China’s new ecommerce law came into effect on January 1. According to data from the China ECommerce Research Center, online retail sales of goods and services in China in 2017 added up to 7, 175 billion yuan. This amount made up 19.6 percent of total retail sales. Meanwhile, there are growing concerns in China about consumer protection.
The new law aims to regulate the market and create a safe consumption environment. It requires the sellers on ecommerce platforms and social media to register as ecommerce operators and to pay taxes as well. Those who break the law could be fined up to two million yuan.

Chinese snowboarder Su Yiming, at just 18 years old, is already a household (家喻户晓的) name in China because of his excellent performance at the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics.

This is the story of a boy who grew up to be a great footballer. His name is Pelé (贝利), and he was born in 1940 in a small village, in Brazil.
Pelé’s father was a professional footballer, but a serious injury (重伤) meant that he never made much money from the game. So Pelé’s family was quite poor.
Pelé did lots of jobs to help his parents. But he also played football in the streets with his friends. He decided he wanted to be a footballer like his father. He played for several local teams, then he was given a chance by a big club called Santos when he was 15. He was very talented, so Santos chose him for the team.
Then he was chosen to play for his country, Brazil. In his first two international games, he scored three goals. Soon football fans started calling him “The Black Pearl (珍珠)”.
There was a World Cup coming up in Sweden, and he was picked for the team. Pelé was 18 when he arrived in Sweden in 1958.
