Wang Yaping has become the first Chinese woman astronaut(宇航员) to have worked in space for more than 100 days. On June 11, 2013, Wang Yaping went to space on Shenzhou Ⅹ spaceship with astronauts Nie Haisheng and Zhang Xiaoguang. Wang got the title of “space teacher” then, because she gave science lessons to over 60 million schoolchildren on TV. Wang was sent into China’s space station again on Oct, 16, 2021, on Shenzhou ⅩⅢ spaceship with astronauts Zhai Zhigang and Ye Guangfu. This was Wang’s second trip into space and she completed more tasks, including performing a 6.5-hour-long spacewalk, live science lessons and a work-life balance. On Nov, 7, Wang became the first Chinese woman spacewalker. “I hope all children with space dreams can go to the sea of stars one day,” Wang said.

How do astronauts (航天员) live in space?
Are you interested in the life of astronauts in space? Do you know how they eat, sleep and bathe in space? Next we will tell you some useful information.
How do the astronauts eat in space?
Like people on the Earth, the astronauts also have three meals every day. They keep food in a few special locker trays. They can help stop the food from flying away. The astronauts need to heat (加热) their food before they eat. It takes them about 20 to 30 minutes to finish this step.
How do the astronauts sleep in space?
We all know that things are easy to float (漂浮) in space, and the bodies of the astronauts float easily as well. When they sleep, they tie their bodies to stop themselves from floating away. The astronauts have bedtimes. They usually sleep for 8 hours a day.
How do the astronauts take showers in space?
Because of zero gravity (重力), the astronauts don’t have the chance to take showers in outer space. Water isn’t able to run the way it does on the Earth, so the astronauts have to use other ways to keep themselves clean. For example, they use wet towels and waterless shampoos (免洗洗发水).

In 1997, Wang, a high school student, was encouraged to register (登记) for the pilot recruitment (招募) program by her classmates because she was good at sports and had good eyesight. Thanks to her strong body and ability to stay calm in face of difficulty, Wang passed all the tests and became part of the 7th batch (批) women pilots in China. After four years of education and training, Wang successfully learned to fly four different kinds of aircraft.
In May 2010, Wang became a member of China’s first batch of women astronauts. Three years later, her space dream came true as she was chosen as part of the Shenzhou-X space mission (任务). Wang taught China’s first live physics lesson from space broadcast to more than 60 million primary and middle school students across the country. Many students in China wrote letters to Wang after she returned, telling her their interest in space science. In October 2021, China announced (宣布) the three members for its Shenzhou-M space mission. Wang Yaping becomes the first woman astronaut to work in China’s space station as well as the first Chinese woman to do a spacewalk. She spent six months in the space station. Wang gave a second speech in the space station, encouraging young people to follow their space dreams.

On June 5th, China launched (发射) the three-person Shenzhou XIV, which is the third crew (乘组) for the country’s space station project. The astronauts will work with the ground team to finish the building of the Tiangong Space Station. The crew arrived at Tiangong on Sunday afternoon.
Liu Yang, the first Chinese woman in outer space, said on Saturday in Jiuquan, that she and two other astronauts—Chen Dong and Cai Xuzhe—would be very busy during their stay, and they were going to do their job while Tiangong Space Station was changing its shape. With the help of the ground team, it would change itself nine times.
At the same time, the astronauts would also need to prepare for the arrival of the Shenzhou XV crew and Tianzhou 5 ship near the end of their journey, Liu added.
“In addition, we will use a new hatch (舱门) and a new small robotic arm to do spacewalks. We will perform a large number of scientific experiments and also offer educational activities for pupils online,” she said. “This is also the first time that Chinese astronauts will celebrate our National Day in space.”
In an interview with China Central Television before they flew to the space, Liu said she had talked to her daughter and son about her six-month trip.
“I explained why their mom needed to take part in this great project and why I would be away from home for half a year. I also told them what, they needed to do during this period of time. At first, they were not so happy about my leaving, but they finally said later that they understood,” she said.
