For many Chinese families, rice is an important part of almost every meal. Where does rice come from? Yuan Longping and his team work to grow rice on the farmland (耕地).
China has 22% of the world’s population(人口), but only 7% of its farmland, ________ food was a big problem in China in the past. In the 1960s, there was a terrible famine in China. Millions of people died because they had no food. Yuan taught farming at school at that time and he was really sad to see this. “How can I help them have enough food?” he thought. He decided to work on a kind of hybrid rice (杂交水稻) because it has higher output (产量).
At that time, other scientists didn’t believe hybrid rice had much value (价值). But Yuan and his team worked on it every day. They took very good care of their rice.
At last, in 1973, they grew a new type of hybrid rice. Farmers can grow it in many different kinds of farmland and also in bad weather. It can fight disease, too. Its output is much greater than common kinds of rice. With the new type, about 70,000,000 people could have food every year! In 2004 he won World Food Prize.
Yuan solved the food problem in China. He also helped many countries of the world grow more rice.

Dreams are stories or a series of events that take place in a person’s mind while they are asleep. You dream around four to six times a night, even if you can’t remember them in the morning. Scientists don’t really know for sure for why we do it. One theory is that sleep is a chance for the brain to deal with thoughts and feelings—keeping things it thinks are important in memories and getting rid of others. Another theory says dreams can help you see things from different points of view and could even help you solve problems.
There are two main phases (阶段) of sleep. These are rapid eye movement(REM), when the eyes move quickly in lots of directions behind closed eyelids (眼睑), and non-rapid eye movement. You can dream in either phase, but it’s most likely to be during the REM phase, which happens about 90 minutes after you fall asleep. This is when brain activity increases until your mind is almost as busy as it is when you’re awake. Many scientists think that animals including cats and dogs can dream because they experience REM sleep.
It is a good idea to go to sleep at about the same time each night. It is also important to give yourself time to relax. This could be by reading or listening to relaxing music. Try to stay away from bright lights and screens, such as phones, tablets or TVs. If you find you are worrying about something, have a notepad by the bed. You can write down your worry, close the pad and put the thought out of your mind, then deal with it the next day. You could also write down your dreams when you wake up (if you can remember them).

The Spring Festival is the most important and the biggest traditional festival in China. During the Spring Festival, Chinese people usually do some traditional activities to celebrate their reunion (团圆). But different parts of China have very different customs. Here are three popular traditional activities.
Cleaning
On the days before the New Year, Chinese families clean their houses because Chinese people think cleaning can sweep away bad luck. Dust and dirt are associated with “old” in Chinese culture, so cleaning the house and sweeping the dust represent saying goodbye to the past and welcoming a new year.
Shopping
Chinese people always go shopping and buy new clothes for the Spring Festival. In Chinese people’s mind, this is a new year, so they should buy a lot of new things. Shopping stands for welcoming new things and getting ready for a new year.
Decorations
After the cleaning, people will decorate the house to welcome the Chinese New Year. Most of the decorations are red in color. Red is a typical festival color and it means pleasure and good luck in Chinese culture. The most popular Chinese New Year decorations include couplets (对联), paper cutting, the Gate Gods and red paper lanterns.
1. What do Chinese people usually do during the Spring Festival?2. Why do Chinese families clean their houses before the Spring Festival?
3. Most decorations are red, aren’t they?
4. How many Chinese New Year decorations are mentioned in the last paragraph?
5. What’s the main idea of the passage?
Students go to school for study. Study in a right way, or you will waste time. The following is some helpful advice.
The best time for reading is morning, because in the morning, the air is fresh and the mind is clear. For that reason, we can get good results.
In studying we must be patient. If we have not understood a text well, we must read it again. We should not read the next one until we have learned the first one.
When we are studying, we must put our hearts into the book, or we can get nothing from the book while we are reading.
We must always ask “ whys”. If it is not well understood, write it down and ask our teachers, our parents or friends. In any possible way, we must know it completely and what we’ve learned can be used well and made better.
There is much advice, but the advice talked about above is enough if we can learn it by heart and follow it.
1. What’s the main (主要的) idea of the passage?2. How many pieces of advice on studying are talked about in the passage?
3. Is it important for the students to ask “whys” in our study? Why?

Yuan worked as a teacher at an agriculture(农业) school in An Jiang, Hunan after graduation. Seeing many people die of hunger from 1959 to 1961, he decided to study hybrid rice.
Yuan spent four years looking for a wild rice strain(品牌) that could be crossed(杂交). In 1964, he found it!
Yuan put all his life into creating hybrid rice, which ended hunger for millions of people not only in China, but around the world. Hybrid rice is grown in 57 percent of China’s rice fields. It is also grown in over 40 countries, including India, the US and Brazil.
In 2020, Yuan’s team set a new world record in growing hybrid rice.
Yuan was not only a great scientist but also a talented man. He had many hobbies, such as volleyball, swimming and violin.
Though he has left, we will respect and remember him forever.
1. Why did people in China and around the world feel sad on May 22, 2021?2. Did Yuan work as a teacher at an agriculture school in An Jiang, Hunan?
3. What did Yuan spend four years looking for?
4. How many countries is the hybrid rice grown in?
5. What hobbies did Yuan have?

He came up with an idea for hybridizing rice in the 1960s when China was caught by many natural disasters.
To help China get out of the troubles, he did the research on better rice. In 1973, together with other people, he succeeded in the development of hybrid rice. Because of his effort, China can provide more rice for its people. The hybrid rice also has great meaning to other countries. In 1979, the technology for hybrid rice was introduced to the USA. At present, more than 100 countries in Asia, Africa and America have grown hybrid rice. He was not only careful about science study, but also good at English and violin. He was interested in everything around him, so he was full of energy and always looked like a young man.
Although he was rich and famous, he never paid more attention to money. The true richness lies in a person’s heart, not the appearance. Also, the best things in life are free. We should learn a lot from Yuan Longping’s scientific spirit and his life attitude(态度).

Tim Berners-Lee is not the most famous inventor in the world. However, his invention has changed our lives.
He was born in London, England in 1955. When he was a small boy, Tim was interested in playing with electrical things. He studied science at Oxford University. He made his first computer from an old television at the age of 21.
Tim started working on early computers. At that time, they were much bigger than now. He worked in England then Switzerland. Tim was really interested in two things, computers and how the brain works. How could the brain connect so many facts so quickly? He had to work with people all over the world. They shared information about computers. It was hard to manage all the information. He answered the same questions again and again, and it took much time. It was even difficult for computers in the same office in Switzerland to share information. Tim also forgot things easily. Could a computer work like a brain? Could it “talk” to other computers?
There was an Internet already but it was difficult to use. In 1989, Tim Berners-Lee invented the World Wide Web (WWW) all by himself. This had a special language that helped computers talk to each other on the Internet. When people wanted to share information with others, they used the World Wide Web. The Internet grew quickly after that.
Tim Berners-Lee doesn’t think he did anything special. He says that all of the ideas about the Internet were already there. All he did was to put them together. He says that many other people worked together to make the Internet what it is today.
Most inventors want to become rich. But Tim gave away the World Wide Web for nothing. He now works in America. He helps people share technology and wants the Internet to be free for everyone to use. Maybe he is the most important but least famous inventor in the world today!
