Three Chinese astronauts from the Shenzhou-13 manned spaceship returned to the Earth after completing their six-month mission. One of their major goals was to prepare the station for future groups of taikonauts(中国航天员)who will complete theassemblyof the space station.
Thanks to a new quick return procedure carried out for the first time, Shenzhou-13’s return trip lasted about nine hours rather than the 24-hour trip for Shenzhou-12, with the return capsule only circling the Earth five times before entering its final return orbit instead of 11 times as in past missions.
The Shenzhou-13 crew was responsible for taking out some of the science instruments to be used for experiments on the station. They also performed two spacewalks, conducted more than 20 different science experiments in addition to delivering two live educational lectures.
Taikonaut Wang Yaping, who gave the first public class from the Tiangong-1 space station, gave two such classes on this trip to Tiangong-2, which were viewed by millions of school children in China.
In addition, the taikonauts were sent questions from 20 schools in 13 U.S. states by American school children. The pre-recorded questions and responses were shared with students, parents and teachers at a “My Questions to Taikonauts” event on April 9 sponsored by the Chinese Embassy in Washington, D.C.
This was the first six-month mission, which will give those on the ground the opportunity to study the effects of the longer duration mission on the taikonauts, especially on the ageing process. The six-month stay will be common for astronauts in the future.
Visiting the Wenchang Space Launch Center on April 15, Chinese President Xi Jinping said that the facility serves China’s new-generation, heavy-lift carrier(运载)rockets and plays a significant role in the country’s deep-space exploration. The Chinese President called for efforts to achieve “world-leading standards” for China’s spacecraft launch facilities.

The real difference between an elite person and an ordinary (普通的) person is that an elite person can manage his or her time well. That’s where their success comes from. What people call self-discipline is in fact self-management.
One example is staying fit. Never underestimate (低估) someone who is in good shape. Anyone who has ever tried to lose weight knows that it’s not easy. It’s even harder to avoid putting weight back on. If someone is in good shape, it shows that he knows the principles (原则) of staying fit and is able to stick to a plan that uses these principles.
If someone is in good shape, it means that this person is good at managing themselves and their time. Whether it is natural or acquired, it is a great skill. It also shows that this person is able to keep persevering (坚定不移的) and can balance long-term goals with short-term goals.
So if someone is in good shape, he or she is more than just healthy.
How do you learn self-management? First of all, set a goal and write down your reasons for wanting to achieve it. Create a list of all the things you need to do to achieve this goal and start to work on them one at a time. With self-discipline, small things in life will no longer trouble you. Only through self-discipline can you truly own your future.

In recent years, China has found many birds die from window collisions. There was a higher number in cities like Guangzhou and Shanghai with large numbers of buildings. “Up to 1 billion birds die each year hitting buildings in the USA, and there might be a similar number in China”, according to China Daily. Most of these dead birds are migratory birds. There has already been diminution in numbers of many of these birds for other reasons, and window collisions add to the loss of their members.
There are two main reasons for window collisions. The first is that during day time birds see the reflection in glass as open space and fly into it, because birds have trouble seeing glass. Also, at night it is due to the street lights and various lighting reflection on the glass, which take their attention away from their path.
“To control glass reflections, we used stickers to decorate windows in 2018,” said Li Binbin, a professor of Environmental Sciences at Duke Kunshan University in Jiangsu Province. This simple effort reduced the collisions at the site to almost zero. Later, the university also tried lowering the use of large windows.
In 2020, in Shenzhen, a city with the world’s second-highest number of buildings over 150 meters tall, bird-shaped stickers are used to break up the reflectivity of the glass in some parks. Meanwhile, an art studio has designed ultra-violet patterns for windows, as ultra-violet light can be seen by birds but not humans, and this particular solution also protects the beauty of buildings.
Keeping bird-safety standard for use in the construction field could bring greater improvements. In October 2019, experts from China and Britain called for more bird-friendly buildings.
Building owners are encouraged to turn off unnecessary lights at night during bird migration periods, in spring and fall. Last year, Lanshan County in China’s Hunan Province, which is located on a migration route, turned off certain street lights so that birds would not get lost at night.
There is a need to raise awareness of the problem because biodiversity protection in cities may require the joint efforts of wildlife workers, city planners, building designers and the general public.
1. Which of the following may cause bird collisions with windows?A.The city buildings are too high. | B.These birds are migratory birds. |
C.Lighted windows hurt birds’ eyes easily. | D.Different light leads birds to the wrong way. |
A.By increasing the number of big windows. | B.By making buildings look brighter at night. |
C.By lowering reflectivity with special designs. | D.By decorating tall buildings more beautifully. |
A.research | B.discussion | C.change | D.drop |
A.Controlling bird collisions helps keep more bird kinds alive. |
B.Window collisions are the main reason for the death of birds. |
C.Birds are easy to lose their direction at the migratory seasons. |
D.Bird-friendly buildings can increase the safety of the buildings. |

Conflicts often start and become worse by our choice of words. Words like “You are so…” or “How could you…?” are not a good choice for polite conversations. Instead, you can start with an “I” and center on your thoughts and feelings about the matter.
②Dr. Thomas Gordon used the “I-message” in the 1960s. “I-message”, also known as I-statement, is a form of sentence that can show your thoughts without making others feel down.
③I-statements enable you to express your opinion without using upsetting language. For example, “I forgot to ask you for your address after you invited me to come,” is better than “You invited me so you should have given me the address.” In this way, you avoid getting into a fight with others or directly pointing out the other person’s mistake. Also, you carefully make them realize what’s going on, showing them how the situation makes you feel. Doing so, you can finally have a meaningful, two-way conversation.
④I-statements are useful in any conversation when you want to tell your side of the story in a more agreeable and reasonable way. Using an I-statement can also lead to necessary changes and even add warmth to your relationships. Strangers you come across will find you pleasant and understanding. You and your friends will continue to build trust in each other.
⑤However, not all I-statements are effective in avoiding conflicts. For example, “I feel like you’re responsible for this,” is as upsetting as “You’re wrong.” Thomas Gordon also said that to successfully use an I-statement, your words should match your tone (语调), body language, and how you feel.
⑥What’s more, an I-statement also has its disadvantages. The more use of “I” can make you appear self-centered, especially in some cultures. Some may even think you’re weak and unable to understand others’ opinions. You have to be careful not to use the I-statement in a way that fail to politely voice your real intention (意图).
⑦All in all, correctly using the I-statement in conversations is a good way to avoid misunderstandings. Whether you are talking with a classmate or a family member, expressing yourself well is the key. Practice using I-statements more and you’ll be amazed how it can make a big difference in your social life.
1. When you use an I-statement in a conversation, you ________.A.seriously point fingers without speaking your opinion loudly |
B.directly get into a fight with the other person |
C.unknowingly change your thoughts about the matter |
D.carefully show yourself to avoid misunderstandings |
A.You should book a table earlier. | B.You never let me do anything fun. |
C.I get nervous when you speak too loudly. | D.I think you always make decisions without me. |
A.I-statements show one can’t fully understand others |
B.I-statements should be avoided so that we won’t appear self-centered |
C.using I-statements can surely make perfect two-way communication |
D.using I-statements correctly brings improvements in one’s relationships |

The 240-kilogram, six-wheeled rover is carried with six scientific instruments, giving it the appearance of a “blue butterfly”. Unlike Perseverance, the American Mars rover, Zhurong needs sunlight to power itself. Now that Zhurong has got down successfully, it is expected to spend the next 90 days mapping the area on Mars, monitoring changes in weather such as temperature and searching for signs of water ice. Zhurong will therefore help build a more complete geological picture of the red planet’s history.
China has successfully landed on the moon three times, and has even brought back lunar rocks to Earth. But landing on Mars is even more difficult. Mars exploration is known for its high risks and difficulties, as well as the uncertainties in the long-distance interstellar(星际)flight. The landing is the most challenging part of it. Around half of Mars exploration missions(任务)failed, and most of them went wrong in the landing process. A Mars landing is often considered as “the seven minutes of terror” because the process is completely autonomous. “The distance is too far away for the spacecraft, so it has to do it all on its own.” said Chen Lan, a scientist in China’s space program. “If something goes wrong, people on earth have no way to help.”
“Mars is the planet in our solar system that we are most likely to live on in the future. That’s why we want to understand it,” Ge, another scientist, said. “The success of Zhurong’s landing will lay the foundation for future Mars missions, including a sample return mission in 2030.”
1. There are many jobs that Zhurong is supposed to do EXCEPT ________.A.mapping the Mars | B.looking for water |
C.studying the weather | D.bringing back lunar rocks to Earth |
A.trusted | B.prepared | C.self-directed | D.man-controlled |
A.history | B.challenge | C.distance | D.process |
A.To show how Zhurong explores Mars. |
B.To lay the foundation for future Mars missions. |
C.To introduce China’s achievement in exploring Mars. |

This is yet another success for Chang’e 4. On January 3, 2019, the probe(探测器) became the first lander to touch down on the far side of the moon. This is the unknown face of the moon that is always looking away from us, so we never see it from down here on the earth. Although it is often seen as the dark side of the moon, the far side actually gets as much sunshine as the near side. For example, when all we can see is a silver of a new moon the far side of the moon is in full sunlight.
Part of Chang’e 4’s mission(使命) is to see how a moon base could be built for humans, including exploring(探索) whether humans could grow crops and other plants there. Chang’e 4 carried a mini-garden with air, water and soil with seeds planted in it. When plants shoot on the earth, their stems(花茎) grow away from the gravity(the force that keeps your feet on the ground) , and so they always shoot upwards. The gravity of the moon is one sixth as strong as the earth’s, so Chang’e 4’s experiment was a test.: would the earth plants know which way was up on the moon? Four days after landing, a tiny cotton shoot showed that they do.
Night has now fallen on the far side of the moon; sunlight will not return until the start of February. As a result the cotton shoots died. Besides the darkness, the plants can’t stand the cold(it can drop to -170℃ on the moon at night). However, the experiment is a success, since it has proved that it is possible for plants to grow in space.

Shortly after the Shenzhou XIII crew (全体组员) returned to Earth in April, the door of Tiangong space station opened again! On June 5, it welcomed another three Chinese astronauts—Chen Dong, Liu Yang and Cai Xuzhe.
This is China’s Shenzhou XIVmission, the ninth manned spaceflight (载人航天飞行) for China, according to China Daily. The astronauts will stay 400 kilometers above the Earth for six months. During the Shenzhou XIII mission on Tiangong, astronauts tested many key technologies. This was to help the proper “construction team (施工队)”, the Shenzhou XIV crew, to complete the bulking of Tiangong.
The crew have a busy schedule (时间表). They will work with ground controllers to connect the Wentian and Mengtian space labs (实验室) with the Tianhe core module (核心舱). Wentian will be launched (发射) in July and Mengtian in October. Astronauts will use a robotic arm to move the labs to their final position. “There will likely be technical uncertainties that the astronauts may have to deal with,” said Pang Zhihao, who worked at the China Academy of Space Technology. Once completed, the station will form a T-shaped structure.
The crew will also enter the two space labs for the first time. They will install equipment (安装仪器) and do scientific experiments. They will also do two to three spacewalks. We can also look forward to fun lectures given by the astronauts!
When their mission is completed around the end of this year, the Tiangong space station will become fully operational. The crew will meet another three astronauts from the Shenzhou XV mission. The six astronauts will work together for five to 10 days inside Tiangong, before the Shenzhou XIV crew fly back to Earth in December.
