Imagine an expressway (高速公路) that can circle around Earth more than three and a half times! China is home to the world’s largest expressway network (网), with a total length of 160,000 kilometers at the end of 2020. By 2035, the expressway network will cover all cities and counties, China Daily reported.

The expressway’s blueprint (蓝图) was first announced in 1991, when China was still at the early stage of its market reforms (改革). The speedy growth of the economy called for more convenient transportation. The government planned to build expressways with a length of 35,000 kilometers over 30 years. But the goal was achieved by 2008, 13 years ahead of schedule.

The expressways connect not only China’s biggest cities but also many medium-sized cities. They reach about 70 percent of China’s urban residents (居民). Different climate and terrain (地形) challenges were overcome. This allowed roads to be built in undeveloped areas.

The expressways provide strong support for poverty alleviation (扶贫). Take the Shanghai-Chongqing expressway as an example. At the eastern end of the road, Shanghai is China’s financial center. But the western end used to be one of the country’s poorest areas. It’s the Wuling mountain region. It covers the city of Chongqing, as well as Hubei, Hunan and Guizhou provinces. Because of the expressway, the region has been lifted out of extreme poverty.

文章大意:本文介绍了世界上海拔最高的公路隧道——米拉山隧道及其修建过程。
【推荐2】阅读下面短文,根据短文内容回答问题。

The world’s highest highway tunnel(公路隧道), Mila Mountain Tunnel, was open to traffic on April 26, 2019, at an altitude(海拔)of over 4,750 meters above sea level in Southwest China’s Tibet.

The two-way tunnel is over 5.7 km long, which is a part of the 400-km highway connecting Lhasa with Nyingchi. People started building the tunnel on the 5,018-meter-high Mila Mountain on April 1, 2015. And it was finished on April 24, 2019, helping shorten(缩短)the 18-km distance(距离)over the mountain to 5.7 km.

It wasn’t easy to build the highest tunnel in China. Terribly cold weather and too little oxygen(氧气)were two main difficulties. Besides, carrying everything to the building site(工地)was a great challenge for over 2,000 workers.

However, everyone at the site worked hard to finish building the tunnel on time and more than 10 latest techniques(技巧)were developed while the workers were doing this great project. “We’ve worked here for several years and lived in simple houses,” said Xu Yong, the leader of the project. “Everything was so difficult, but we never feel sorry for ourselves here. It’s a great project.”

The highway is an important way to the eastern part of Tibet. It can help to make more people visit Tibet and bring traffic convenience to local people.
