To change their city’s bad traffic, students at the National Polytechnic Institute of Cambodia (NIPC) have designed a new type of manned (载人的) plane. It is from a rather usual furniture—a school chair. The group hope to use it to carry people around capital city and even help fight fires.

With eight propellers (螺旋桨) and a school chair for the pilot’s seat, the plane was developed on the outskirts (郊区) of the capital.

“We wanted to solve some problems for our society by making a taxi plane and…inventing for firefighters,” said Lonh Vannsith, 21, the pilot of the plane. They hoped it could reach the upper floors of a building to bring a hose (软管) where a fire truck could not reach.

It took three years of research and development and cost around $20,000 to build. The plane can carry a 60- kilogram pilot and fly for about 10 minutes for a distance of 1 km. When manned, the plane now only rises to as much as four meter. The team plans to improve the design to allow it to take more weights, as well as fly further and more smoothly at a higher level.

“The project faced delay (延期) because of the international transport. Many parts of the plane had to be ordered from abroad,” said Sarin Sereyvatha, who is NPIC’s head of research and development technology.

“Generally, if we make one plane, the cost is expensive but if we make them to sell on the market, the cost will go down,” said Sarin.

文章大意:本文主要讲述不同的人对像ChatGPT这样的人工智能有不同的看法。

【推荐1】ChatGPT, a smart AI chatbot(聊天机器人)tool, has bee very popular all over the world in the past months. According to a US survey of more than 1, 000 students, over 89 percent of them have used ChatGPT to help with a homework assignment(任务).

Developed by US company OpenAI, ChatGPT is a powerful tool. You can ask it to write stories and emails, create recipes(食谱), translate languages, and answer all kinds of questions.

Some schools in the US, Australia and France have banned(禁止)the use of ChatGPT. In the US, for example, New York City public schools banned students and teachers from using ChatGPT.

The move comes out of worries that the tool could make it easier for students to cheat on assignments. Some also worry that ChatGPT could be used to spread inaccurate(不准确的)information.

Apart from bans, teachers are making changes to their classes to stop the use of ChatGPT. Some college teachers in the US try to include more speaking exams and handwritten papers instead of typed ones.

However, not all schools say “no” to ChatGPT. Some Canadian universities are drafting policies(起草规章制度)on its use, for both students and teachers. They have no plans to completely ban the tool so far.

Bhaskar Vira, pro-vice-chancellor(副校长)for education at the University Cambridge in the UK, said that bans on AI software(人工智能软件)like ChatGPT are wise. “We have to know that AI is a tool people will use,” he told the school newspaper the university. 【推荐2】Kite flying is the sport of sending up into the air, by means of the wind, a light frame covered with paper, plastic or cloth. The frame can be one of many different shapes and is attached to a long string held in the hand or wound on a drum. Kites have a long history of practical application and many different types of kites have been developed to serve various purposes.

The ancient Chinese used bird-kites to carry ropes across rivers and valleys. The present folding kite which will dive excitingly is an improved type of such a kite. With its long flat body and single pair of bird-like wings, it looks just like a large bird in the air. The modern version is usually made of tissue-paper rather than the traditional silk.

Man-lifting kites were developed in ancient times, again by the Chinese, for getting information from walled cities and army camps. In fact, as recently as World War II, German U-boats (德国U型潜艇兵) flew kites from their towers to lift people into the air to watch the land. These kites, which are no longer in existence, were made of light-weight cloth. They were much larger and stronger than the Chinese ones. Their design, however, was simply that of the cutter kite. Smaller in size, this type of kite is still very popular as a toy for children, being easy to make with a diamond-shaped frame, no wings and brown-paper covering.

Box-kites are another type of kites found in toy shops today. The first box-kite, named for its box-like body, was developed in the nineteenth century to test theories of flight and this type of cotton-covered kite greatly led to the success of early planes. These kites are the ancestors of a heavier version of the box-kite, which consists of two main sections, placed side by side. Developed for the peacetime purpose of fishing in strong sea wind, it is the only modern kite described which has practical value. A long-lasting plastic material has to be used for this kite, which carries fishing lines.

Cambridge University’s “doctor of chocolate”

Cambridge University is looking for someone to study the method of keeping chocolates in hot weather. It is a sweet job for a sweet tooth. However, the person needs to be good at maths. Chocolate has a melting (融化) point close to our body temperature. For that reason, chocolate melts easily in hot weather. You might think the advertisement from Cambridge University is funny, but if there is really a “doctor of chocolate”, he or she will help people a lot.

_________

One logo (商标) isn’t too expensive to print because it doesn’t need much ink, but printing a large number of logos could cost a lot. In order to save money and energy, an American design company made small changes to some famous brands, such as Nike, McDonald’s and Starbucks, to cut the cost. The design company remained the main body of these logos, but left an empty space inside. The logos look almost the same, but in this way, the famous brands could save 39 percent of the ink during the printing. Let’s hope other companies will take this advice. The way will save them money and use less energy, too.
