Wang Yaping, together with Zhai Zhigang and Ye Guangfu, went into space aboard the Shenzhou XIII on October 16th, 2021. The 41-year-old Wang became the first Chinese female astronaut(女航天员)to enter Tiangong space station.
Wang’s space dream started in 2003, when China sent its first astronaut Yang Liwei into space. At that time, Wang was a pilot in the Chinese army. After having safe flights for 1,600 hours over nine years, Wang was a strong candidate(候选人)to become an astronaut in 2010. She pushed herself hard, getting the same training as men. “The space environment won’t change because you are a woman,” she told Xinhua.
The hardest part is the high-G training. Sitting in a spinning(旋转的)machine, Wang would become blind for a while because her brain was short of blood. “There’s a red button(按钮)”, said Wang. “If you can’t stand it, you can press it to stop.” But Wang never used it. “There is no such red button in my heart.” That strong spirit finally made her dream come true in 2013. She joined the team for the Shenzhou X mission(任务).
Wang said that as astronauts, women have their own advantages(优势). “Women may be more patient and can better deal with loneliness. Women’s hearts are also easier to adapt to the weightless environment, making them more suitable for long-term missions.”
Wang Yaping went a long way before becoming the first woman to enter the Tiangong space station. She sets a good example for all women who dream of going to space.

He is only five, but it is a question that I can’t easily answer. I often ask myself, “Cathy, why are you go running?” I don’t know, but something lets me go. So I say to Dave, “Something lets me go.”
The truth is that just before you run, it’s still difficult to explain (解释) to someone why you run. Of course, some people run to lose weight (减肥) or to be healthy, and these are good reasons (理由).
Running is difficult, that’s because you need to persist every day. However, running is also easy to do. It’s cheap, and you can do it whenever you want. There are over two million (百万) people in England running at least once a week. I’m one of those two million runners. I go running not to lose weight or to be healthy. I run five kilometers every morning. After that I feel great, and it’s easy for me to do the other things. I used to have a hard time at school. Things that were easy for some kids were difficult for me. My mind wandered, and I couldn’t pay attention to what the teacher said. In fact, some teachers thought I might never graduate(毕业).
While other kids lived for gym class, I hated it. I didn’t see the point in the games the kids played.
Then one day, I saw something that really changed my life. I was looking at a compass (指南针) and thought, “Why does that little needle (针) always know where north is?” It may seem silly now, but at that time, it made me take a second look at this thing I had seen many times before. I asked the simple question, “Why?”
I started to read about it and in doing so, I found that physics was really interesting to me. I started borrowing books from school and learning the math behind common things of everyday life.
I started catching up with my classmates. Soon, I was beyond them. By the end of high school, I was far ahead of my teachers.
I got a job at an office. In my spare time, I worked on my ideas. I sent these ideas to a university. The university told me that I had come up with something very important.
Since then, my ideas have been used to look at the world differently. Some say that they changed the way we look at the universe.

“What are you worried about? Jack and Robert also failed, but don’t they still get to go fishing.”
“My boy, you can’t think like that,” his dad said.
“There is a story that people tell in our hometown. I will tell it to you now.”
“There were two cats playing on a roof(房顶). One cat fell down the chimney(烟囱)while holding the other cat. When the two cats climbed out of the chimney, one of the cats had soot(烟灰)on his face, while the other cat’s face was clean. “Einstein, no one can be your ‘mirror’. You have to think for yourself. If you just do what everyone else does, you will never learn.”

Last Supper was drawn on the walls of a church. It may be one of the most famous religious(宗教的)pictures in the world. Mons Lisa probably is the world’s most famous portrait. Mona Lisa’s smile is always the topic people talk about. The most important of his own paintings during the early Milan period was The Virgin of the Rocks. He had worked on the painting for a long time, as his custom, he seemed unwilling to finish what he had begun.
Although Leonardo is generally known as a painter, today only about twelve paintings are looked upon as(视作)having been done by him. This is because of his different interests in nature and his endless scientific experiments and designs. Many of his inventions have become important in modern life. His most special invention was the machine gun. By watching the way birds fly, Leonardo tried to find out the secret of flying. Among his sketches(草图)we can see several flying objects. We take them as modern flying machines. In order to make good use of time, he also invented the labor—saving machines.
Leonardo was a strange man. He didn’t eat any meat. He never published his ideas and scientific discoveries. He usually used mirror writing, which looks like writing in a mirror, starting from the right side of the page and moving to the left. In his time, people learn only from written records. Leonardo encouraged people to find out knowledge in nature. He believed that knowledge is also from practice.

C.In paragraph 2 and 4. | D.In paragraph 1 and 4. |
A.He never published his scientific discoveries. |
B.He was not interested in painting from nature. |
C.He had too many experiments and designs to do. |

Wang Yaping is the first female taikonaut (中国宇航员) to work in China’s Tiangong space station as well as the first Chinese woman to perform a spacewalk.
Wang’s dream of becoming the first female astronaut was inspired (鼓舞) by Yang Liwei’s 2003 space flight, which was China’s first manned space mission. “Now China has its first man in space, when will our country have its first woman,” thought Wang.
Born in a small village in Yantai, Shandong Province in 1980, Wang had been an intelligent long-distance runner since primary school, and competed in local sports meetings. In 1997, Wang, a high school student, was encouraged to apply for the pilot training program because she was good at sports and didn’t wear glasses. Given her strong ability to stay calm, Wang passed all tests as well as physical examinations and became part of the seventh batch of female pilots in China. After four years of education and training, Wang finally learned to fly four different types of aircraft before graduation. She got the top level at the end of 2011. However, Liu Yang, instead of Wang, was chosen for the historic mission of becoming China’s first woman in space in June 2012. Wang was disappointed because it was her dream as well. But she told Liu, “We are proud of you and both of our dreams come true when you make it.”
In 2020, a team of Chinese university students translated cosmic rays (宇宙射线) into music. They said the project was inspired by Wang’s live space speech, when they were teenagers. Wang has given a second lecture in the space station, encouraging young people to achieve their space dreams.

Six astronauts on an eight-month tip to Mars will need at least 18,000 kilograms of water for drinking and washing. They’ll also need water to protect themselves from space rays which can pass right through spaceship walls and harm astronauts’ living cells. But a layer of water placed around the ship can stop the harm.
That’s a lot of water. And sending water into space is too expensive. It costs $33,000 to send one cup of water to Mars. The more you take, the more it costs. We have the technology to get to Mars, but the problem is that it’s too expensive.
But Flynn, an engineer at NASA, thinks he has a way of solving the problem. Instead of building a heavy spaceship and packing it full of stuff (物料), why not use the stuff as part of the spaceship?
Imagine a spaceship that blows up like a balloon. Inside, the walls have pockets like a big honeycomb (蜂巢). These hold lots of plastic bags filled with water, dried food and algae. All these make hard walls and great radiation (辐射) protection. And stopping radiation does not influence the food or water itself — it is safe to eat and drink. And what if the same water could be reused again and again? Flynn and his team call their packed-pocket idea Water Walls.
Making oxygen and taking away CO2—the waste gas you breathe out—is another problem in space. “Water Walls will take away CO2 the same way it’s done here on our Earth—with living plants,” Flynn says. Living plants make in CO2 to make their food, and give off oxygen. “Plants are hard to grow in a spacecraft, so we use algae,” he says.
Algae are tiny plants that live in water. The algae will live in bags in the walls too, fed by human waste and sunlight, eating up CO2 and making oxygen for the astronauts to breathe.
Flynn thinks his onboard recycling system has many advantages. He hopes it will help make flying to Mars a reality very soon.
