It seems food deliverymen(送货员)are always in a hurry. They wear blue, red or yellow helmets and many of them don’t follow traffic rules. They drive on the wrong side of the road and run red lights. They use mobile phones while driving. Their reckless(鲁莽的)behaviors have caught the public’s attention.
In the first half of 2017, food deliverymen had 76 traffic accidents in Shanghai, according to Shanghai Public Security Bureau. That means every two and a half days, a food deliveryman will die or get hurt on the road.
What makes deliverymen take such risks? The strict rules of the food delivery service companies and the anxious(焦急的)customers are the answer.
Many companies will fine(罚款)a deliveryman up to 2,000 yuan, if he fails to deliver an order on time, reported China Daily. Fines also go to those who get bad reviews from customers.
To solve the serious problem, food delivery service companies need to improve their incentive systems(激励制度), noted CRI Online.
Some cities are also taking action. Shanghai has asked companies to train their deliverymen on traffic rules and safety. Now in Shenzhen, if a deliveryman gets caught breaking traffic rules more than twice, then he will be banned(禁止)from driving food service delivery vehicles(车辆)for a whole year.

Some people say that western festivals are getting more and more popular in China. As a result, Chinese traditional festivals are being neglected(忽视). The two stories below tell you what is going on with people’s favorite festival.
I moved to Shanghai ten years ago, and my hometown is a small village in Hebei Province. When I was a child, the Spring Festival was the biggest event of a year. I loved this festival best because there was a lot of delicious food to eat. Now things are different. We celebrate not only Chinese festivals but also many western festivals like Christmas, April Fool’s Day and so on. The Spring Festival is still my favorite festival, but with so many festivals to celebrate now, it is not as special as it used to be. Wu Qiang, Shanghai |
I am a 15-year-old middle school student in Foshan. If you ask me what my favorite festival is, I think it is Christmas. In the school, most of my classmates get excited about this festival. Usually my friends and I would start to plan the activities two weeks before Christmas Day, and we may hold a party or sing songs together. This year there will be a band show in an outdoor square. We are all looking forward to it. Also we would prepare each other a Christmas card on that day. My parents can’t understand why Christmas is so popular among young people. I don’t know how to say. But my friends and I really have fun in it, and it is out of fashion if we don’t celebrate Christmas. Lily, Foshan |
2. What’s Wu Qiang’s favorite festival?
3. When do Lily and her friends usually start to plan the Christmas activities?
4. Where are they going to hold the band show this year?
5. According to Lily, why is Christmas so popular among young people?

Birthday traditions are different around the world.
In Denmark, people put a flag outside their window to show that somebody is having a birthday. The family put presents around the child’s bed when he is sleeping. When the child wakes up, he is very happy because he can see the presents.
Germans were the first to have birthday parties. Kinderfeste, or birthday parties in Germany, started in 1200. Parents like to wake up their children with a cake and birthday candles. They keep candles lit(点燃)till dinner, and then children make a wish and blow(吹)them out.
At a birthday party in Canada, children look for a coin in the cake. When the children play party games, the child who finds the coin goes first.
Children in Korea celebrate in a different way. They eat seaweed(海带)soup. They think it is healthy. People may wear traditional clothes called hanbok to the birthday party.

Did you see a dentist before? Taking care of your teeth is necessary. And it’s important to have healthy teeth. They can help you speak clearly(清楚地). Want to have healthy teeth? Follow my suggestions.
It’s not enough to brush your teeth only once a day. Brush your teeth at once after each meal. Food debris(残渣) can make your teeth ill slowly. And you should brush all of your teeth, not just the front ones. Spend some time on the teeth along the sides. Take your time while you are brushing. Spend at least three minutes each time when you brush.
Eat fewer candies or other sweet food. Lots of fruit and vegetables can make your teeth strong. Drink more water instead of drinks such as coffee and Coke.
Go to see a dentist and ask him to check your teeth once a year. He can find out your problem before it becomes too serious.
If you follow these suggestions, you’ll have white and healthy teeth.

Learning new words is never easy. Within 24 hours, you may only remember about 20% of the words you memorize(记忆). So what is the best way to memorize new words? The answer is to review! That is to say, you have to see new words again and again.
According to psychologists(心理学家), you need to memorize new words more than seven times to turn them into your long-term memory. A good way to do this is to review new words from time to time. For example, after learning new words, look at them again on the same day. Then, review them a week later, and then ten days after that.
However, it is not enough to repeat new words or to review them in the same way again. It is much better to use new words in different ways. For example, you can use pictures to memorize new words or use new words when you write in your diary. Take your time, and you will keep new words in your mind for a long time.
1. Is it easy or difficult to learn new words?2. What’s the best way to memorize new words?

In China most children often get plenty of homework, because it is believed that the more homework children do, the better they will perform in study. But one primary school in northeast China has done just the opposite for the past 37 years.
That is Shenyang Railway No. 5 Primary School. Although its students don’t have to do homework, they are still getting high standard education. This requires teachers to prepare their lesson plans well, so that students can learn as much as they can during class time.
Also, students from all grades will have a 15-minute mini class in the afternoon (most class in China are 40 minutes), during which they can focus on developing some abilities such as memorizing, listening, or summarizing (总结).
However, not having homework doesn’t mean that students do nothing after school. In fact, they are encouraged to read books at night, or watch the news. They can also find and develop their interests by joining clubs. There are more than 60 clubs at school, including technology, arts, sports, and others.
Wang, a former student of the school, said, “We really learned a lot from that experience. That’s what I found out during my later studies at middle school and high school.”

Friends are important in our lives. Let me share my story with you.
I was born in a small village. My family was very poor, so my parents had to go out for a living. I lived with my grandparents when I was a baby, I was quiet. I had only a few friends. Maggie was my best friend. We became friends when we were 6 years old. She was brave and outgoing. When I was in trouble, she tried her best to help me. Once I was uncomfortable and asked for a leave in P.E. class. After class, one of my classmates lost a watch, I was the only person in the classroom at that time, so she shouted at me and asked me to return the watch to her. All the other classmates shouted at me together, too. But I didn’t take the watch. I was very scared and began to cry. I couldn’t say anything. At this time, Maggie appeared. She said that I could not be the thief because I was always an honest and nice girl. And she ran around the school. Finally, she found the watch in the toilet. The girl who lost the watch said sorry to me. I am so lucky to have such a good friend.

Hello, I’m Kate. I think friendship is very important in our lives.
Let’s imagine you are taking a walk along the road and you happen to see one or two waste bottles lying on the grass beside the road. What would you do?
You may have different choices. Firstly, you can leave the bottles there as they are. It was not you who threw them away. Why should you do something about it? This is quite OK. Secondly, you can pick them up and throw them into a dustbin. By doing this, you have walked a step further to help make our home clean. This action is a better choice. Thirdly, you might want to pick them up and give them to someone who collects waste for a living. If this is your choice, you have walked even further. You’re not only thinking about doing something for the environment, you’re also developing yourself to be a person who would think of others and help them.
As for young kids, they may always have such a question: “When do I grow up?”Yes! When does a child grow up? And how can a kid know he or she has grown up? These are interesting questions. As for us, fifteen-year-old, who are finishing middle school, we’re no longer younger children. We should know whether or not we have grown up. When we start to have a sense of offering a helping hand for a cleaner city and greener world, and when we have a loving heart to think more of others than of ourselves and are ready to help them, we can say that we have grown up.
Remember: If we help others, others will help us. If we do our best for nature, nature will offer its best to us in return!
1. What example does the writer use to support the main idea?2. How many choices are there in Paragraph 2?
3. Who can you give the bottles to in the third choice?
4. What does the writer think of the questions about growing up?
5. What will nature do if we do our best for nature?
