A scientist goes to a forest to study monkeys. He or she wants to study their habits. But the first problem is: how to know who’s who?

In the past, scientists had to make marks on each of the animals to tell them apart(分辨). But in the future, they may have a much easier way, thanks to facial recognition technology(面部识别技术).

A research team from China’s Northwest University is using facial recognition technology to recognize thousands of monkeys that live on Qinling Mountain in Shanxi province. It’s quite like human facial recognition and it uses the facial features(特点) of the monkeys to create a database(数据库) that includes every monkey. “When the system is fully developed in the future, we can connect it with cameras set up in the mountains. The system will recognize the monkeys, name them and try to understand their behavior,” said Zhang He, a member of the research team. “The recognition success rate is 94 percent.”

Compared with facial recognition technology for humans, facial recognition technology for monkeys is more complicated (复杂的) because monkeys have faces with hairs. The color of their hair causes them to blend (融入) into their environment. These factors make it harder for computers to do the job. Besides, monkeys do not work with researchers in the same way humans do. It is difficult to take high-quality pictures and videos of them, which are needed to improve the system.

1. To study monkeys in a forest, what is the first problem for the scientist?
A.How to tell them apart.
B.How to make marks on them.
C.How to understand their behavior.
D.How to use facial recognition technology.
2. What can we learn about the facial recognition system for monkeys?
A.It has already been fully developed.
B.It works like human facial recognition.
C.It has a much higher success rate.
D.It takes high-quality pictures of monkeys.
3. What is the main idea of the last paragraph?
A.What facial recognition technology is like.
B.How the facial recognition system works.
C.What difficulties the researchers face.
D.How researchers will solve the problems.

文章大意:本文介绍科学家通过观察壁虎、莲花和鲨鱼等三种动植物的特性开发了一些特殊材料。

【推荐1】People invented planes by looking at the shape of birds. Can you think of other amazing ideas we have got from nature? What materials did scientists develop by looking at animals and plants?

Have you ever seen geckos (壁虎) running up walls? Do you know how they do it? Well, their feet have millions of tiny hairs, which means that they can walk on or stick to almost anything. Scientists have used this idea to develop super-strong and super-sticky glues. We use them to repair planes, and at home they can even stick your TV to the wall!

Lotus (莲属植物) leaves look beautiful when they are on the water. But have you ever noticed how the water just falls off the leaves? Scientists have found that they have a very smooth surface. Water doesn’t stick to this surface, and what’s more amazing, the water cleans the leaf as it moves on the surface. Scientists have now developed materials which can do the same thing. We use them on roofs (屋顶) and snowboards. You can even get paint for the outside of houses which doesn’t get dirty!

Sharks can move very fast in the water because they have special skin. There are hundreds of little “teeth” on the skin. These little “teeth” have lines on them which help the water to flow over the sharks’ bodies more quickly so they move very smoothly and fast. Scientists have used the information they learned from sharkskin to develop the material for swimsuits and the bottom of boats.

1. Which words can describe the material developed by looking at geckos?
A.Super-strong and super-sticky.B.Super-strong and super-fast.
C.Super-sticky and super-fast.D.Super-sticky and super-clean.
2. Which part of the sharks helped scientists develop the material?
A.Their hairs.B.Their skin.C.Their tail.D.Their teeth.
3. What’s the best title for the passage?
A.The Importance of Nature.B.Research on New Materials.
C.Examples of the Best Inventions.D.Ideas from Nature.

How has technology changed our lives for the better? TIME will tell you! The magazine has picked its 100 best inventions of 2021. Here we present you some of the most creative examples.

The Learning Passport

Many schools have closed their doors since the COVID-19 pandemic (新冠疫情) broke out. Home school has been difficult for some students because of slow internet service. To make matters worse, some students don’t even have an internet connection at home. The Learning Passport has a solution. The project offers browser-or-app-based (基于浏览器或手机应用的) classes. These classes do not require a consistent (持续的) internet connection. Instead, students download their lessons when there is internet connection. They can then complete the lessons later, offline.

Blue Jeans Go Green

Jeans are a fashion favorite. Every year more than 4. 5 billion pairs are sold around the world. But the production of jeans is harmful to the environment. To color them, factories use synthetic indigo dye (合成靛青染料). During the process, the chemicals in the dye cause water to become polluted. Bio-technology company Huue has created bacteria (细菌) that can turn natural sugars into indigo dye—without having any negative environmental impacts.

Battery Swapping for EVs

Electric-vehicles(EV) are popular these days. However, they still face a major problem: They can take several hours to charge (充电). This is inconvenient for many drivers. One answer to this problem lies in battery-swapping (电池替换). When an EV pulls into one of these battery-swapping stations, its depleted (耗尽的) battery is removed, and a full charged one replaces it. American company Ample has designed a universal battery. It works with all types of EVs.
