Even newborns prefer sweeter milk. And kids love drinks with so much sugar that no more sugar can be able to be dissolved in water. So why does sugar tastes so good?
On the one hand, sugar provides our body with calories, which are turned into energy. Children need energy to power their rapid growth. Sugar also helps to store fat, which we can make use of in case we don’t have enough energy. As a result, sugar is the thing our body needs. When our body needs sugar, it sends signals to our brain and we start eating what we are missing.
On the other hand, we love sugar because it is commonly found in the plants we eat. Plants use sunlight to process water and CO2 into a type of sugar called glucose(葡萄糖). That glucose then provides the plant with food and the building materials for cell walls. And plants not only offer sugar but also many important things our body needs, such as vitamins and iron. But our tongues are especially good at tasting sugar but bad at tasting vitamins and iron. That’s to say, we may have developed our love of sugar while trying to make sure we are feeding our body other more useful nutrients(营养).
However, too much sugar can harm our body. The World Health Organization advises us to eat or drink no more than five teaspoons of sugar every day. So we might have to work on our willpower to say no to more than enough sugar.

The United Nations’ Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) said on April 8 that world food prices hit an all-time high in March. Prices for vegetable oils, meats, sugar and dairy products could rise up to 22 percent.
According to the agency, the FAO’s food price index (指数) had already reported an all-time high in February, as the pandemic, poor weather and climate crisis damaged agriculture and threatened food security for millions of people.
The Ukraine crisis (乌克兰危机) has made the situation much worse. Both Russia and Ukraine have vast grain-growing regions. They are among the world’s main breadbaskets. The two countries together accounted for around 30 percent of global wheat exports. The conflict has also caused a rise in the cost of the other daily essentials and fuel.
“It is extremely worrisome,” said Rabah Arezki, former chief economist at the World Bank.
In 2022, there will be 44 million people in 38 countries at the “emergency” phase of food insecurity, just one step away from a declaration of famine. People in South Sudan, Yemen, and the northern parts of Ethiopia and Nigeria are at particular risk. Recent unrest (动荡) across the world highlights the risks. In Sri Lanka, protests have erupted over shortages of gas and other basic goods.
Global food insecurity may make many concerned: Does China have enough food for its population of 1.4 billion?
According to Wei Baigang, chief economist at the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, China relies mainly on domestic grain production and only 2 percent of the nation’s grain is imported. Global price increases have had little impact on China’s food prices. China’s food prices even dropped 1.5 percent year-on-year in March, in sharp contrast to the global food price rise of more than 30 percent.
In 2021, China saw a good grain harvest for the 18th year in a row, with total grain output exceeding (超过) 650 million tons for seven consecutive years.
The harvest ensured the country’s basic self-sufficiency (自给自足) in grain and its absolute grain security.

China is the biggest market for instant noodles. It can be a snack for students, a meal on a train, or just a good choice for hungry workers. More than 46.2 billion instant noodle packets were sold on the Chinese mainland and Hong Kong in 2013, a BBC article reported. But by 2016, those sales had dropped to 38.5 billion packets, according to the World Instant Noodle Association.
One of the reasons for the drop could be the rise of online food delivery services (外卖服务). They can bring you food no matter where you are. They also offer more choices and tastier food. According to a 2016 survey by China Youth Daily, about 70 percent of young people order meals online at least once a week.
This shows that Chinese people now have higher expectations (期望) for the quality of their food, according to Shen Hongbing, a professor from Chongqing Technology and Business University.
Facing this challenge, instant food companies are trying to improve their products. They are making instant noodles with less fat and salt. They are also making new products, including self-heating hotpot and instant rice. Those can adapt (适应) to the tastes of young people.
Will instant noodles disappear one day? We don’t know. But they have surely left a mark on dining history.

In this way, the restaurants can not only save money but attract more younger people. All kinds of the photos of food such as steaks (牛排) and desserts (甜点) attract people to order more.
“It’s about impulse-buying,” said Adi Chitayat, Conceptic’s CEO. “If a person starts looking at pictures of chocolate cake, it means he wants it.” Frame, a restaurant in Tel Aviv with the system, he also said “The e-menu has helped us to make more money.” People often call ahead to order seats with screens, manager Natalie Edry told Reporters.
At one of the e-menu tables, IT worker Gil Uriel and his family are looking at the photos of the dishes. They felt interested and excited to make a decision on the screen. “It’s more visual (直观).” says Uriel, as his children could have their own choices and they order more food when looking at the photos. “We can still choose, we can still argue—but it’s much easier and interesting when we can all see it.”

When you eat out with friends, it can be difficult to decide what to order, for there are often too many choices on the menu, and everything sounds good.
Luckily, a group of writers have recently written some books to help people solve this problem. Here are some of their tips about ordering food:
First, take a quick look at the menu and order what catches your eye first. Spend no more than two to three seconds deciding.
Then, the key to ordering a good meal in a restaurant is to understand what restaurants are for. Ask the waiters what they recommend(推荐)and order something else — they always try to let you order expensive dishes and make money!
After that, take the menu and divide(分成)it into four or five pieces. Order from only one of the pieces, and not look at the other pieces. You will be happier with your meal.
Finally, ask the other customers at the restaurant about what they are having and order the most popular dishes for yourself.

The customers will go to the light to see the menu, and then they have to hand in all mobile phones, watches and other things that can give off light. They then move to the dark world. Waiters will lead them to the dark dining area. Of course, the waiters are all wearing special glasses that can make them see in the dark. Customers cannot see anything including their food or friends. They have to look for their spoons, drinks, and anything else.
Every table may get a “secret dish(菜肴)”. The guests will have one chance to guess what the dish is made of. Everyone who guesses it correctly can win a prize. “It is not easy,” said the manager, “because without seeing it, only 30 per cent of the guests can get the answer.”
