For many Chinese families, rice is an important part of almost every meal. Where does rice come from? Yuan Longping and his team work to grow rice on the farmland (耕地).

China has 22% of the world’s population(人口), but only 7% of its farmland, ________ food was a big problem in China in the past. In the 1960s, there was a terrible famine in China. Millions of people died because they had no food. Yuan taught farming at school at that time and he was really sad to see this. “How can I help them have enough food?” he thought. He decided to work on a kind of hybrid rice (杂交水稻) because it has higher output (产量).

At that time, other scientists didn’t believe hybrid rice had much value (价值). But Yuan and his team worked on it every day. They took very good care of their rice.

At last, in 1973, they grew a new type of hybrid rice. Farmers can grow it in many different kinds of farmland and also in bad weather. It can fight disease, too. Its output is much greater than common kinds of rice. With the new type, about 70,000,000 people could have food every year! In 2004 he won World Food Prize.

Yuan solved the food problem in China. He also helped many countries of the world grow more rice.

Dreams are stories or a series of events that take place in a person’s mind while they are asleep. You dream around four to six times a night, even if you can’t remember them in the morning. Scientists don’t really know for sure for why we do it. One theory is that sleep is a chance for the brain to deal with thoughts and feelings—keeping things it thinks are important in memories and getting rid of others. Another theory says dreams can help you see things from different points of view and could even help you solve problems.

There are two main phases (阶段) of sleep. These are rapid eye movement(REM), when the eyes move quickly in lots of directions behind closed eyelids (眼睑), and non-rapid eye movement. You can dream in either phase, but it’s most likely to be during the REM phase, which happens about 90 minutes after you fall asleep. This is when brain activity increases until your mind is almost as busy as it is when you’re awake. Many scientists think that animals including cats and dogs can dream because they experience REM sleep.

It is a good idea to go to sleep at about the same time each night. It is also important to give yourself time to relax. This could be by reading or listening to relaxing music. Try to stay away from bright lights and screens, such as phones, tablets or TVs. If you find you are worrying about something, have a notepad by the bed. You can write down your worry, close the pad and put the thought out of your mind, then deal with it the next day. You could also write down your dreams when you wake up (if you can remember them).

The Spring Festival is the most important and the biggest traditional festival in China. During the Spring Festival, Chinese people usually do some traditional activities to celebrate their reunion (团圆). But different parts of China have very different customs. Here are three popular traditional activities.

Cleaning

On the days before the New Year, Chinese families clean their houses because Chinese people think cleaning can sweep away bad luck. Dust and dirt are associated with “old” in Chinese culture, so cleaning the house and sweeping the dust represent saying goodbye to the past and welcoming a new year.

Shopping

Chinese people always go shopping and buy new clothes for the Spring Festival. In Chinese people’s mind, this is a new year, so they should buy a lot of new things. Shopping stands for welcoming new things and getting ready for a new year.

Decorations

After the cleaning, people will decorate the house to welcome the Chinese New Year. Most of the decorations are red in color. Students go to school for study. Study in a right way, or you will waste time. The following is some helpful advice.

The best time for reading is morning, because in the morning, the air is fresh and the mind is clear. For that reason, we can get good results.

In studying we must be patient. If we have not understood a text well, we must read it again. We should not read the next one until we have learned the first one.

When we are studying, we must put our hearts into the book, or we can get nothing from the book while we are reading.

We must always ask “ whys”. If it is not well understood, write it down and ask our teachers, our parents or friends. In any possible way, we must know it completely and what we’ve learned can be used well and made better.

There is much advice, but the advice talked about above is enough if we can learn it by heart and follow it.

1. What’s the main (主要的) idea of the passage?
________________
2. How many pieces of advice on studying are talked about in the passage?
________________
3. Is it important for the students to ask “whys” in our study? Why?
