Sticking to a vegan (坚持素食的)diet might sound difficult, especially since many popular dishes have meat in them. Yet in recent years, veganism has become one of the fastest-growing trends(趋势)in the world.
According to HuffPost, more than 3 million people in the United States are vegans. In the UK, about 542,000 people have chosen veganism over the past 10 years.
What is driving this growth in veganism? One reason might be that people want to protect the environment. According to a 2013 study by the UN Food and Agriculture Organization, global meat manufacturing(加工)causes about 18 percent of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions(排放). This is more than all the worlds cars, trains and planes combined.
According to BBC News, one reason is that many of today’s young people believe it’s wrong to kill animals for food. For many people, veganism simply means eating no meat, cheese or eggs, but going animal-free also applies(应用)to fashion and manufacturing. For example, leather is used to make shoes and clothing. Every year more than 1 billion animals, from cows to horses to snakes, are killed to make products from their skins. Now, many brands are looking for other materials.
The sports brand Puma, for example, has made shoes out of pineapple leaves. Tesla, the US car maker, is said to be removing(去除)animal-based leather from its seats. Earlier this year, US singer Lady Gaga created the vegan makeup brand Haus Laboratories. On the brand’s Instagram account, it says: “Cruelty-free(零残忍)and vegan, because we love animals and you.”
So, if you’re interested in protecting animals and saving the environment, you might want to give veganism a try.

In July, 2023, a woman came across a skinny wolf while driving through Hoh Xil. The wolf looked hungry at the time. Out of kindness, the woman got out of the car and offered it some beef jerky. She later posted a video of her experience online. The video attracted many tourists to the area to feed the hungry wolf. Three months later, the wolf again caught public attention with noticeable changes in its size. In a recent video, the wolf can be seen as much larger and fatter. More surprisingly, it has learned to beg (乞讨) for food from tourists!
Feeding wild animals isn’t an unusual practice among tourists in the area. In addition to wild wolves, brown bears have also received their share of handouts from visitors. Last October, a netizen posted a video in which tourists fed several wild brown bears at a scenic spot, saying that these bears often go close to the village for food and that there seemed be a “harmonious” (和谐的) relationship between locals and bears.
However, experts warn that such behavior can have bad effects on these animals, as they may become increasingly dependent on humans. “Reserve has a complex food chain. Unless an animal is endangered, it’s better to stay away from it,” said Dai Qiang, an animal researcher. “And wild animals may carry bacteria (细菌). Getting too close to them can be dangerous.”

There are lots of water birds singing songs. It is just lovely to be on the water. When we come to the river, we try our best to talk quietly so as not to scare (吓到) the birds.
But we often see some nasty (不友善的) things. Sometimes kids use the slingshots (弹弓) to shoot (射击) the birds. They have a good laugh when the birds fall off the trees. When my parents see this, they often row (划) the boat as quickly as possible to the kids. Then my parents tell them they can not hurt the birds. Those birds are very important to nature. If they are not friendly to the birds, one day all the birds will be gone.
We love the place so much that we want to come back every year. So we need to keep it great.

You may have heard the saying “The Yangtze River is China’s mother river.” The main route of the Yangtze is almost 6,400 km long. As the world’s third-longest river, its valley(流域)covers one-fifth of China’s land area. The Yangtze River Economic Zone covers 11 provinces and cities, making up about 40 percent of China’s total population and GDP.
On Dec 26, China’s top legislature(立法机关)passed the Yangtze River Protection Law, which will work on March 1, 2021. It is the first law to protect a waterway in China, CGTN noted.
The “mother river” is in great need of protection because something is wrong with it. For example, the river’s Chinese paddlefish(白鲟)has died out after surviving for 150 million years because of overfishing and water pollution. There’re also desertified(荒漠化的) land and soil pollution near the upstream part of the river in Qinghai province, Xinhua reported.
The Yangtze River Protection Law includes bans(禁止)on activities that could have terrible influence on the river. It also includes heavier punishments for those who don’t follow the law.
According to the law, fishing will be banned in all of the Yangtze’s natural waterways, including its major tributaries(支流)and lakes. Those who are caught fishing will be fined 50,000 to 500,000 yuan.
Sand mining(采沙)will be strictly limited in the river valley. Many companies are mining sand along the river, as sand is a rare resource. However, this has led to lower water levels on the river, which has caused the river’s water quality to become worse.
Companies operating along the river will turn to green development. Companies that produce dangerous chemicals will move out, the law says.

② That has been seen in ancient Chinese houses. Ancient Chinese often built their homes at the foot of the mountain with a river running nearby. The mountains could stop the cold wind from the north and the river provided water for life. Most houses were also built facing south or west so that the rooms were able to get enough sunshine in winter and keep cool in summer.
③ In modern times, humans didn’t follow the laws of nature during fast development. Luckily, it’s never too late to make changes.
④ Green development is the goal of all countries. On April 23, 2016, China signed the Paris Agreement on climate change, giving a strong push to the international efforts against global (全球的) warming.
⑤ Also in China, the government added green development to the country’s work plans. From 1999 to the end of 2018, by carrying out Mother River Protection Operation, China raised 600 million yuan to build over 5,700 green projects. Through international cooperation (合作), over 98.32 million trees were planted across China.
⑥ Denmark is a leading country in wind and solar technologies. This year Denmark has started the “Power-to-X” plan, providing about 1.25 billion kroner (about 1.27 billion yuan) for projects producing hydrogen (氢气).
⑦ Builders across the world are also playing a role in green development. In Chicago, pressed newspaper, recycled glass and plastic are used on buildings. In Bali, the green school is made from bamboo. The school gets its electricity (电) from solar panels (太阳能电池板), water power and a generator that burns farm waste.
⑧ Following the laws of nature is the only way out. A small move in one country may influence the global community as a whole. Let’s join our hands to make the world a better place for now and future.
