A previous survey of 2,000 British workers found that half of them usually listen to music on the job. Some of their bosses encourage them to do so, while others are against it, believing it hurts work performance. British psychologist (心理家) Becky Spelman did an experiment to find out if background music hurts or improves efficiency.
In the experiment, four office workers were asked to copy two 600-word sets of song lyrics. The group worked on the first set with no music playing and worked on the second set with classical music playing in the background.
It took them an average (平均) time of 20 minutes and 59 seconds to finish the first set. The average time for the second set was 17 minutes and 42 seconds. The difference was three minutes and 17 seconds, or 15 percent.
Classical music can work as a kind of white noise, according to Spelman. White noise is a mixture of sounds with different frequencies (频率). It can help people stay focused (精力集中的).
In fact, as long as the music has a regular beat, it can help us slow our heart rate and stay calm. This makes it easier for us to focus on what we're doing, Spelman said.

【推荐2】Named after poem Tianwen which was written by Chinese poet Qu Yuan hundreds of years ago, Tianwen 1, China’s first Mars probe（探测器）, has given us fantastic pictures of the red planet. Three pictures of Mars taken by Tianwen 1 were made public by the China National Space Administration（CNSA）on March 4.
“These are the first close-up pictures of Mars’ surface taken by China,” said Bao Weimin, a Chinese scientist.
The probe shot high-definition（高分辨率的）pictures while traveling in Mars’ orbit（轨道）, CNSA said. These pictures are quite important for scientists who are doing some research of Mars. Craters（撞击坑）, mountain ridges （山脊）and sand dunes（沙丘）can clearly be seen. CNSA said that the largest crater in the pictures could be about 620 meters wide.
The pictures were taken at different distances from Mars. The two black-and-white pictures were taken by the high-resolution camera on Tianwen 1 when the probe was about 330—350 kilometers above the Martian surface. They said these pictures included more information. As for the colored picture, it was taken by Tianwen 1’s medium-resolution （中分辨率的）camera when the probe was about 5,000 kilometers above the red planet. It shows Mars’ North Pole（北极）.
“It is the shooting modes（模式）that determine if the images are black-and-white or colored,” said Liu Tongjie. The high-resolution camera can take both colored and black-and-white pictures. The black-and-white pictures, are the clearest, carrying the most information for scientific study, said Liu.
Tianwen 1 entered its preset parking orbit above Mars on Feb 24 and is looking for a landing site on the planet. The probe is expected to land on the red planet in May or June.
