In fairy tales, it’s usually the princess that needs protecting. At Google in Silicon Valley, the princess is the one defending the castle. Parisa Tabriz is a 31-year-old with perhaps the most unique job title in engineering — “Google Security Princess”. Her job is to hack into the most popular web browser (浏览器) on the Earth, trying to find weaknesses in the system before the “black hats” do. To defeat Google’s attackers, Tabriz must first think like them.

Tabriz’s role has changed a lot in the eight years since she first started working at Google. Back then, the young graduate from Illinois University was one of 50 security engineers — today there are over 500.

Internet Crime has come a long way in the past decade — from the Nigerian Prince Scam to credit card theft. Tabriz’s biggest concern now is the people who find bugs in Google’s software, and sell the information to governments or criminals. To fight against this, the company has set up a “Vulnerability Rewards Programme”, paying anywhere from $100 to $ 20,000 for reported mistakes.

It’s a world away from Tabriz’s computer-free childhood home in Chicago. The daughter of an Iranian-American doctor father, and Polish-American nurse mother, Tabriz had little contact with computers until she started studying engineering at college. Take a close look at a line-up of Google security staff today, and you’ll find women like Tabriz are few and far between — though in the last few years she has hired more female tech geniuses. Tabriz agrees there’s an obvious gender (性别) disequilibrium in Silicon Valley.

Funnily enough, during training sessions, Tabriz first asks new colleagues to hack into not a computer, but a vending machine (自动售货机). Tabriz’s job is as much about technological know-how as understanding the psychology (心理) of attackers.

1. What can we know about Tabriz?
A.She uses both technology and psychology while working.
B.She was the first female engineer at Google.
C.She learnt much computer knowledge in her childhood.
D.She must think differently from attackers to defeat them.
2. Which is the best title for the passage?
A.Causes of Internet Crime.
B.A Security Engineer’s Daily Life.
C.Google’s New Job.
D.Tabriz, the “Security Princess” at Google.
3. Which of the following has the closest meaning to the underlined word “disequilibrium” in the last but one paragraph?
A.advantageB.imbalanceC.differenceD.competition

【推荐1】How would you like to build a time machine? Paper, sticks, glue and string are all you need. Put them together to build a kite. A kite connects you to the past.

No one knows who flew the first kite. It was probably someone in China or perhaps Indonesia. Indonesian fishermen hung fishhooks on kites and sent them out to sea to catch fish. Starting 2, 000 years ago, Chinese farmers flew kites to welcome the New Year and bring good luck to Earth. In China, people also used kites during wartime. One Chinese story tells how soldiers put noise makers on kites and flew them at night over the enemy camp. The enemies were frightened by the noise and ran away.

About 1, 300 years ago, Chinese travelers took kites to Japan. Soon kites filled the skies there. Kites reached Thailand about 700 years ago. During floods, Thai farmers flew kites over their fields. They hoped the kites would drive away the clouds and stop the rain. Over time, kites flew their way out of Asia. Today, kites are popular all over the world. Kite fans meet at festivals in many parts of the world and have great fun.

Over the years, kites have also helped people understand the natural world. In 1749, for example, cameras hanging from kites took pictures of San Francisco, California after an earthquake. The photos helped people plan what to do.

Kites also helped inventors find out how to make airplanes. The Wright brothers studied how kites flew, which helped them make the first successful airplane.

Since the ancient Chinese first set their kites into the air, people have loved flying kites. Kites give us ways to celebrate, relax and explore. So go fly a kite! Enjoy the feeling of wonder that kite flyers have felt for centuries.

【推荐2】Our cities are busy and full of people. They are not smart enough. As a teenager living in a city, Wu Yuhang, 13, from Dongguan, Guangdong, thinks this is a problem.

“Crossing the street can be dangerous. People cannot keep their eyes off their phones. Drivers cannot see traffic lights if their cars are behind a big truck. I once saw an advertising board fall down in a typhoon (台风), that’s the most terrible. I’m trying to find ‘smart’ ways for these problems.” said Wu.

Over the past few years, Wu invented a signalblocking device (信号屏蔽装置) to put at crossings and escalators (自动扶梯). He also made an assistant system for traffic lights. It sets LED light strips (光带) along the road so that drivers can see traffic lights more easily.

To make his inventions, Wu has learned about programming, building models, making circuit boards (电路板) and other skills. But Wu said the most important thing is to find sore points in people’s lives.

Wu has a bigger plan for his future. He wants to be a chip engineer. “China is still behind the West in computer chips. And chips are important if we want to build smart cities.”
