Reasons Why Pets Are Good for Children
For many of us, pets are part of everyday family life. But more than that, pets can actually aid childhood development in many ways. Veterinarian Dr. Katrina Warren says children who keep pets can benefit a lot. Here are some advantages.
1 Children often share their secrets with pets because pets don’t get cross at them and don’t judge. Pets are loyal, kind and they provide a gentle shoulder to cry on. Children love to include their pet in household events and celebrations such as birthdays and weddings.
2 When looking after a pet, children learn how to care for another living being as well as the importance of routine(常规). Depending on the age of the child and the different pet, children can finish some tasks like feeding or walking the dog.
3 Most children may sit in front of TVs or computers, spending their weekends with the technology if they have nothing to do. However, playing safe games with pets or walking the dog keeps kids away from screens and get them outside to play.
4 Visits to the vet(兽医)can help children learn the importance of providing good health care to all living beings. Pets are also the first experience a child may have with birth and death. They can learn how to deal with the illnesses and how to face losses in life.
Pets help children grow as a person. Animals help children learn empathy(同情心)and respect, as well as develop social skills. Children who enjoy reading out loud to their pets may become more confident and improve their reading skill, too.
A. Pets can act as friends.
B. Teach important life lessons.
C. Help children make more friends.
D. Children may join in more activities.
E. Children can learn how to look after others.

Sarah has got special training in working with these dangerous animals. She gives the animals raw(生的)meat every morning. Also, she gives milk to them in the afternoon. Besides, she takes visitors around the zoo and cleans the cages(笼子)with six other workers.
Fariq, a six-year-old tiger, lives in a cage. One day, Sarah went in to clean his cage as usual. All of a sudden, Fariq ran to bite(咬)her leg! Sarah knew her life was in danger, but she didn’t panic(惊慌). She shouted and tried to open the tiger’s mouth. After several minutes, the tiger opened his mouth and Sarah could get out of the cage. Then other workers took her to the hospital quickly. She had to stay there for three weeks.
Now Sarah can walk again, and she really wants to get back to work. “That might seem crazy, but I feel pleased and excited when I’m with animals,” she says. She has never thought about leaving the zoo. For Sarah, working with dangerous animals is the best job in the world.

These words show the friendship between people and animals. Dogs and other pets can give happiness to people. Some people think of their pets as their children. Some people even leave all their money to their pets when they die.
Animals can help people, too. Dogs can be taught to be the “eyes” for a blind person or “ears” for a deaf (聋的) person. Scientists have found that pets help people live longer! They make people happier, too. Because of that, they bring pets into hospitals for “visits”.
Americans hold “Be Kind to Animals Week” in the first week of May. Pet shows are held during the week. If you don’t live in America, you can do this, too. How? First, think about how animals make your life richer. If you have a pet, take more time this week to play with it. Remember to give it delicious food. If you don’t have a pet, be kind to animals around you. For example, if you see a street dog, just leave it alone, or make friends with it. If others around you do bad things to animals, try to stop them.
All in all, we should make friends with animals. As animals’ best friends, we must protect them.

Can you imagine that most of the people have to stay at home for such a long time to prevent the spread of a virus?
At the beginning of 2020, the novel coronavirus(新型冠状病毒) went around China. Here are some questions about the virus.
Q1: Do pets catch or spread it?
Now there is no fact showing that pets such as cats and dogs can catch or spread the virus. However, for your health, you should wash hands at once after touching pets. It’s good for you to wash hands with soap and the running water.
Q2: How does it go around?
Breathing and touching are two main ways. Chances are higher if people do not wash their hands after touching the infected(感染的) patients. It’s possible for them to catch the virus by touching their eyes, nose and mouth. Children and old people are not strong, so they can easily get infected this way.
Q3: How long can it stay?
The activity of the virus will get weak after it stays in the air for two hours. It can live about 48 hours in a dry environment. Research has found the virus can live for five days if the temperature stands at 20°C with humidity(湿度) at 40% to 50%.
Q4: How is the person if he or she catches it?
Many may get a fever, feel tired easily and have a dry cough. Only a few have a runny nose. About half will have difficulty in breathing.

She was so clean and special, because she liked to hold her head high as she walked. My neighbors thought she looked like a queen, so we sometimes called her Queen Ann.
I really wanted to be as confident as Queen Ann one day. And I always dreamed about getting a “friend” of my own just like my brother did and walking with it freely in the wild. However, there was a tumor growing in my leg bone. I could only walk slowly around the barn.
Then September came, and Ann was going to produce a calf in a few days. So I often entered the barn and patted Ann on her big and round side to check her condition.
“MOOOO!”
“BAWWW!”
That sounded funny. I looked over at Ann. She began to lie down. Then she got up. A lot of water came out from under her tail.
Suddenly, I realized something was going to happen.
Soon, I saw something move out of Ann. It was shiny and wet. She lay down again. Moving closer to her, I saw two small hooves inside a thick, almost clear bag.
“MOOOO!” Ann got up again.
“Ann!” I said. “Wait! I’ll get Dad!”
I fell, of course, when I began to run, but I got up and walked as fast as I could.
“Ann’s having her calf!” I said in a hurry. Dad picked me up and we raced into the barn.
Dad caught calf’s legs and let me help him pull. Plop! Out came a calf. We did it!
I named the calf Princess and I started washing her every day. She was special to all of us because she was the daughter of Queen Ann. But she meant more to me. I would remember the day when she was born forever.
Several days later, the doctor took the tumor out of my leg. At first, I was in a wheelchair. But when springtime came, I could run again and I decided to teach Princess to walk just like her mom. I enjoyed the days with her around and she has already become part of my life.
