF is an international charity that helps children around the world. It was set up in 1946 to help children in Europe and China after World War II. It wanted to make life better for those who were badly influenced.

Now, UNICEF has a number of plans and hopes to achieve for children in every country. For example, they think that all children should be able to have safe drinking water. They also work hard to make sure that children can get medicine if they are ill. In many countries, children, especially girls, do not have the chance to go to school, so UNICEF tries to let them get a good education.

UNICEF is different from many other charities because it works with different governments around the world. Though many governments have their own systems (体系) to improve the lives of their children, UNICEF has so much experience that it can advise governments on how to make their systems better. 【推荐1】On the first day tutoring students from low-income families at an after-school program in New York City, Alyssa Kapasi noticed how many kids were lining up for free sandwiches and fruit in the cafeteria. One teacher explained that many of these students don’t get enough to eat at home, so school lunch or an after-school meal might be the most food they would get all day.

Kapasi, who attends private school, was shocked. What’s more, she decided to help. “I want other kids to understand that if you see a problem, you don’t have to wait to be an adult to fix it,” says Kapasi. She and a group of friends are now putting their programming skills to work to create an app called Food for Thought, which will allow parents, students, and even kind-hearted strangers to donate(捐款) to a lunch account(账户) for a student in need at a nearby school.

About 20 million American kids receive free lunches. Also, they can buy foods with more quality at lower prices; that is to say, those students’ families just pay for part of their food. When they don’t have the money on any given day, the students might accept a free meal, such as a cheese sandwich.

One smart feature of the app is that it is donated by people from different areas. Some are teachers and doctors, and some are bosses in big companies. To receive help, a family will need only a recommendation(推荐) from a school headmaster, and no one else has to know who you are.

“I want to make my platform an application that all users feel no shame in using,” says Kapasi. She hopes to test the app in a school district(地区) this fall.

A.attended private schoolB.saw kids line up for free food
C.finished her school lunchD.learned some programming skills
2. What is Kapasi’s opinion towards the problems?
A.Wait for the adult to solve it.B.Solve it when you grow up.
C.Try to solve it right now.D.Ask a school teacher for help.
3. What help can some poor families get by using the app?
A.They can learn how to solve problems.
B.Their children can get free lunch.
C.They can get some money from the app.
D.Their children can learn some skills.
4. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?
A.The app protects and shows respect for kids who are helped.
B.The app has worked well in all school districts since this fall.
C.People that give money will know who they are helping.
D.People can get a free meal if they know how to use the app.

【推荐2】A teenager’s(青少年的)dream of cleaning up the world’s oceans may soon come true.

Seven years ago, when Mike was a teenager, he was swimming in the ocean. He saw more rubbish in the water than fish. So for a school project, he made a plan to clean up the ocean.

In 2013, Mike formed a group called The Ocean Cleanup. It collected money to put Mike’s water clean-up plan into action. Two years later, Mike’s plan began.

In the ocean, there is a lot of floating rubbish. Mike’s group will clean it up by using a floating plastic tube(漂浮塑料管). The tube will go around the rubbish and trap(收集), waves and ocean currents will push the rubbish to the tube. A ship will pick up the rubbish and take it back to the coast to sort(分类)and recycle it.

There are 1.8 trillion pieces of rubbish in the area. Most of it is plastic, like bottles, bags and packaging. Plastic rubbish is very bad for birds and fish. They eat the rubbish and may become sick. The Ocean Cleanup says it will be able to clean up half of the rubbish in the area within five years. If this first project works well, The Ocean Cleanup hopes to launch as many as 60 more.
