Can’t find any place on Earth for your next holiday? Lucky for you, a Californian company is going to offer you a chance to take a vacation in space by building a hotel in orbit(轨道).
The Orbital Assembly Corporation plans to build Voyager Station, a space hotel that includes rooms for tourists, in 2026, and open it in 2027. It will be able to carry up to 400 people.
The space hotel will be shaped like a large wheel, with 24 space pods(around the outside of the 200-meter-wide structure(结构体)). Each pod is 24 meters long and 12 meters wide. The pods will be used for restaurants, bars, gyms, rooms for tourists, laboratories for research and so on.
The company says that some pods will even be private homes that people can buy.
“Finally, going to space will just be another choice for people’s vacation, just like going on a cruise(巡洋舰), or going to Disney World, said Tim Alatorre, senior architect(建筑师)of the space hotel. He said that the space hotel may even include a concert hall and a movie theater.
The company says that the space hotel will have gravity(重力)that is about one-sixth as strong as Earth’s. The low gravity means people can do things like jump higher, lift heavier things and enjoy sports such as basketball in a new way.

![]() Dear Rita, How are you? Last time you asked me about the greatest invention in my eyes.I have also discussed it with my best friends, Anna, Sue and Kris. We have different ideas. Anna thinks it is the high﹣speed railway;Sue,the shared bike;Kris, the online shopping; and I prefer the Internet. The Internet is just like a net,and it connects us with the world. In the past,it was nearly impossible for people to communicate immediately with people in other countries. They had to spend a long time to reach their destinations (目的地), and not everyone could do that. But the Internet has made the impossible possible. Now we can communicate with foreigners online. The Internet also helps us know what is happening around the world, and has made our life and work easier. In recent years, shopping online is very popular. We can just stay at home and buy what we need online. We can also do online office work and distance education.Besides,we can watch movies, listen to music and even play games to relax ourselves on the Internet. So,I think that the Internet is one of the greatest inventions. It has changed our world! Although there are still many problems with the Internet, they will be solved in the near future. As a student we should make good use of the Internet! Yours, Martin |

The earliest recorded face mask-like objects were in the 6th century B. C. Some drawings of people wearing a piece of cloth over their mouths were found in Persian (波斯人的) tombs.
In China, face mask-like objects first appeared during the Yuan Dynasty. The king’s servants (仆人) were asked to wear masks whenever they served food. It was believed that the masks would keep the servants’ breath from affecting (影响) the food’s smell.
In the 14th century, a serious disease called the Black Death spread to Europe. This encouraged the invention (发明) of more protective (防护的) masks. French doctor Charles de Lorme invented the beak (鸟喙) mask, which looked like the head of a bird. It completely covered the wearer’s face. The wearer had to see through the glass in the mask. The medicine in the beak section protected the wearer from diseases.
In 1910, a serious disease spread in northwestern China. The Chinese government asked Wu Liande, a medical scientist, to investigate (调查) it. Wu discovered that the disease could quickly spread through people’s breath. He invented “Wu’s mask” and advised people to wear it. Within four months, the disease was under control. Since it was cheap and easy to make, the mask was used by many people and it was the masks we use today.
Over the past years, some scientists have tried to further improve the face mask. Today, face masks are among the world’s best-selling items. They play an important role in our daily life.

The low-cost device(装置) has already been tested in an American university. Scientists successfully showed an LED touch screen, a total of 20 LED lights and a keyboard, all with a simple touching or pressing motion and without the help of a battery.
“What I predicted is the possibility of not having to charge your smartphone for a whole week, for example, because that energy will be produced by your motion,” said one of the researchers.
The completed device is as thin as a piece of paper. Electrical energy is created when you press it. The device used to power the LED lights is the size of a hand while the device used to power the touch screen is as small as a finger.
The device will become more powerful when folded. Each time you fold it, the energy you create will be doubled. You can start with a large device, but when you fold it once, and again, and again. It's now much smaller, but it has more energy. It may be small enough to put in a specially made heel(脚后跟) of your shoe so it can create power each time your heel knocks the ground. The researchers are also developing technology that would send the power produced from the heel strike to an earphone.

The interest in trips, 100 km above the surface of the Earth, has grown steadily since such a trip began. However, the market has grown much larger this year since the official announcement of the Mars mission. More low-cost spacelines have entered the market and you can now find flights for such a trip for as low as $3,495. It’s very reasonable.
Space tourism (旅游业;观光业) is one of the markets that have developed fast during the last decade, with the opening of the Starbright Hotel on the moon as well as the low orbital hotels that started accepting guests. However, accommodation in space is still expensive for the average household, so the suborbital (亚轨道的) flights with thirty-minute weightlessness during the three-hour flight will for some time be the most popular trip.
However, the spacelines might in the future face fierce competition between space elevators (太空升降舱), like the one that is projected to start construction within two years. Once it is fully functional, it will start to ship cargo to space. But it will accept passengers as soon as possible to get back the large investment. Even if the elevator becomes successful, it will take several years before there are more elevators in the world to get in the competition for space traffic with the spacelines.
Those who are looking for a little bit of adventure and have extra money to spend may want to consider a suborbital flight in space. While a suborbital flight may not be the space mission that you have always dreamed of, it will give you the rare opportunity to see what our planet looks like in a high-altitude flight outside our atmosphere. So before you enjoy a trip by elevator to space, enjoy a suborbital flight first.
1. From Paragraph 1, what will happen in January, 2031?A.A gift card will be taken to Mars. |

B.A suborbital fight may be the space mission that you have dreamed of. |
C.The suborbital flights will be the most popular trip for some time. |
D.Even though the elevator becomes successful, we still wait for a few years to see more elevators come out. |
A.the low orbital hotels have opened since a space trip began |
B.within two years, space elevators will begin to ship cargo and people to space |
C.during the suborbital fights, you will experience 30 minutes’ weightlessness |
D.if you want to meet your curiosity, you may try a suborbital fight |

Some scientists believe that some day submarines will be as many as today’s cars. A famous French driver says, “One day, people will work on the ocean floor as they do on the street!”
If people want to live in the sea, they have to solve a lot of problems, like those of living on the moon such as lack (缺少) of oxygen and weightlessness (失重). Many problems are hard to solve. For example, what will happen to our bodies if we live in the sea for a very long time? Scientists are looking for answers.
Maybe in 50 years people will be able to live in the sea, away from the noisy cities on land. They will find it fun and interesting to live in the sea. And life in the sea is more comfortable. Don’t you think so?

Finn sighed(叹气)and threw his windpack by the front door. He kicked off his shoes and walked into the kitchen.
“Finn, did you hung up your windpack like I asked you?”asked Mom. “I’m tired of tripping over(被绊倒)it all the time.
“I had to walk the whole 3 miles home front school today!” said Finn.
“Why did you have to walk?” Grandpa asked. “What’s wrong with your windpack?”
“The compressor(压缩机)is broken again. Windpacks are so much work.” he complained to Grandpa.” I wish they’d create something that easier to take care of.”
Grandpa smiled.“Finn, you have no idea how easy and clean windpacks are compared(比较)to cars.”
“You never actually had a car, did you Grandpa?” Finn asked. “I thought those were no longer in use before you were old enough to have one of your own. “
Grandpa pulled a small, thin photo card out of his wallet. He typed in a few numbers. “I think I have these organized by year, “he said. “I bought my car around 2025.”
“That’s nearly 50 years ago!” cried Finn.
Grandpa continued pushing buttons(按钮)until he came to a color photo of himself as a young man. He stood proudly next to a huge dark red vehicle(车辆).”This kind of ear was called a truck , “Grandpa told Finn.
“Tell me again what made them run, “Finn said.
“Gas, “answered Grandpa.” The world is a much cleaner place without it, “he added.” In the lust 50 years, pollution has been reduced by 75%.I am certain that you and I will both line longer because of it.”
Finn was quiet for a moment. “Grandpa, I guess windpacks aren’t as much of a pain as I sometimes think they are.”
Grandpa nodded as he put his photo card back. “There’s always room for improvement, “ he said, patting(轻拍)his grandson on the shoulder.

Kidzania’s activities are different in each park, but they’re all like real jobs. In Mexico, kids can fly planes, they can work in shops or sell cars. In some other countries, they can be newspaper reporters or dentists. These activities help kids experience different kinds of jobs.
Kids can learn another important skill at Kidzania: how to save money. Kids are paid for their work with Kidszania’s own money, kidzos. They are taught to open their own accounts(账户) in the park’s bank and they can save these kidzos. They can spend the special money on food and drinks
Kidzania hopes that kids can get ready for their future. I agree with this idea. Trying out different jobs and learning how to save money are good for kids. I think they also need to learn helping others. Kidzania encourages kids to do things for other people.

The theory is that the bees’ navigation systems are damaged by the radiation* from mobile phones. Bees have a built-in system, and this helps them find their way back to their hives*. But recently, thousands of bees have failed to find their way home.
The problem was first noticed by beekeepers in America and is a lot more serious than it at first seems. The important thing about bees is that most of the plants in many countries of the world are pollinated* by them. Without bees, the plants can’t grow. Many beekeepers in America and Europe have reported losing between 50 and 70 percent of their bees. Jim Piper, a London beekeeper, was recently asked how the problem was affecting him. “My business has been destroyed by this,” he complained.
Nobody has proved that this theory is true but it’s a fact that bees are disappearing in very large numbers. And we can do nothing without them. Einstein said that if all our bees disappeared, man would only live for four more years! The situation firstly needs to be tested by the world’s best scientists. If the result proves that the theory is correct, we need to do something about it immediately — before it is too late.
